She nearly tripped on the stairs when she saw him standing in the entryway.
“Mace?”
“Ruby.”
Connie was already in her nightgown and curlers. “I’ll let you two talk, but I want you to stay down here with the lights on at all times. You two got that?”
Ruby ignored her. She was too busy staring at Mace. “What are you doing here?” she asked once she found her voice.
“I wanted to talk to you.”
Ruby had to sit down. “Come in.”
She pulled a chair out from the dining room table. He did the same.
“They go to bed really early here,” she lectured. “You should have called or something.”
He smiled at her. Man, she loved that sheepish grin he’d get when he thought she was mad. “I guess I wanted to give you a surprise.”
