Chapter Five

1399 Words
Kel and Cal had been playing Call of Duty for hours after planning out a training schedule for the next year. Cal had texted his dad that the two of them would go meet him in the morning to go over it. Both Cal and Kel were surprised when Darrin, Cal’s dad, suggested they bring Kai along with them. Neither were surprised, since Darrin always hoped Kai would be Cal’s mate and she showed strong leadership potential since childhood. It was Cal who wondered if his father would suggest Kai inherit her father’s role instead of Kel and though she wouldn’t readily accept it for her brother’s sake, and Kel would lose his s**t, but Cal knew she was destined for better things than being a Beta. Cal always figured Kai would end up in leadership with the Council of the Moon. The Council is made up of creatures of the night like werewolves, lycans, vampires, witches, and sorcerers. The Council oversaw all the covens, packs, and other living communities for the mentioned species. If Kai went to the Council, no doubt would she rise to executive leadership quickly. During a break, Kel looked over at the clock on the wall and shook his head. “It’s two in the morning and I haven’t heard from her. Katelyn said she wasn’t staying over there when I went upstairs earlier, so where the hell is she?” “Wait, she’s not staying there? Then is she staying with that guy?” “She better not.” Just as Cal was about to suggest driving to Katelyn’s to make sure the girls weren’t just lying, the front door opened. They heard giggling and the faint sound of kissing. She was definitely home and had been out with Alex all night. For the first time she was taking advantage of not having an actual curfew or parents at home. Though, not much could be said about the latter since they were due to arrive in five hours. Once Kaiya bid Alex a goodnight filled with slight giggles and pecks on the lips, she shut the door. She sighed and leaned up against the door allowing her body to relax after a night of pure bliss. Never had someone treated her so well. They sat and talked after the movie for hours. Just talked. Until Alex kissed her. Call it chemistry, biology, attraction, whatever you want. It was pure magic to her. She slipped her shoes off and carried them into the house with her humming, not expecting the company awaiting her in the living room. She pulled out her phone and they watched her sit down at the bar, her back facing them while she pulled her phone up to her ear. “Katelyn. I’m sorry for waking you but,” she let out a breath, “oh my gosh.” Some sounds could be heard from their spot, obviously Katelyn asking her question after question. They silently agreed to listen to the one-sided conversation. “Yeah. No!” giggles, “Oh, he was amazing.” Pause. “Yes, lots in common. He plays D&D too. Well, his brother has once or twice but he’s seen him play it.” Pause. “Oh I know, I almost rubbed my hand on it wanting to see how hard it was, I noticed he had a tattoo on it.” Cal and Kel looked at one another wondering what she almost rubbed… “Yeah I asked him if it hurt to get a tattoo on his chest. Apparently that meant it was cool for him to lower his shirt a little to let me take a peek.” She paused giggling at whatever Katelyn was saying. “Some family crest that was like super old. Apparently everyone in their family gets it.” More of Katelyn’s mumbled voice could be heard in the distance. “Oh s**t! It’s after two! I’m so sorry for calling you so late. I’m gonna go to bed. Hopefully whatever nasty diseases that walked into the house tonight after we left are long gone. Oh s**t, I’m sorry, I didn’t think about that.” She paused for a moment again, removing her jacket while Katelyn was talking. “Yeah, he’s gonna call me tomorrow when he gets out.” She reached into her dress fumbling around in her back. “Umm yeah he invited me to some camping thing his family goes to at the end of the school year. He said if you wanna come you could. He thinks you would hit it off with his brother. Girl, he showed me a picture of him. You’re gonna forget about the asshole, I promise.” She slipped straps down her arms and pulled her bra out of her short sleeve, completely unaware of the eyes and ears sitting ten feet away from her. “Okay, I’m gonna go get ready for bed,” her phone beeped and she looked at it while gathering her clothing items she had been dropping while getting undressed in the kitchen. “That’s him right now. I don’t know, I haven't read it yet. Okay, Kay. I love you. I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Goodnight.” She laughed to herself and grabbed a water before turning around running toward the stairs. As her foot almost landed on the first step she jumped so far back and almost dropped everything seeing Kel and Cal sitting in the living room watching her. While Cal had a stoic look on his face, Kel looked just straight annoyed. “So… now you’re spying on me and listening to my private conversations.” She rolled her eyes, “typical of you, Kel. Cal, I get it you’re here with him and you basically live here but really guys? What exactly is it you want?” “We were sitting here long before you came in and started unloading the events of the evening, sister.” “I don’t know how I have not made it abundantly clear that you are not invited to be part of my life. The things I do are not of your concern as much as you think you’re the elder sibling. Two minutes does not make you wiser. It makes me look like the pushover.” As she said this, she didn’t sound angry, she just sounded unemotional. Finished. “You two need to stop. This sibling battle over the last two years has gotten old. You’re nearly adults and will never be able to have this time ever again. For f**k’s sake you never fought before this. Not even over toys when we were little,” Cal interjected. He was simply done with this. Apparently her words to him the previous night stuck. They needed to grow up. Even Kaiya. “Kaiya. Yeah, he f****d up leading on Katelyn all those years. He’s a moron. You need to get over it, and she needs to move on. It never happened and it’s probably for the better.” He turned to Kel. “Dude, stop trying to control her. She has her s**t together better than you and I combined. She made a mistake with one guy who betrayed her trust royally. Anyone would have fallen for it. He played a shitty card that basically spits in the face of the goddess. That’s not her fault. She’s perfectly capable of figuring out what she wants to do with her love life without interference from her brother.” He didn’t dare mention the actual night that changed her, she had heard enough about it from her brother and he had no intention of throwing it in her face the way Kel did whenever he could. Both siblings glared at one another while Cal lectured them. It was a competition for them to see who would give in first. The record for one of their infamous stare downs was 78 minutes. That one was only broken off when there was an emergency and rogues had broken into the territory and were attacking the young ones. However, this current episode was cut short when Kaiya’s phone rang. It was obviously Alex by the look on her face and the sudden change in her mood. With that she walked up the stairs and her door closed hiding her giggles and sweet voice she spoke to the guy in.
