Jude swallowed hard the closer he got to Agnes' mom. By the time he stood in front of her, she had already seen and recognized him. He was Jude Laswon after all. Moreover, he was the man that had gotten her daughter pregnant and left her out in the cold to suffer alone, only to try and return to them when he felt it was convenient.
'Jude Laswon' Agnes' mom called before he uttered any words out of his mouth.
Jude was stunned.
'What? I don't imagine you are silly enough to assume I won't recognize you' the old lady said, getting up slowly to head inside her house.
'Come in,' she turned to beckon to him when she realized that he was still standing on the spot, looking dazed and confused. Jude didn't know if it was a good idea to follow the woman inside or not. It could be a trap as far as he was concerned. However, he trailed slowly behind her while she walked in.
He spotted his son, Jake, sitting in his carriage with a bib over his neck and smiling at Jude when they locked eyes. Jude fought hard to hold himself back from hurrying over to grab and hold his son once again. The time Agnes' mom spent fetching Agnes to come over to accept or reject her visitor, allowed Jude time to observe Jake's features keenly.
He thought the boy was a replica of himself. He was still basking in this euphoria when a surprised Agnes showed up from inside the house, glaring at him with anger and shock.
'Have you lost your mind?' she asked Jude. Jude turned in the direction of her voice and put up a nervous smile.
'Hello Agnes' he said with a light tone.
'The almighty Jude Laswon, how humbling of you to stalk me all over the city, do you realize this is my mom's house?'Agnes asked him. 'Wait a damn minute, how did you even find me here? You didn't go back home last night? I don't get it,' Agnes asked.
'You stopped by here before going home last night, Agnes. I followed you from the club' Jude replied, staring at her with soft eyes.
'Take a seat then, what can I offer you?' she asked him after heaving a tired sigh.
'Nothing really, I just thought of saying hello to my son and his mom,' a relieved Jude replied.
'Yea right, your son' Agnes said. 'There he is, you can go play with him. When you are done, the door is open for you to get out' she replied, and left the living room before Jude got the chance to say anything else to her.
Jude was going to hold her back and make her understand that he was there for her as well, but he didn't want anything to sabotage his bonding with his son. He might upset her into asking him to get out before he had a chance to get a hold of the boy, so he watched her walk away.
'He has the guts to come to my house? How did he find his way here? How did he know this place?' Agnes' mom asked her when she excused herself from Jude and Jake.
'He stalked me all the way from the club yesterday. You know I stopped here first to pick up Jake, that's how he found his way around,' Agnes replied.
'Creep. I want him out of my house before I lose my mind' Agnes' mom said with as much bile in her voice as there could possibly be.
'Mom, allow him to see his son. If he all of a sudden is interested in seeing his son, maybe we should let him do so' Agnes replied. 'Besides, he gave me some money yesterday,' she added.
'He gave you some money,' her mom repeated scornfully. 'And how much is that money?' she asked.
'Forty thousand' Agnes said, as a matter of fact.
Her mom's eyes popped open.
'Liar' she replied, smiling at Agnes sarcastically. Agnes said nothing else than reach for the bag she had come over to her mom's house with and revealed the money to her.
'Watch' Agnes said while she started to count the cash. Her mom counted with her until it was confirmed that, indeed, Jude had given her forty thousand dollars for real.
'Did you just call forty thousand some money?' Agnes' mom asked her with as much shock in her voice as possible. Agnes shrugged. 'Bloody creep is buying his way into our lives' the old lady said, snatching the money from Agnes and taking out a few notes for herself.
'Mom. Consider that your share until I happen to get another one, somehow,' Agnes told her mom.
'Happen to?' Agnes' mom asked in surprise. 'Rip him off every dime he has. He deserves even worse for not being there when you needed him the most. Imagine being gracious for nine months. You didn't show up for him to be there throughout the nine months you carried Jake in your belly, you told him about Jake when Jake had already been born. Yet he looked you and your infant son in the eyes and asked you to leave? He even threatened to humiliate you, or have you forgotten how you came home crying?' Agnes' mom asked her. 'Rip every dime off him until he begs you to give him a break,' the old lady added.
Agnes listened to her mom go off concerning Jude angrily. She totally agreed with everything her mom said, Jude was a complete asshole to her and Jake in the past, and deserved every ill-treatment her mom wanted her to dish out to him, but the issue was that she had grown a soft spot for him. She was sure of that the previous night after Jude left and she could not take her mind off him. It was such a strange development for her for a fact, and no matter how hard she tried to bury the feeling, she couldn't deny that it was there.
