Book One of three.

Mate. She realized it when he broke the kiss and rested his forehead against hers. She felt tears drip onto her forehead. He knew. He knew all this time.

“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry…”

Why is he apologizing? Wait.

“You’ve known this entire time? Why did you lie about not finding your mate?” She pulled away from him.

Cal didn’t speak. Just stared at her. Waiting for her to figure it out. It wouldn’t be long now.

“You’ve even been betraying the bond the past three months-“ she stopped. “Oh my-oh my God.” She paused and looked at him incredulously. “You-you’re rejecting me?”

Bingo.

“Am I that…unappealing to you?”

Silence.

“You just want to w***e around? Is that it?”

Nothing.

“What is it, Cal? You couldn’t bare being mated to your best friend? Need your freedom?”

He continued staring at her.

“If that was your plan, why kiss me? Why did you-today-what? Was it your one day to see what life would be like with me? Was it awful for you? Or maybe I intimidate you, too.”

She wasn’t getting anything out of him. He just watched her with a hardened look on his face.

Tears falling, she lunged forward beating her fists at his chest.

“ANSWER ME!”

He grabbed her wrists, maintaining what little composure he had left, he looked her in the eye. “You know the pain of the betrayal is going to set in from the past three months. Unless you want to feel it, you know what needs to be done.”

She didn’t miss a beat, and this cut deep wounds in his already pained heart. She squared her shoulders and composed herself. She wouldn’t appear weak for this. “I, Kaiya Reign Thompson, reject you, Callum Everette Jackson, as my mate. May our bond be severed without regret.”

He felt it. He felt the pain from the rejection. Honestly, he had been feeling the pains for months and thought of himself already numb to most of it. He took a few breaths prolonging the moment as long as possible.

“Do it,” she gritted out.

“I…”

“NOW!” she screamed not caring who heard at this point.

“I, Callum Everette Jackson, reject you, Kaiya Reign Thompson, as my mate. May this bond be severed.”

Prologue
Hi all, this three-part story begins with this book, that is a little dark. The beginning is obscure, but ties in later on. The second book gets darker, with tragedy, and the third lightens some, but there are a number of mature scenes. *** She was laying in bed for the third straight day. Her brother had come in trying to cheer her up for days with no success. She refused to eat, couldn’t sleep, wouldn’t speak. She couldn’t even take in her surroundings. She couldn’t register the things in front of her or the people around trying to embrace her in her misery. Her heart was broken. Shattered. She couldn’t remember the last time she showered but her brother wouldn’t leave her side even if she smelled like she belonged on a farm. They had been close since their wrestling matches in the womb. They had never fought as kids, whenever some kid was mean to her on the playground or guys talked about her in the locker room, he always threw the first punch, no questions asked. These two were not opposites, but complemented one another very well. Where she was judge and jury, he was executioner. Their third wheel and brother-from-another-mother next door was always there to regulate and stir them into where they needed to be. He was always something of the other third of their shared soul. He came to visit the twins during some of the worst days of her life. He couldn’t take seeing her suffer. When he saw the bastard he would rip his throat from his body. The scum had no reason to live. However, with a treaty alliance freshly inked and signed, he was protected. They would be alliances for the next fifty years. It was beneficial in the beginning, until the moment this girl found herself broken and unable to move on in life. The boys were called down for dinner. This is what they did. Their normal. Eat, shower, change clothes, and straight back to her room. They cuddled her from both sides. She needed them, but just didn’t know it yet. The moment her blonde fairy princess of a best friend came into the room, her twin’s heart raced as it always had, but he couldn’t break away from his sister. “You guys need to leave. I’m here to rescue her.” They didn’t budge. “Get. Out. It’s my turn, you’ve been hogging the misery all week and now I get my weekend. It’s our new custody agreement.” Though she tried light humor, it fell flat. She wasn’t aware of the gravity of the possible situation. With that, the guys got up and went to the bedroom down the hall before the twins’ parents persuaded the boys to go out and get some fresh air. “Now let’s get you into the tub because I refuse to lie with that stank.” She ran a bath in the bathroom and once it was ready she hoisted her friend up (with the help of her mother) into the bathroom. They stripped her, and gently set her in the tub. What makes her more than a best friend is the fact that she actually got into the tub with her to scrub her and continue offering her that physical moral support. This is the moment she finally broke her silence. She cried as hard as she ever had in the arms of her best friend. She wouldn’t understand her problem to its full extent, but as a woman, she could feel the pain on the same gender level. They sat in the water for three hours until her tears were depleted and the truth came out.
