Chapter 4

Andy continued to double over with laughter until he stopped to take a breath and looked up at the Alpha glaring at him. Andy’s face got serious and he gulped in a breath and held to keep from laughing. “Now that everyone is keeping it together.” The Alpha says shooting a pointed look at Andy who was still holding his breath. He melted slightly under the Alpha’s glare and let out the air he was holding. "The reason you are here, as I was telling Jake and Ella, is that I want the three of you to learn to fight together as a team. You will train together to attack and defend as a group. Then, once you have mastered it, you will help me teach all the up-and-coming classes and our elite warriors as well.” Ella could not believe that the Alpha had picked her for this task. She was not an elite warrior or even a ranked wolf in the pack. True, she was not yet old enough to get her wolf, but Jake and Andy were the Alpha and Beta’s sons. They are stronger and faster naturally. The Alpha stopped talking and was looking at Ella now. “I can tell from the look on your face that you have not heard a word I just said.” Ella’s face was instantly scarlet. Her face was half the reason she could never get away with anything. Her instant blushes gave her away. “Ella, I know you don’t think that you are cut out for this, but since we don’t know your history, and we can all feel that you have a fairly strong aura already, even without your wolf. I think that you are the perfect she-wolf to work on this project.” Out of the corner of her eye Ella could see Andy shaking his head, disagreeing with the Alpha. He was snickering with his mouth covered behind the Alpha’s back. He had covered his mouth to hide his laughter. “It appears we are going to be working on just fighting in pairs today.” The Alpha said with a sigh, and Andy’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. He started waving goodbye to Ella with his lower lip pouting out. The Alpha raised his arm and, without turning around, said “Andy go run laps until we are done here today. When you learn to grow up and act like a civil adult wolf, then you will be able to return.” Andy glared at Ella. A look of hatred so intense that Ella was sure her heart should have stopped. “OK, we are starting out with pairs defending. The two of you paired together facing me. I’m the threat. You will work together to contain me and take me down.” Jake and Ella moved closer as the Alpha went over some best strategies to distract and flank or defend and chase off. He explained when and why to use each of these strategies, and then they tried out each one in turn, doing them over and over with the Alpha critiquing their approach, style, and technique. For today, they were fighting in human form. Once Ella had her wolf for a few weeks, then they would begin practicing both ways. They were out there for two hours trying different scenarios. By the time the Alpha called it quits for the day, Andy was walking around the track holding a stitch in his side. The Alpha waved him in so he came to stand next to Jake. “We will be practicing this three mornings a week for now. Once Ella has her wolf, and they are ready to go, it will be every day. We meet back here on Wednesday morning at sun up, ready to work.” The Alpha said, and turned to start picking up the mats. Jake and Andy jogged off towards the pack house to go shower. Ella stayed to help the Alpha pick up the mats and bring them to the equipment shed. They worked in silence. After all the mats were stowed away, Ella turned to the Alpha. “Alpha Wade, what did you mean by my aura being so powerful that you can feel it already?” The Alpha sat down on the bench that was on the sidelines for spectators and waiting parents when they have youth training. “Ella we don’t know much more of your history other than what was in the note that was found with you. Your Mom was too ill to care for you and passed away when you were born and all she knew about your father was that he was a strong werewolf from one of the local packs. There are three in the area, and at the time that you were born there was a change in leadership at all three. Some of those changes got bloody. The Mountain Side pack and The Silver Stream pack both had all of their ranked wolves killed as well as many of their warriors." The Alpha looked at Ella, "It has been assumed for a while now that you are the daughter of one of them. While we will not know for sure what rank your aura is until you have your wolf, to feel it this early you most certainly are a ranked wolf. To feel it this strongly already, my guess is you are either a very powerful beta, or you are an alpha blood.” The Alpha looked Ella in the eyes. “You may have noticed that I have taken a larger interest in you over the last year. That is because a she-wolf of higher rank needs to have more training. Not only to fight and defend the pack, but also to defend herself." The Alpha turned so his whole body faced her. "A she-wolf of great power is rare. If you are indeed an Alpha and word gets out, there will be Alphas from all over banging down our door to get you to mate with them. An Alpha’s power is great, but it can be made greater with his Luna. If his Luna is powerful also, he could be unstoppable. I feel it is my job to prepare you for that. We have a lot of work to do once you have your wolf.” The Alpha just put his hand on Ella’s shoulder and gave a gentle squeeze and then got up and walked toward the pack house. Ella was left with her thoughts for the next hour.
