Agnes, as much as she hated Jude for how he treated her and their son in the past, could not deny the impact his being around her for this brief amount of time had caused. She found herself thinking about him for the better part of the night. As a matter of fact, she was surprised at how much she cared about him arriving at his home safely. Wherever he lived, she could imagine it was a distance from her place and, because it was very late when he left, wealthy people like him were not to be found alone at that time of the night.
'The bad guys never care to go on any breaks' she said to herself while she weighed the possibility of Jude getting harmed. Jake cooed into her ears. By now she had removed him from his cradle to lay by her while he slept, unknown to her that the infant boy had opened his eyes, and was staring at her while she was thinking about his dad.
'Hey, there little prince' Agnes whispered when she realized that Jake was awake. Deep in her heart she considered herself lucky for Jude to show up when he did, and hand her forty thousand dollars like it was nothing.
'Daddy's here to rescue us' she added. Jake's response gave off the impression that he was scolding her for pretending not to have been interested in his visit earlier. Meanwhile, here she was losing sleep because of how excited she was about what she perceived was a promising future for her and her son, because of their affiliation with the rich billionaire CEO, Jude Lawson.
Back to Jude and if he arrived home safe, she started to think again.
'I should have given him my number for crying out loud' she whispered in regret. Jake cooed again.
'Are you scolding me?' she asked him jokingly, bursting into a bout of laughter. Jake laughed as well. He had to be very much in sync with her energy because there was no other explanation as to why he replied to her every thought with a worthy coo.
Eventually, the break of dawn arrived. Agnes had just fallen asleep a couple of hours ago and didn't intend to get up just yet when Jake jolted her awake with a shrill cry.
'For f**k's sake' Agnes yelped, jolting awake and springing up from the bed as if she was in a military camp.
'Jake' she whispered, reaching for the lad, who tried all he could to get a grip of her.
'You are going to give mummy a heart attack one of these days if you are not careful' she told him while she reached for and carried him, rocking him in her arms like the angel prince that he was.
'At least you have made my life better' she said when she remembered the position she was in. Her mind went to the money Jude had given her the previous night, and she rushed to her safe to confirm that it was still there. She had never had all that money to herself before, she had never even come across that sort of money before, so it was understandable for her to be paranoid. She smiled with satisfaction when she saw that it was all there and intact. Her own lottery wins, that was what she considered.
Jude woke up in the same headspace that he had slept in, thinking of his son and Agnes. The urge to pay them another visit was heavy on him. Luckily it was the weekend.
'Even if it were a Monday, I'm sure I wouldn't give a care in the world' he muttered as he slid into his sweat pants and sleeveless hoodie, ready for a run. Off he went as soon as he got dressed. Jude's energy was different. His son's handsome eyes kept staring back at him in his mind's eye, and somehow it gave him an adrenaline boost that kept him on his toes throughout his run. Usually, he would make occasional stops to catch his breath, but not today. Today he went all the way and back. Jude hummed his favorite tune while he stepped into the shower to clean up. At one point, he realized how happy he was and was about to act like he didn't know the reason, but it was too intense and obvious for him to tell himself a lie. As soon as he was done cleaning up, he had a quick breakfast of cereal, which he didn't even finish, and then hopped into his car and headed back to Agnes' house.
'I'd see how she would be able to ask me to leave this time around,' he said to himself while he headed towards her house at the far end of town.
'I'm on my way to yours' Henry's text came in while Jude was on the way to Agnes'
'At 7 in the morning?' Jude asked himself out loud. He wished he could text Henry to ask him about that but he was driving, so there was no way to make that happen. However, after not receiving feedback from Jude within the time frame he thought was enough to have received one, Henry started to call his best friend that Saturday morning. Jude was irritated. It was because Jude was trying to hide his business from Henry. If not, it was nothing new for Henry to show up at Jude's house that early, unannounced sometimes.
'Hello?' Jude asked in a calm yet annoyed tone. Henry waited for a while before he spoke back to his best friend.
'Is everything okay?' he asked Jude in a concerned tone. 'Did I do something wrong? are you upset about my being with your receptionist?' Henry asked.
He was genuinely confused.
'Who, Jane?' Jude asked scornfully. 'Dude, what the f**k? Of course not. I'm not at home at the moment, I'm sure you can hear me driving across the city.' Jude replied.
'Yes, I actually can' Henry said. 'What's up, what's going on? Where are you headed?' he asked.
'My parent's house' Jude lied.
'Óh, okay. I'd meet up with you there then,' Henry insisted.
'Hold on, I'll tell you when to show up,' Jude told Henry and hung up the call quickly.
