Chapter Two

1900 Words
Kaiya was walking down the street to her best friend Katelyn’s house. Tired of her twin brother and his best friend reminding her of things past. Things she has desperately tried to forget for nearly two years now. At one point, Kaiya, Kellan, and Callum were a trio. They had gone everywhere and done everything together. It was inevitable. Their parents were best friends. They had to be. Callum’s dad was the Alpha and Kaiya’s dad was the Beta and their moms were best friends. They all planned their children around the same time. The kids grew up together. They didn’t have a biological or physical choice to befriend anyone else, knowing Kellan’s destiny to be Callum’s Beta when they come of age. She was always told how Kellan was the intended child to be their father’s “heir” to the position, but she was the miracle-surprise. Why her mother put those two words together was beyond Kaiya’s patience and understanding, but nevertheless, she grew to appreciate the fact that her mother and father were overjoyed to find out they were having a girl as well. One to dress up like a princess and have someone for her brother to play with at home. Though Kaiya did dress and act like the young lady she was expected to be, she did have many interests. Yes, she did cheerleading in school, she was in dance since the age of two, and had a closet full of dresses regardless if she had many occasions to wear them. But she also enjoyed strategy games, playing and watching sports, and really just anything fantasy related. Kaiya was intelligent. She liked being a leader. She was cunning. She could plan out a battle in her head by analyzing everyone’s strengths and weaknesses and using them to her advantage. Something the Alpha always noted she was born with that and that neither his son or his Beta’s son could do quite as well as Kaiya. Kaiya and Callum were told their entire lives how they were destined to be mates because their parents all had a “feeling.” Well, when Callum turned 17 three months ago, he didn’t sense his mate and continued whoring around with other girls in the pack. Kaiya was somewhat disappointed, hoping her best friend growing up would have been her mate. How convenient, someone who she knew and was wildly attracted to for years. At the same time, at least she would have the chance to get to know someone if and when she found her destined mate. It doesn’t change the events of the past, however. At one point she believed she did find her mate. Roman. He was two years older and another Alpha’s son visiting during a treaty alliance between her pack, Diamond Sky, and his, Emerald Mountain. When they met at a party, he claimed she was his mate and frankly she believed him. She didn’t feel the sparks that she thought she would, but maybe they came when she turned of age? They dated for a while and while he never pressured her for his mark, she was glad to start to get to know him early on. One night she went to his packhouse to surprise him, but found him in bed with another girl. Human, by the scent of it. Forgoing all of the drama that ensued, she found herself in bed crying for weeks thinking she would feel the mate betrayal when she came of age two years later. One month after walking in on him, Roman broke into her room with the full intent to rape her. The damage was done by the time Callum crashed through her door. She often thanked the Moon Goddess that, for whatever reason, he came to her rescue. But truly, she was never the same after this. Now all she had to worry about when she turned 17 was enduring whatever betrayal Roman had committed if he really was her mate. Though Callum didn’t recognize her as his mate when he turned 17, she had a strong feeling it wasn’t Roman either. Though whatever betrayal she may have to endure from Roman if he was her mate, she would face it and move on. Last she heard though, he supposedly found his mate but she didn’t know for sure. She refused to dwell on it. She had enough nightmares of him violating her and stealing her virtue. Shaking off the memories, she made it to her friend Katelyn’s house. Katelyn was human and didn’t know of Kaiya’s being a werewolf, but was well aware of Kaiya’s life story. At least, the more human parts of it. Kaiya and Katelyn met in elementary school. Kaiya, Katelyn, and Kellan were all close together in the lines in grade school since their first names were all close together. Rarely did another name come in between them so they always knew they would be close together. Katelyn was the girlfriend Kaiya always wanted and needed. She loved girly things as well as the nerdy things she introduced Kaiya to. She tried to get into the sports and dance that Kaiya was involved with but sucked miserably at it. She would happily sit in the stands or the audience with Kellan and cheer her on from there. All in all, she was the supportive best friend. Kaiya rang the doorbell, after phoning in their usual order of pasta and salad from their favorite Italian restaurant in town. Not only did they deliver, but they had free breadsticks and the delivery boy was hot as hell. Both girls loved to drool over him and while neither had the guts to invite him in, even when they were alone in the house, he was their best kept secret. One day they would invite him inside and it would be glorious. Even if only for a minute. Katelyn answered with a knowing look. Kellan said something stupid and upset Kaiya. She ushered her in and grabbed her some water. “So, what did he do this time?” “He brought it up, then tried to say he didn’t mean to.” Katelyn rolled her eyes. “Heard that one before.” “Yup.” “You wanna get a visit from our naughty little hottie?” “Please, I ordered that s**t walking up your driveway.” Both girls laughed. “Okay good. I’m starving and I want his man meat.” “Ohhhhh-kaaaayy weirdo, that’s just too far.” “We should at least get his name this time.” Fifteen minutes later the doorbell rang and both girls sprinted to answer it. When they opened it, they both took in the young Italian guy’s features as they always did. He was easily six-five, with dark hair, the brightest blue eyes ever, and a perfect smile that constantly made them blush every time he smiled directly at one of them. “Hey ladies, got the usual here. I threw in some extra breadsticks since you ordered it ASAP this time, rather than timed delivery. Figured there was some sort of emergency,” he joked, flashing that smile while looking between the two. Both girls instantly blushed, but Katelyn being the forward, flirty one spoke up. “Oh thank you, yes, it was an emergency. Brother issues. Hers,” pointing to Kaiya, “and we just needed something to help her feel better.” He looked over at Kaiya with concern, “I’m sorry, you want me to beat him up for you?” Kaiya chuckled, “No that’s okay, he’s going to apologize and make it up to me tomorrow probably.” “Well that’s good. I hope this makes you feel better, at least for tonight.” He winked at her and she swore her heart stopped beating. “You know what might make my friend Kaiya here feel even better?” Katelyn looked between her friend who she was about to throw completely under the bus and the boy she thought was cute and would look good with her best friend. “What’s that?” he asked. “Yeah, what would that be?” Kaiya asked, giving her friend a knowing, don’t-you-do-it look. “Maybe if you came and enjoyed some of this food with us,” Katelyn smiled. The delivery boy chuckled, “I’d love to, but I have a few orders to get out right now. Otherwise I would. But if that brother of yours doesn’t make it up to you tomorrow, I could take you somewhere to get your mind off of it?” he smiled down at her. Kaiya suddenly forgot how to speak. She forgot how to breathe. Hell, she just forgot her own name. How could she even say anything other than make the weird sounds that are coming from her mouth in an attempt to answer him? “Uh-I-you-me-uh-wel-umm” “She’d love to! Here’s her phone number.” Katelyn pulled out a piece of paper with Kaiya’s cell on it and it made her wonder how long she had had that in her pocket ready to give him. He took it and made a promise to call her later when he got off of work. Katelyn closed the door and carried the bags of the food to the kitchen, Kaiya in tow. “So I know you’re going to be a little frustrated at my being forward, however-” She was instantly tackled to the floor the nanosecond she placed the food onto the counter. “THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!!” Needless to say, Katelyn was a little shocked at the reaction. This was the third most likely reaction she expected after her friend getting mad and storming off or getting scared and self-conscious about whether or not he would really call her. “You know, this was one of the less-likely scenarios I expected. I figured you’d be pissed at me about that.” “Well, I was at first, but the fact that he so willingly seemed like he ACTUALLY wanted to come in,” she paused, “I don’t know but if he does call…I have a date tomorrow!” Kaiya beamed. “Ugh I won’t have to sit at home and watch my brother and Callum bring girls home and listen to all that moaning and garbage. Oh, I won’t have to listen to their manwhore ways tomorrow. Hopefully.” Katelyn sighed. “Yeah, that sounds awful.” Kaiya instantly felt the pain behind the words. She knew Katelyn has always had a crush on her brother since second grade, and at one point it seemed like Kellan liked her too, but dismissed her because she was human and he knew he wouldn’t have a human mate. Those rarely worked out. So somehow he used that logic to sleep with any and all girls that basically moved. Even trading with Callum at times. It was disgusting. Kaiya secretly hoped both of them would get crabs or something from one of their…conquests. She had yet to see her hopes come true. At least, to her knowledge. The last three birthdays, she blew out her candles wishing for it, sadistic yes, but for her friend’s sake, she wanted her brother to suffer a little for his behavior. Callum could also use an ego diffuser, himself.
