Chapter 7To Gabriel’s relief, Jesse fell into step with him and no one followed them out of the saloon. For a moment Gabriel had been sure Jesse would end up in a fight, and he’d have been of no real help. Except to run and get the sheriff. But Jesse could have been badly beaten by the time that man dragged himself over.
The encounter seemed to have had a big effect on the ranger. Jesse’s gaze was fixed ahead, and Gabriel sighed. I might as well not be here.
