Chapter 5
“Well, needless to say, Jasper, my new rules severely cut down on the amount of time Dwayne and I spent together,” Shay told the bloodhound as he tore himself away from his memories. “I was glad that Dwayne was making an effort to follow them. At the same time, it made me sad to pass Dwayne in the hallways and have him look away when I pretended I didn’t see him. It all was so unfair to have your life dictated to by what others thought of you. It also made me feel really guilty. I knew that Dwayne loved me and wanted so much more from our relationship, but he was willing to keep to the rules for my sake.”
The dog got up, moved closer to Shay, and laid his head in Shay’s lap.
“It got worse,” Shay said, shaking his head as he stroked Jasper. “We were in physics class together. One six week rotation we were assigned to sit at the same lab table. The other two guys at the table were jocks. They either completely ignored Dwayne or made belittling jokes about him, and I didn’t say anything to stop it. I was so afraid of being found out, I let these jerks have their fun at Dwayne’s expense. Dwayne never held it against me when I apologized later when we were alone together at his house. He just held me in his arms and said he understood.”
Shay sighed, took a deep breath, leaned back against the sofa, and closed his eyes. “And I can’t believe the things I did to him at the end of the year.”
