Chapter 1
Mia was out shopping when her phone buzzed in her purse. She wondered who the caller was. She was thinking of what to get her husband for their anniversary, and her phone had to interrupt. Mia checked the caller ID to see who it was. It had better be someone important if not, she knew she would snap. Her brows narrowed, and a small smile formed on her lips at the caller. It was Brian, her husband. Her belly tickled like it had butterflies in it. “Hello, honey,” Mia's sweet voice echoed through the phone. “I was just thinking about you.” There was a brief pause at the other end of the line and Mia could sense that something was wrong. “Brian, are you there?” Her voice was laced with worry. “Yeah,” he gave a prompt reply, “We need to talk.” “O-Okay,” she stuttered. “I'll be with you shortly. By the way, where should I meet you? At home? Office?” “Meet me at home in the next fifteen minutes,” his voice was void of warmth. The call was disconnected and Mia took the phone away from her ears and worry flushed through her. Mia could feel the awkwardness on the phone. She didn't understand why Brian sounded that way, and she needed to find out what the problem was. She glanced at the jewelry right in front of her and made a quick pick. She still needed to get her husband a gift. She paced the store and called a taxi. ** Mia arrived at the mansion trying to catch her breath. She reached for support by the side of the door. When she could steady herself, she reached for the doorknob and opened it. “Brian, are you okay?” Her voice shook, still trying to catch her breath. Brian tilted his head backward and then to the side to have a glimpse at her. “Took you forever to get here,” he said with a cold glare. Brian tossed a piece of paper to the ground and his cold words hung in the air, “Sign it.” Mia didn't understand what was going on. What is happening? Her eyes met with the content on the piece of paper, and she jolted in disbelief when the word, “ Divorce Agreement” came into view. “What is this, Brian? What is this divorce agreement?” Mia asked, even though she already knew the answer to her question. “Don't tell me you're blind not to see the content,” Brian’s cold voice hung in the air. “B-But,” Mia stammered, her eyes flickering around the room. “What is this, Brian? This must be a trick, right? A prank,” Mia laughed slightly. Maybe Brian is pranking her. It was their wedding anniversary anyway, so just maybe he wanted to surprise her. Brian's scream brought her back to reality, “Sign the damn paper.” Mia jolted and shivered slightly. She couldn't understand anything. Mia let out a sigh, “But why Brian?” She asked, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Haven't I been a good wife to you, Brian?” Mia clutched her skirt and tried hard not to cry. “Two years of marriage and this is what I get in return. I have done everything to please you, but what did I get in return? a divorce paper tossed to my face?” “All these years I tolerated you,” Brian snapped. “Because of you, Grandpa made me live in misery. I had to marry you because he threatened me with the family business.” “So this was all a set-up, right? To get the business empire?” Mia sniffled, trying so hard to hold back the tears that threatened to fall. “I never loved you, Mia,” his words sliced through the thick air. “Because of one silly good, Grandpa made me live two years of my life a miserable man, “he roared. “And now, I have all the power to myself and the company, I don't see any need to continue with this marriage. You were my greatest mistake, Mia. Grandpa just had to take a nobody in and force me to marry her,” he scoffed. Mia was getting tired of this family looking down on her. Ever since Grandpa Wade took her in, all Brian and his mother had done was to look down on her. Mia doesn't have to obey his every command for the rest of her life, so just maybe, this is a good thing. She chuckled slightly, sniffing her watery nose, “You don't have to insult me, Brian. I'm also human, how dare you?” “Don't you dare speak to me that way, woman!” Brian sneered, causing Mia to shiver slightly. Every day, they made sure her confidence was crushed. Life with Brian has been a disaster for Mia. Brian and his mother, Mary, made sure they constantly belittled her in every possible way. “Since you want to play dumb with me,” Brian paused briefly, “I'll make you understand. I do not want this marriage anymore,” he said with a cold expression on his face. “You're going to sign the damn papers and everything else will be history.” He moved closer to the dining hall and poured his favorite whiskey into a glass cup and sipped from it, glaring at her in disdain. Mia felt her legs shaking like jelly as she slumped to the ground with tears welling up her eyes. She always knew a day like this would eventually come, but she thought the love she had shown him for the past two years would melt his icy heart and amend their broken marriage. But, she was wrong to think that Brian would ever come to love her. “W-Why?” Mia stuttered, “What have I ever done wrong? All these years I've only loved you and cared for you. I obeyed your every command without questioning your authority. You treated me coldly, your Mother disregards me and treats me like a servant instead of a daughter-in-law. All this and for once, I never complained.” Mia sniffled and tilted her head backward to hold back the tears that threatened to fall. “In the end, all I get is divorce as a reward for my love and selflessness,” Mia let out a cold laugh. “You're such a heartless beast,” Mia held her chest tightly to ease the sharp pain that sliced through it. Brian let out a cold laugh, “You want to talk about cruelty, huh?” He moved slowly towards her with his fist clenched and a dark expression on his face. Mia gulped down her saliva nervously and shifted back on the ground with her gaze low. She couldn't dare lock eyes with the man she called her husband. “You really want to talk about cruelty?” Brian sneered, “Because of you, I couldn't be with the woman I love,” he roared. “Because of you, Grandpa disapproved of Vanessa.” How dare she call him a beast when she made his life a living hell? The very day Grandpa Wade brought her in, Brian wished he had never been born a Wilson. Being married to her was more like an exchange for his freedom. “What?” Mia asked, confusion written on her face. “Who is Vanessa?” Mia asked, her voice breaking. She didn't understand what Brian was talking about. “Who is this woman?”
