Jude could not take his mind off his son. Agnes was slowly creeping into his mind as well as a matter of fact, and everything just seemed to be going too fast for him to comprehend. He wondered how it would have turned out if he had accepted the baby from the very start when Agnes first came by his office.
'Are you okay sir?' the police patrol that had just flagged Jude down asked him. 'Faulty car? or what?' the bulky man added. Jude smiled back at him sheepishly. He had been deep in thought and was unaware of how slow he was driving.
'Yes, I'm just trying to manage this junk so I can get home in one piece' Jude lied.
'Junk? did you just say junk?' the patrol policeman asked, inspecting the exterior of Jude's car with some iota of shock. He was looking at a brand new Range Rover Sport 2024 model, yet Jude called it junk? How suspicious. Jude rolled his eyes at the man's intrusion. The condition of his car most definitely had nothing to do with the police. Besides, he was moving too slow, not the other way round and, as far as Jude was concerned, that was not an offence in any way.
'License and registration please.' The policeman went back to the driver's window to ask Jude.
'Is there a problem, officer? I didn't break any road laws, did I?' Jude asked:
'License and registration please, sir' the policeman insisted. Jude reluctantly fished out the car documents from the pigeon hole and handed them to the policeman. After a couple of seconds of inspecting Jude's car documents, the policeman peered into the window to look at Jude properly.
'Laswon? the CEO of the exporting agency?' the man asked Jude.
'Okay, can I leave now?' Jude asked impatiently. 'You had no right to stop me in the first place' he added, snatching his documents from the man and zooming off quickly. The fact that he had been spotted on the freeway without security bothered him a lot. It was very risky. Even if the man was a police officer, there were no taking chances whatsoever. Jude was too wealthy to be seen outside by chance by a random person, policeman or not.
Having escaped the police, he started towards his house this time with his mind completely alert.
'2 AM?' Jude exclaimed when he looked at the time on the dashboard of his car. He had just pulled up to his entrance and wondered why he didn't feel tired at all considering what time it was at the moment. Henry started to call him. Jude frowned at his cellphone while it rang. It was too late for anyone to make any phone calls to anybody unless it was an emergency, and Jude hoped that was not the case with Henry.
'Dude, where the hell have you been?' Henry asked with an elated tone.
'What do you mean where the hell have I been? Did you not leave me to tag along with your friend, Jane, at the club? What are you talking about?' Jude asked.
'I have been calling you bro, for ages,' Henry replied, 'Did you not see my missed calls?' he added. Jude rolled his eyes, he didn't see or hear his phone ring at all, and he wondered why it happened that way.
'What's up? Why have you been calling then?' Jude asked, ignoring the fact that he had missed several calls from Henry and he had no idea about it. Only the stars knew how many other calls he had missed. He couldn't wait to check it out.
'Nothing, I was just checking on you after banging your receptionist senseless,' Henry replied, laughing hysterically at the mischievous fact and information.
'I don't care about who you had s****l intercourse with, Henry. It's too late at night for you to call me up for such triviality,' Jude said impatiently.
'I have been calling you for a while, you know? Before it got this late, I only got worried, and I hoped you were okay. That's why I still called. I only thought to tip you in with this little spice, you know?' Henry said, chuckling briefly.
'Meanwhile, were you at the club up until now?' Henry asked with a small amount of shock and concern in his tone. Jude kept quiet concerning that question. He started to think of what to tell Jude to distract him from insisting on an answer from him.
'Are you there?' Henry inquired after Jude had been quiet for long enough.
'Yes, I am. I have a call coming in. It's my dad. I hope it's not an emergency. I'll talk to you later,' Jude replied hurriedly and hung up the call. Henry laughed. He knew Jude well enough to figure out that he was hiding something.
'Not after being friends for more than twenty years, you hit me with this flimsy lie?' Henry texted Jude back immediately after he hung up. Jude ignored the text for as long as he could, but Henry was bent on finding out what was up, so he started to call Jude again.
'For f**k's sake Henry. Okay, I'll see you tomorrow. I'd tell you what you want to hear, which is absolutely nothing. I need some rest, okay? Goodnight.' Jude told Henry and waited for him to hang up. Henry hung up when he was sure that Jude was not going to budge.
Jude could hardly sleep. The only thing on his mind was his son, and his son's mom, Agnes. He cursed silently for the fact that his own child was out there living below standard. If he had not insisted on Agnes accepting that money from him, he would have felt even worse. He started to brainstorm. While he lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling, he started to think of how he could take care of mother and child without anyone finding out. Agnes was no match for him when it came to status and who he should be dating, and as much as he had started to feel some way about her, he thought about keeping her away from his parents and best friend Henry until the time was right.
