Cassie hiked out to where the bluff was located above the river. It was one of her favorite places, although now she would never see it the same way. As she neared, she saw one of the trackers stationed some distance away from the bluff but where he could still watch it and ensure that no one would get near it. “Kurt,” Cassie said with a nod. “Hey, Cassie,” he said, returning her nod. “Before you go over there, I need to say something to you.” Kurt cleared his throat and continued, “I want to thank you for helping us with this. I know there have been a lot of things said to you and about you over the years. I hate to admit it, but I was one of those people. I’m sorry. You didn’t deserve it. If you hadn’t gone away to college and become the detective you are, you wouldn’t be able to help
