CHAPTER 37 Ruby had never driven so recklessly. Good thing it was still fall. No snow or ice on the mountain pass, although not even deplorable road conditions would keep her away from her best friend’s side. She’d been calling Mace every five or ten minutes, but he wasn’t getting any more updates than she was. That was a good sign, right? If something really bad happened, the doctors would tell Jessi’s brother. Wouldn’t they? Mace had to drive all the way from Spokane, so Ruby had a head start on him. What had Jessi been thinking? Why had she gone back into that building? No, that was a stupid question to ask. Jessi had acted more heroically than Ruby would have ever given her credit for.
