Chapter 10Even as he rode back to town, Jesse already had it in mind to return to the Johnson ranch. If Johnson had inadvertently allowed Texas Red to work there, it wasn’t unlikely that his foreman would try to hide it. No one liked having their business examined, especially by a ranger. Next time, he’d be sure to head out directly to the corrals rather than being diverted into the house.
As he approached the smithy and stables, Jesse grinned at the friendly wave from John.
“Busy day, Mr Cooper?” John urged the small boy at his side to go over to Jesse as he dismounted. The boy glanced up at Jesse, his eyes wide, before leading Nugget to the stables.
