Chapter 5: The path up to the bluff had been carved out of the side of the cliff face as well. Landings at the switchbacks had been located at natural wide spots, allowing traffic up and down the stairs a place to pass. Midway up the trek, they came to a natural flat; the setback hid the entirety of the buildings from the canyon floor. The structure was at least three stories tall with windows hollowed out to provide light into the cave beyond. Helena was surprised to find no guards at the doors. Even more of a surprise, the doors were twice Helena’s size by height, even more by width. Inside there was no floor, only bare stone covered in places by cushions or rugs.
