The chaotic footsteps quickly shattered the tranquil atmosphere in the room. “Bang” went the dining-room door as it was kicked open. And the one performing this action was... a young man.
The commotion startled me as a group of soldiers stormed into the room surrounding us. They were Special Forces; I realized. And they were aiming their guns at... my family.
“It seems Beta John is having quite a feast, isn’t he?” the young man spoke in a chilling tone. He strode in, each step deliberate and icy, like a deity.
This person... I recognized him. He was Loid, the Alpha General, known as one of the strongest in the Crescent Moon pack.
From childhood to now, I always kept my distance, observing him from afar, too afraid to get close. He was known as the god of war, the god of death. Wherever he went, he brought destruction, instilling fear in all.
But never did I expect that one day he would appear before me like this.
He wore a military uniform, with a coat adorned with brass buttons. Across his shoulders was a finely decorated sash, displaying prominent badges and medals on his chest.
His face was impassive, devoid of emotion, his features chiseled like a statue, akin to... an angel.
As I was still in awe, my father suddenly slammed his hand on the table and shouted, “Loid, you have some nerve bringing chaos here. Do you realize that Prince Damian is present?”
I turned to look at my father, seeing his face flushed with anger. Surely, Loid wouldn’t come here without a rational purpose. A sense of unease crept over me, and just then, my wolf, Alice, spoke up.
“Yuri, I sense something?”
“What?” I asked, feeling my heart suddenly racing, a restless sensation stirring within me, urging me to do something. And at the same time, I caught a whiff of a delightful scent, a mix of Cupressus funebris wood, jasmine flowers, and the early season snowflakes.
“Yuri, he... he’s our mate...”
Contrary to the excitement and happiness I’ve heard from other wolves upon finding their mates, Alice’s voice trembled with fear. And after hearing her words, I felt as though I couldn’t stand steady.
Loid... is my mate?
My mate isn’t Damian, but Loid?
When I turned eighteen, Alice and I were eager to know who our mate would be. I hoped it would be Damian, but even if it wasn’t, it mattered little. My mother told me that Damian would choose me as his Luna because an Alpha could choose his Luna.
At that time, I thought it didn’t matter who my mate was anymore.
But at this moment, discovering that Loid is my mate, I couldn’t contain my shock.
Surely he must feel it too. Surely he must feel that I am his mate. But his face remained indifferent, unaffected. Loid’s gaze swept over me, then swiftly moved away.
He stayed silent, saying nothing, so I stayed silent too. I had the right to reject him, and he surely wouldn’t accept me either. That way, no one would know that he and I were mates.
I reassured myself like that when Damian stood up, glaring at Loid.
“Don’t think just because you’re valued by our father, you can do whatever you want. What’s the meaning behind your actions today? Do you respect me and Beta Donovan?”
At this, Loid halted his steps, speaking, “Actually, I came here today with a purpose. I have a gift for Beta Donovan.”
With that said, he gestured outside, raising his voice. “Bring it in.”
As soon as he finished, footsteps echoed outside, and two soldiers escorted a man inside, throwing him to the ground before us.
I too, was taken aback.
It was Admiral Sharron.
Why was he here? A chill ran through me.
“After investigation, I have concluded that the mastermind behind the previous assassination of the Lycan King is Admiral Sharron. The day before I arrived at his house, he had already fled. But unexpectedly, today we found him in Beta Donovan’s house along with a lot of stolen goods. This... how should I explain this?” Loid’s voice rang out, lofty and arrogant, his gaze piercing towards my father and Damian, as if framing them with a grave accusation, a conspiracy.
I trembled, unsure if my father was plotting something.
I turned back to see my father’s face gradually turning pale. He had been furious and imposing, but Sharron’s appearance seemed to douse him with cold water, extinguishing the fire within him and replacing it with an clear unease.
Damian, too, stiffened, his face not revealing much emotion, but it was clear he wasn’t comfortable.
And my mother looked fearful.
These reactions made me realize that my father and Damian were truly not clean in this matter.
“That scoundrel... this scoundrel!” My father suddenly roared, then rushed forward to slap Sharron hard across the face, then grabbed him by the collar.
“Speak! Why were you at my house? What were you planning to do?”
My father’s actions frightened me, and seeing that, my mother immediately came over and hugged me.
“It’s okay, it’s okay...” she reassured me.
My father that his mouth was bleeding hit Sharron so hard. And before that, it seemed Loid had already dealt with him harshly.
Sharron fell to the ground, and my father was about to kick him when a sudden arm restrained him, and it was none other than Loid.
“Beta Donovan, you’re not in the interrogation committee. You have no authority to assault others. Do you want to worsen your charges?”
My father now glanced towards Loid, lowering his voice and pushing his hand away.
“What are you saying, General? I was just momentarily enraged. Who wouldn’t lose control when falsely accused?”
With that said, he straightened his coat, then pointed at Sharron’s face again.
“Speak! Why were you here? You better be honest with me, or I will make sure you and your entire family pay dearly!” My father emphasized each word, especially “your family.”
Sharron was now dazed from the blows, relying on the firm grip of the two soldiers on either side to steady himself. He raised his head to look at my father, then suddenly shifted his gaze towards me and my mother. This startled me.
“I came to meet... Luna Fiona.”
