Chapter 12After an unproductive day following a false lead, Jesse returned to the Copper Mine Hotel. To his surprise, Gabriel wasn’t at the desk. On asking for his key, Jesse was also handed a small note.
“Is Mr Gabe off?” Jesse knew he shouldn’t ask and risk drawing attention, but he’d really hoped to speak with Gabriel.
“All I know is that I was called in to cover. No one here’s seen him since he finished his morning shift. His father’s fit to burst, he’s so angry.” The man shrugged. “Sorry.”
The hairs on the nape of Jesse’s neck rose and he strode quickly away. Taking the stairs two at a time, Jesse stopped at the top to tear the note open. Reading the message, Jesse was sure his heart was caught in a vice.
