Chapter Five

1000 Words
Bat     There was no news. Well there was but none they would tell me because I wasn’t her next of kin. So all I could do was sit on the narrow plastic chair in the hospital waiting room and wait. Wait to hear if Sarah had lost her baby. Because of me. I had thrust her out of the way. I hadn’t meant to but in my anger at Bane I hadn’t been thinking. I had just reacted. And as always when it came to Sarah my reaction had been violent. Now she was losing her baby because of me. My baby. A roar sounded from down the corridor. It was the only warning I had before Diablo slammed into me . Sending me toppling off the chair and on to the hard tiled floor. I didn’t fight back. Whatever he decided to do to me I would take. He was my president , my alpha and I deserved any punishment he wanted to give out. Sarah was his sister. It didn’t matter if I was his best and oldest friend , I had hurt her. Maybe hurt our unborn cub. Riding me to the floor. Diablos fist smashed into my nose. Which exploded in a shower of blood and I still didn’t fight back. “What the f**k did you do?” He growled into my face. His spittle flying. “I leave you alone with her. I trust you to look after her and less than twenty four hours later she’s in hospital?” There’s nothing but anger in his voice. A threat of violence that can’t be ignored. My cat wants me to fight back. Clawing at my insides to be let out. I fight back against him. I won’t defend myself. Not after what I had done. If Diablo wanted to beat me to a pulp then I would let him. “Stop it Diablo.” Sarah’s voice was shaky. My head turned towards her from my place in the floor. She was on her feet but pale. Leaning heavily on the door frame. Her eyes red rimmed and puffy. She had been crying. And it broke my heart, Sarah had cried over me more times than I could count but this was the worst. “Leave him alone.” “I was done anyway.” Heaving his bulk from me, reaching down to drag me to my feet. His eyes clashed with mine. “For now.” His meaning was clear. This wasn’t over. Not by a long shot . The only reason he had stopped was because he didn’t want to upset his sister any more. “How are you? How is the ….” Diablo took Sarah in his arms. His big hands smoothing down her back. She pulled away slightly, her hand reaching for me. For a second I looked at her trembling fingers. I didn’t deserve her. Even now when she should hate me, she was looking for a way to comfort me. When it should be the other way around. “Bat?” Fresh tears prick her eyes as I step away. “Bat please don’t step away from me. I need you.” “The baby?” My voice came out choked. My chest rattled as I exhaled. What would I do if she had really lost the baby? Would she forgive me? Hell, would I be able to forgive myself? “The baby is fine. His heart beat is strong. They don’t know what happened and need to do some more tests but he’s ok.” Pulling her from her brothers arms I crushed her against my chest. I smothered her hair with kisses.  Our child was ok. Sarah wouldn’t hate me. “I’m sorry Sarah. So f*****g sorry.” I rained down my kisses on her as she relaxed against me. “I didn’t mean for you to get hurt. I will do better.” “You have nothing to be sorry for. It wasn’t your fault.” It was though. But I couldn’t change the past now. All I could do was All I could do was promise her that it wouldn’t happen again. Whatever it took I would keep her safe. Sarah and her child. Even if that meant keeping her safe from me. “Don’t leave me Bat. Please.” A line appeared between her eyebrows as she stared up at me. “I need you. They want to do a scan and …” “I’m not going anywhere baby. I’m not leaving your side until you feel better.” Softly I stroked my fingers down her wet, tear stained cheek. “Did you just way scan? You get to see your baby?” “We.” She corrected. “We get to see him. I want you with me Bat.”           “Bat.” Sarah’s voice was excited, her fingers squeezing mine, painfully. My knuckles cracked and I threw  a startled look at her face. She looked rapt. Her eyes glassy with tears as she gazed at the small screen to the side. I followed her look. Squinting at the fuzzy white picture there. “Look.” I frowned. I was looking. And I couldn’t see s**t. “I don’t even know what I’m looking at.” I admitted. “Here.” The women pressed  her little wand into Sarah’s stomach , her other hand pointing to the screen. To a little alien thing. “Theres your little peanut.” I couldn’t drag my eyes away from the screen. “The little flicker you see is the heart beat. It’s nice and strong.” “Did you hear that Bat?” Sarah’s voice was excited. “I heard.” I reached to touch the screen with my fingertips. Covering the small image before turning back to her. “Jesus Sarah.” I ran my hand through my hair. “What?” For a second she looked confused. “That’s OUR BABY.”
