Chapter 5

I was so bored and sick lying in the hospital bed that it felt like I would never recover. It's been three days since I've been here, and my mom has already visited me. Helena never showed her face again after our last conversation. She never comes back. Maybe she was busy, I think. My co-worker also visits me. Especially Andy, who visits every night after his shift. He brings me fruits and flowers. “Hello, My Savannah.” I rolled my eyes when I heard Andy's voice again. I look at the wall clock, and it's eight in the evening. “You're here again?” I raised one eyebrow and gave him a fake smile. It doesn't mean I don't like him visiting me every day. It's just that I'm not used to him giving me flowers. He seems as if he's courting me. “Flowers for you and fruits.” He grinned and put the basket of fruits and flowers on the table. “Oh, I see. You can move your injured leg now,” he noticed while checking my leg. I sat on the bed and faced him. “Yes. So, it means I can get out of here soon,” I replied happily. “Good to hear that, I can't wait to invite you for a date.” I glared at him. “Are you not tired, Andy? I mean... aren't you tired of joking or teasing me?” I asked him seriously. He looks at me directly in the eyes. “I'm not joking, Sav, I was serious when I told you last time that I liked you and wanted to go out with you,” he confessed. “I’m just teasing you at work because you always ignore my feelings, even though you already know my feelings towards you.” I sighed after hearing his confession. I don't know what to say. And he was right, I already knew how he felt about me, but I just ignored it because I wanted us to remain friends but… Should I give him a chance to date me? Or reject him again? “Are you doing this to pursue me and accept your invitation?” I asked him with narrowed eyes. He grinned. “C'mon Sav, just one date. I promise you; you won't regret it, and we never know...” He shrugged his shoulders and smiled mischievously. “...you might fall in love with me.” I laughed at him and he pouted his lips pretending that my reactions hurt him. “Okay fine, just one date after I recover my injured leg,” I answered while still laughing. “Oh yes! I will always remind you that you agree with that date,” he said happily. “I have to go, see you tomorrow.” He winked at me before he left. I didn't know how long I slept because when I woke up, Helena was in front of me, giving me her sweetest smile. “Hi, darling! How are you?” “I’m doing great, how about you?” I responded to her with a crooked voice. “I have been busy these past few days. I talked to the doctor, and he said you can leave anytime you want. And I got your discharge paper already. You can go out now.” My eyebrows furrowed. I was confused, but I tried to decipher what she said. “I will call my mom to help me-” “No need, I have my car at your service,” she offered and smiled proudly. I forced a smile at her, it seemed that she was in a hurry. “Isn't it too much? You're always helping me.” “It's my pleasure dear,” she answered flatly. That day I was discharged from the hospital and went home safely. Helena took care of everything I needed, even though I refused, she was so persistent. I didn't tell my mom about her. I felt something was wrong when I learned that I had a twin or just a lookalike of me. I am not comfortable talking about Helena with her, but she knows that someone helped me when I was confined to the hospital. My Mom said to me that she wanted to see her and thank her, but I lied to her. I told her that Helena was busy, and I didn't know when she would come back to visit me again. It's been two weeks since Helena called me on the phone, she wanted to talk to me in private. Her voice sounds problematic. I hope she was not broken-hearted; I don't know how to deal with it when she wants my advice. “Mom, I will go out for a while with my friend. I'll be right back within an hour.” Thank goodness I was able to walk again. My mom looks at me, and then her gaze drops to my legs. “I'm fine, Mom, nothing to worry about,” I assured her before I opened the door, ready to go out. I noticed Helena's car outside waiting for me. “Did you bring your cell phone?” my mom asks worriedly. “Yes, don't worry,” I responded immediately. “Will your friend pick you up?” she asks again. “Yes, Mom, and she’s waiting outside,” I replied. “Bye, Mom! I love you.” I walked towards her and kissed her cheeks before I left the house. Helena took me to a fancy restaurant. I felt self-conscious because of my outfit. I wear black jeans, a loose shirt, and Converse shoes. Every woman in the restaurant wears a casual dress. The host leads us to the private table. She even gave me a critical look before she left us at the table. “What do you want? Please feel free to choose.” I heard Helena's faint voice. I guess she was not in the mood. I looked at the menu, and my eyes went wide; the price of the food was equal to my monthly salary. It was very expensive. I swallowed my saliva because I felt my throat was dry. I closed the menu and put it back on the table. Helena's brows furrowed. “What's wrong? Don't you like the food?” she asks, curious. This was my first time in a fancy restaurant. That's why I felt so uncomfortable. “The food looks delicious. It's just that... It's very expensive.” I said, embarrassed, but smiling politely. “It's my treat, Savannah. Order what you want,” she told me nonchalantly as I looked back at the menu. “Just order for me, if you don't mind,” I said with shyness. She looked at me and shrugged her shoulders as if she were saying whatever, or it was fine with her. The food she ordered was very delicious, and I ate as much as I wanted. She ordered too much food for us. I noticed that Helena ate only veggies and a small amount of carbs. After we ate, the desserts were served. It is a red velvet cake with cream cheese. I'm already full, but I can't resist the dessert. I only finished it in three bites. And after that, we drank wine. “Are you okay, Helena? You look problematic.” I noticed she was not in her normal self again. She smiled at me weakly. “I think I need your help, Savannah, I don't know what to do. But if you don't want to help me it's fine with me.” Her voice was so sad. “No, it's fine. I will help you as long as I can,” I answered instantly. Staring in her face right now, she looks so devastated. I wanted to return her favor for what she did to me. Her face brightened at what I said. She held my hands. It felt awkward, but I let her be. “I am so thankful I met you, I owe you this one, Savannah. I promise you can also benefit if you help me,” she said hopefully. I withdrew my hands from her grip. Why am I nervous when she says that I can also benefit if I help her? I smiled nervously. “What do you mean I can also benefit if I help you?” I can't help but ask. “Yes, it is. I will also help you in return. If you help me, I will take care of your mom’s medication for her illness. I will help her until she recovers.” My eyes widened when I heard what she said. How did she know that my mom had an illness? My mouth slightly opened to say something, but nothing came out. I wanted to tell her that I was willing to help her without asking in return, but couldn't find any words. "I will take care of everything, so you do not need to worry about your mother." She spoke with assurance, and I could see that she meant business. I cleared my throat as if there was something in it. “I will help you willingly without asking for anything in return, Helena. You don't have to help me,” I said to her genuinely. She shakes her head. “No, Savannah, I insist. I wanted to help you and your mom.” “Then what do you want?” I asked her and met her gaze. “Just pretend to be me,” she answered immediately, as if it was nothing to her. For a moment, I forgot to ask her how she knew about my mother’s illness. My mind was like a broken voice recording because what she said was repeatedly played in my mind. Pretend to be her? Is she serious? How can I pretend to be her? I was speechless. ***
