CHAPTER 27 Elliot couldn’t believe how nervous he’d been to make this call. It felt good to laugh about a memory that had held him in so much shame for years. He’d never told anyone about it, never mentioned how unprofessionally he’d acted, how far things almost went. The one thing he was grateful for was this early lesson in boundaries. Maybe his early run-in with Ruby spared him from others like it in the future. His patients and their families knew he was there for them. He was supportive and compassionate, but he took pains to remain professional. And he did his best to avoid finding himself in dark offices with young women as pretty and smart and charming as Ruby. Her giggle in his ear was musical. When was the last time he’d laughed like this? “So you’re not mad?” he asked again
