Chapter 9

1969 Words
Alexander’s POV I had chased after two idiotic mutts, smelling like my mate and making fools out of Kevin and me. Well, more me than Kevin. If I had listened to Xavier and not taken the wolfsbane, I would most probably have my sweet, little, beautiful mate in my arms right now. I wouldn’t have taken the bait and chased like a fool after them. But no..!!! Being the irresponsible future Alpha that I am, I took the drug to get a kick out of it… I have my reasons for doing it, but who would have thought that she would be here tonight? So close and so far, I was sulking in my mind and scolding myself for the stupid act. I should have known there was something up when the two walked towards us hand in hand and then took off when they reached the exit. Halfway through the confusion, Kevin, however, had awakened from his infused slumber, which, of course, was my fault, and had corrected the error for us. This was after I almost claimed Amy as my mate. Kevin caught a semi-Alpha-wolf fit and almost lost control of Amy and Jeremy’s asses. If it were not for my strong Beta calming Kevin down, I would have had two pack members dead tonight. Dad certainly would have had a field day on my ass for not controlling my beast then. And I would have explained what happened. And, and, and... Uhm... thank the goddess for giving me a Beta with remarkable qualities and ensuring that their asses were still alive and well. I couldn’t afford to get into trouble, not with all the irresponsible crap I did tonight. Dad will certainly disown me or send me to get sober. Yes, I had sort of a drug problem. Well, drugs don't really do anything for us, because our bodies burn the toxins off as fast as alcohol. I should know; I have experimented with them all, trying to get a buzz. Wolfsbane was the best of all of them. I could control my drug problem. I hardly used any, but when I did, I made sure I did it well. Especially on carnival nights and special occasions. I shook my head to clear my thoughts. I need to find her first. “Where is she?” Kevin roared. They quivered in fear and bent their heads. The other four wolves submitted as well. “Answer me!” I commanded, anger radiating from me. I had taken over from Kevin, forcing him to give me control back. Amy looked at Jeremy, pleading for him to answer. They spoke in silence and then turned to face the woods, answering my question in silence. “Take them back to the pack house; I will deal with the two later,” I commanded my Gamma David and Delta James. "Yes, Alpha,” they answered in unison, grabbing the two fools and dragging them back to the packhouse. Jack followed them too. “Where are you going?” Xavier asked. “To find my mate.” His eyes widened, and he didn’t dare to argue. He just nodded his head. The following second, Kevin forced me to the back of my mind, shifting mid-air and racing after the scent of my mate. Leaving Xavier behind, we disappeared into the woods. A depressed howl followed, echoing through the forest as Kevin called to our mate. I loathed this section of the woodland. It has already been 10 years. It brought back bad memories that should be buried deeper in the jungle, where no one could ever find them. I sat patiently in the back of my mind, letting Kevin drive. We were stronger when we worked together; interfering would just make a bigger mess, and he was already pissed at me. As I see the trees flying by us as we run and the sound of the small waterfall coming closer, my memories of this place come flooding back. We used to come and play here excessively. This was our hiding place from all the high-ranking adults. No different was the night from the Carnival. We had gotten bored with the rides—the ones we were allowed to ride—and took off for the small waterfall close to the clearing. My little sister, Lisa, was running and playing behind us. She was two years younger than me. She would have been the same age as Lizzy today. Both of them looked similar and were constantly mistaken for twins or as one another. The only differences were their eye colors. Elizabeth had these big silver sparkling orbs and Lisa had light blue ones that could look through a person, worse than Amy… We had reached the waterfall and were swimming and playing, not caring if we got wet or dirty. Xavier had brought Jeremy with him; the two were always inseparable, until recently, to look after Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a handful, a wild child. She was mischievous and still is. One thing I know is that she is highly intelligent, fast, and strong, and she could camouflage herself extremely well, better than most trained senior warriors could. I was jealous of her skills for a 7-year-old. I still am. Elizabeth had taken up the challenge of playing hide-and-seek. We were all game. I had a score to settle and needed to show her who was the better player in the game. We all went in different directions, hiding. Leaving Lizzy as the seeker. She found us one by one. Infuriated that she had found me, I headed back to the carnival, leaving my younger sister and the rest of the pups behind. Until... the scream... That horrible cry! The rotten smell tingled my senses, and I became nauseous from the smell. Rogues! Rogues in our packland! Rogues had overstepped into our lands and taken something that didn’t belong to them. Jeremy ran off to call the warriors; the rest of the pups had tried to hide. The warriors and ranks were alerted. They all rushed to the spot where the rogues were seen minutes ago. Only the smell was hanging in the air; we were too late. We had played too close to the pack boundary. Lisa was taken. It should have been her, not Lisa. I had to blame someone and Elizabeth fitted the bill perfectly, it was her idea to play hide in seek after all… My attention was pulled back when Kevin came to a quiet walk and took a stand between the tree lines, observing. We were close to the waterfall, and the mist was covering the pool at the bottom of the waterfall. It created an enchanted atmosphere. The apple and berry scent was mixed in with the mist, and it made my mouth water for a bite. I could see the back of the she-wolf stripped and standing near the pool with the moonlight kissing her skin. She looked breathtakingly beautiful under the light, and her skin reflected a silver glow around her. I've never witnessed or heard of it happening before. She looked like a goddess. She pulled her long black hair over her left shoulder and turned her head up to the sky. She looked a bit tense. I was admiring her beauty when the most excruciating scream left my sweet mate’s lips. My heart raced in terror. I wanted to help her. Kevin keeps us back; he refuses to give me control. My heart shattered when she released another horrid scream, the sound sending shivers down our bodies. Then it happened: the moon had reached its highest point, and the breaking of bones was shadowed in the silent night. She fell to her hands and knees, and the mist covered her naked body. I could see her frame like a gray shadow in the mist. Her frame quivered viciously, and her body had spiraled and curved to take shape. I know the pain and torment—the fire that penetrates through your body with the first shift. The first shift is always the worst, they say. It’s worse for higher-ranking wolves. It is believed that the stronger and more dominant the wolf, the worse the torture and pain of the shift. I shut my eyes for a second, trying to compose myself. It should be over soon. I prayed. I swallowed a big breath and opened my eyes. I need to see the last part of the transformation. The most beautiful and extraordinary woman I have ever seen was now standing next to my mate and calmly pulling her hands through the fur. The moonlight bounced around her, making her look like an angel from the heavens. Her long, silky blond hair flows down her back, and her sliver dress looks like mercury flowing around her body. She looked up, noticing me, disappointment readable in her icy blue eyes. I bent my head in submission. “Who is she?” I asked Kevin as he slowly lifted our heads. He rolled his eyes at me and said, "Don’t you know anything?” He spit at me. “Should I know her?” I asked, confused. Yet again he rolled his eyes at me, this time irritated: “She is our creator, and she is seriously pissed at you!” “Why? What did I do?” I asked, surprised. “What did you not do!?” he snarled, showing me his canines in my mind. He was sure angry at me. “If I could punish you, I would do so. But I am stuck with you until we die, so if she punishes you, I will be punished alongside you. And believe me, if I say this, Mr. Human, I will make you suffer the rest of our lives in some way or another.” Okay, okay, I didn’t expect that. My wolf had a death demand for me. It is nice to know I have been partnered up with a vengeance wolf. The goddess had vanished in the moonlight, and my mate had started to move again. I watched her shadow in the mist as she got on all four paws. First, she didn’t move from her spot, most probably perceiving her surroundings and appreciating the novel's different colors. Everything will be more extreme now that she has shifted. Subject to her wolf, she could have abilities and skills as well. She had moved to the edge of the pool. Kevin had gotten up, taking his chance to go and meet and claim his mate, when he stepped and cracked a stick under our big paws. Sh*t! It had interrupted our mate as she looked at her reflection in the water. Her ears had pointed up in the direction of the sound, and she turned toward us, ready to fight. The mist had thinned out around the pool where she once lay, and I could now visibly see her wolf. “WOW!” I gasped, surprised. Kevin just gave me a proud nod of his huge head mentally. “Your beautiful,” I mind-linked her, hoping that she could hear me. I was surprised at her size at first. She stood tall. An equal size to me, with an aura that would make anyone submit to her without using any strength, force, or command. She was pure. She was pure of heart, pure of magic, and pure in love, and I could sense the purity of her soul. She is an all-white wolf. She had a soft white glow around her body, and her fur was thick and soft. I guess that’s why the goddess stroked her fur; she was busy blessing her. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Then it hit me! She is a pure white wolf! ****
