Chapter 13When Gabriel next awoke, he was lying on the dusty floor of a cave. On hearing raised voices, Gabriel made sure not to move. Opening his eyes a crack, Gabriel peered through his lashes hoping to have some idea of what was going on before they knew he was conscious.
Gabriel instantly recognised his captors: Hank Reed and his brother, Jake. Anger warred with fear. Just what was going on? Why had the brothers kidnapped him?
“Quit yer whining, Jake. I had to bring him out here while you lazed around. So we sleep in a cave for the night. Tomorrow, when the ranger’s taken care of, we’ll be well paid and can buy any bed we want.”
“Is Red that sure the ranger’ll come for him?’ Jake’s nasally whine made Gabriel wince, but he remained as still as he could and kept listening.
