Alexander’s POV
I felt much better after my rest. I had fallen into a deep sleep, too exhausted to even have a dream. I was glad that I felt refreshed when I woke up, which meant that I could enjoy myself at tonight's carnival.
I took a quick shower and got ready for tonight. I had promised the boys a night of fun at the carnival. Stacy would be joining us with some of the cheerleaders, but I think we might be able to ditch them at some point. I surely was not in the mood to hold someone’s hand tonight. I had better plans for myself.
It wasn’t as if I was dating Stacy; she was just an easy release for me. Whatever she thinks this is, it is going to be a rude awakening when she finds out I am not into her at all.
I pulled a white shirt over my head, grabbed a pair of old ripped jeans from my closet, and fitted my combat boots. I then checked for my wallet, grabbed my favorite hoody with a silver howling wolf at the back, and walked out the door. The guys were all waiting for me in the game room, playing a round of pool. It was already past 7 p.m. when we headed for the door.
“Are we stopping for some extra entertainment?” Jack, one of the warriors, asked with a smirk.
“Depends on what entertainment you are referring to?” I answered with a wink.
We usually stop along the way and get some wolfsbane. It's a poison for werewolves, but in small doses, it kicks you in a way that no alcohol will. Our bodies burn off alcohol so fast that it’s almost a waste to consume the stuff. So, primarily, we add a drop or two of wolfsbane to the alcohol to give it a longer kick.
We headed out, got our poison from a friend, and left for the carnival.
Dad will kill me if he ever finds out we are experimenting with wolfsbane. Just one too many doses might send us to the infirmary. Not only can it harm our human side, but it could cause major damage to our wolves as well. While under the influence, we can’t heal as fast as normal; it can cause blackouts, and neither can we shift until the wolfsbane wears off.
“Ready?” Jack asked, intoxicated already. A snicker escaped my lips. I was as drunk as he was at Wolfsbane. Xavier was the only one who refused to drink any of it. He argued that it was his duty to protect me should anything happen.
We paid our entry fee, trying to keep our composure, but we ended up all giggling like little girls and tumbling over our own feet. It was obvious that we were intoxicated.
We first headed to the drop tower. The guys wanted something to get our adrenaline pumping, forcing the wolfsbane to act faster through our veins. The ride had 16 seats, of which 10 were occupied by us, and the ride towered 30 meters above the ground. The neon lights glowed against the tower’s body, making it even more thrilling to attempt to kill the beast. After we had all been locked in by the safety bar, and fastened our seat belts, we were launched to the top of the tower in seconds, making the guys next to me squeal like little girls. I flung my head back and laughed at them.
“Scary cats”, I screamed at them, but my voice was lost in the wind as the tower dropped us and made us fall quickly under the action of gravity, making us feel weightless in our seats. That I didn’t expect to happen, and my heart felt as if it made it to my throat, bouncing uncontrollably in my chest. The ride launched us back to the top of the tower unexpectedly, leaving us feeling as if we weighed a ton. Providing us with the adrenaline rush that we so craved. The slide then headed down again at the speed of light and came to a stop in the middle of the tower. By this time, the wolfsbane had done his job, clearly having all of us under some sort of curse. Finally, we slid down slowly, coming to a stop. We could hardly find our footing. Our knees were weak, and our heads were spinning. But that didn’t keep us from finding the next ride.
“Where to next?” The guys didn’t even think of getting any rest between rides; next up was the roller coaster.
After a couple of more rides, hunger hit us, and we made our way to the food court. Now, the average wolf will eat between three and five times more than the average human daily due to our fast metabolism. Shifting into our wolves burns a lot of energy.
The food court was crowded with wolves, everyone waiting for their food.
“Xavier, will you organize some food, please?” I called my Beta. He gave me a nod of the head and walked towards the line.
The wolfsbane had started to wear off, and we were ready for a second shot to get us going. Jack had sneaked some in, and what better way than to get both my poison and food served to me?
Jack and I took off for the House of Mirrors, with the rest of the crowd following behind us. We had made it halfway up the stairs when I was called out.
“Alex, are you going to ignore me the whole night?” Stacy’s screeching voice sent shivers down my back as her voice reached my ears. When did she get so annoying? I didn’t even notice that she was tangling along. Was I so out of it that I didn’t even notice her? Oh well, who gives a sh*t? Not me. I chuckled under my breath, and Jack smirked with me as if he found the situation just as amusing as I did. Most likely, he shared his bed with her too. We gave each other a look, mischief written in both our expressions.
We both turned around to face her.
Stacy pulled a perfect eyebrow at me, crossed her arms, and tapped her foot on the ground, clearly annoyed at my lack of interest in her.
I walked back down the steps towards her and gave her a smirk. “I think you should go home and wait for me,” I whispered in her ear. Her eyes shot up, sparking with excitement, as she looked at me and then nodded. She gave a wave to the girls that she was ready to leave, and all of them, along with some of the males, took off together, leaving five of us boys free again. She looked pretty pleased with herself as she walked away, swaying her hips.
We burst out laughing at the scene. “Let’s go; I really need a drink after that,” I sneered. What did I ever see in her? Jack followed my lead, amused. He knows I will let her wait the entire night, leaving her cold and alone. Yes, I was cold-blooded when it came to clingy and obsessed she-wolfs.
I headed back up the stairs, taking my place in front as the leader of the pack. I was ready to be entertained by the images the mirrors would provide. The guys were still chanting and laughing about my getting away from Stacy when the scent of apples and berries hit my nose.
Kevin stirred and chanted “mate” hazily in the back of my mind. That was my own doing, making him drunk as well. He will punish me later for my acts of foolishness.
I froze in the doorway, uncertain of what to do. My breath had been knocked out of my lungs by her intoxicating smell. Panic rose in me as scenes from the dream flashed before my eyes. The smell was strong, just as strong as I could recall from this morning in the hall. She is here, my mate, my beautiful mate... I was excited to see her and to be able to finally meet and touch her. Jack had picked up on my sudden change of mood.
“What’s up, man?” He bumps his shoulder against mine, trying to get my attention with a frown between his eyes.
“Nothing…” I paused, taking a deep breath of her scent to compose myself. What I didn’t expect next was a deafening pain that would sprout through my chest, pulling me down to my knees.
“Dude, are you okay? You don’t look so good.” Xavier had pushed through the crowd and made his way to me, trying to help me get on my feet.
“Mate…” I whispered between short breaths. The pain had me paralyzed, unable to move. I could smell that she was still there, watching me.
I could hear her heartbeat spiral, her sweet blood pumping through her veins, creating a toxic poison with her powerful smell. I could sense her fear towards me as if I had burned and tortured her with silver.
The dream. Does she have them too?
“What?” Xavier asked, confused at my words.
“My mate is here…” I tried to explain through the pain.
“Dude, why are you on your knees then?”
“I, I, I can’t move. The pain…”
“Oh, f*ck Jack, did you officially poison our future Alpha?” Xavier’s voice echoed through the room, pulling attention toward us. He was pissed; he never raised his voice.
The other two, Gamma David and Delta James, had joined the commotion when they heard Xavier’s outburst toward Jack.
“Help me get him up; we must get him to the infirmity,” Xavier commanded.
“NO!” I ordered, and they all halted. “She’s here; look for her.” I pleaded. “I need to find her…”
“You can find her tomorrow!” Xavier spit the words at me, annoyed: “You are having wolfsbane poisoning!” He tried to convert me.
“I say now!” They whimpered in fear and bowed their heads.
“We don’t even know what your so-called mate looks like, and neither do you!” David chirped.
“Dude, there are hundreds of people inside,” Jack argued.
“I don’t care,” I dismissed them, “I need to find her now.”
