Chapter 21

John POV

“Sorry about the dress shopping” I say as we step inside the house

“I reckon if the creek don’t rise we’ll get it done by the end of the week” she says smiling. What creek? She moves up the stairs as I unpack the groceries. Violet gave me her debit card, she trusts me enough with her money, to get some things.

“Get up ya’ lazy dogs!” I hear Jess’s commanding voice and I chuckle

“Jess” Violet groans and I laugh

“Nah com’ on. You’ll grow roots lying in bed all day” Jess argues. Violet groans but soon I hear multiple footsteps coming down the stairs

“Good afternoon” I say but she just grunts and I laugh at her

“Something funny there Gigantor?” she groans

“You sweet cheeks. Coffee?” I ask and she nods

“Thanks” she says as I place her cup down. Duncan isn’t much better, damn that guy did a number on him

“Hey man” he says much friendlier than grumpy over here

“Hey, how are you feeling?” I ask and he shrugs

“Had worse, damn I’m hungry” he says and we start making lunch, later we’re in the living room watching a movie, something about love and what not. Violet is stretched out on the couch, her back resting against my chest, while Duncan is lying with his head on Jess’s lap

“Okay so he convinced her to go with him, to make sure the lie keeps on going and now he’s falling in love with her?” Duncan asks

“Yeah, isn’t it romantic?” Violet asks

“Little stupid if you ask me” I chant and she gives me a glare

“It’s love” she says but I shake my head

“No, that’s not love” I say and she sits up

“Really, well enlighten me” she challenges and I smile

“Well love, real love is when you can’t think of anyone else except that special person. When her smile can light up the world and her tears break your spirit. When giving your life is not enough, but giving your time means everything. You’ll get up early to make her breakfast or go to bed late finishing up something just so that she can sleep those extra 10 minutes, because she’s tired and worn out. Love isn’t just a feeling, it’s doing, seeing and actions. You live love, you don’t just feel it” I say and I am met with teary eyed ladies and a scowling Duncan

“That’s beautiful. Where did that come from?” Violet asks wiping at her tears

“I just know that’s what it is” I say shrugging

“Dude, you’re making me look bad” Duncan scowls and I chuckle

“Sorry my bad man” I say grinning. Violet settles back down and we watch another movie before we retire for the night. Later that week the girls get the dresses and Duncan and I go suit shopping, not the most fun activity but we were under instruction. Now I’m at the hospital waiting for the doctor to do her check up

“Mr Anderson, I must say you are a quick healer. I’ll remove the sutures, this might sting a bit” she says and starts removing it. When we’re done I greet her and go home. My job starts next week, I’m really excited about it. Alexis is giving me a chance, so I won’t screw it up. I walk into the house and look around, I need to work out I’m restless so I dive into the pool. I swim until my muscles are aching and begging for a break, then I push myself a little harder. By the time I get out I feel eyes on  me again, I glance around and spot Violet standing in her bedroom window looking down at me. I wave smiling and she gives me a small wave before disappearing.

“Hey!” she calls from my front door and I greet back from my room

“Hey! Be right out” I say and pull on my shirt stepping out

“Hey, how was your day?” I ask and she smiles handing me a soda

“Same s**t, different day and yours?” she asks

“Got the sutures removed” I say and she nods

“Wow, that was quick”

“Yeah the doctor said I’m a fast healer. Listen I’m going to start work on Monday night, will you be okay alone?” I ask and she chuckles

“I’m used to living alone John, don’t worry about me” she says

“Yeah I know but I’m worried about you. You seem off the past few weeks” I say and her smile falters for a second

“No I’m peachy” she says her fake smile firmly in place

“Okay well you’ll tell me if something is bothering you right?”

“I promise” she says but somehow I know she’s lying. She’s hiding something but I don’t want to force it out of her, she’ll tell me when she’s ready

*5 Days later*

“Okay so you excited?” she asks and I nod putting on my jacket. It’s like my uniform, the club’s logo is on the pocket.

“There, don’t you look all dapper” she says and I smile kissing her cheek

“Thanks for being you” I say and she nods

“Well go show them who’s boss big guy. Don’t fall for the soul sucker’s advances and have a good time” she says walking me to the taxi

“I will, they won’t get me and you must be safe. Lock the doors when you get inside” I say and she nods

“Yes Gigantor sir” she says and I chuckle

“Okay sweet cheeks, see ya in the morning” I say and get in the taxi. She waves me off, like I did for her and we turn the corner

“Lovely lady you have there” the driver says and I smile

“Yeah, she is” I say looking at the passing scenery. Soon enough we stop at the club and my new job starts. The first night goes by quickly, by 3am I walk in the door with a huge smile on my face. She wasn’t wrong about the soul suckers, they’re relentless, but the other guys said it came with the job description. Giving me tips on how to get them to lay off in a nice way, two of the other guys wear wedding rings, they’re not married but they have girlfriends. The other two are gay, not a couple but that seem to be a good deterrent for the soul suckers. I still have to find my thing, for now I’ll just keep my head down and do my job, the pay isn’t bad I think. We have one weekend off per month and we have discount on a gym membership, how cool is that? I’m joining the others from tomorrow. They go to the gym at 6pm, our shifts start at 9pm so that works perfectly. I will have time to spend with Vi and work out before going to work. I shower and take a seat on the couch waiting for 5am still smiling. Today was a good day

Hades POV

“You did what?!” I yell so angry I could set a continent on fire

“It slipped out” he says and I grab his throat in fury

“Down Hades” Abby’s voice calls from the door and I glance up

“Not now my love, I’m in the middle of a meeting” I say as calmly as possible. She doesn’t even look up from the paperwork she’s going through in her hand walking toward me

“Let the nice man go” she says sweetly and I squeeze his throat tighter. He gasps for air and she casually places the folder on the desk turning to us, places her hand gently over mine holding his throat smiling at me

“Come now, amor de mi vida, deep breaths. We can settle this in an orderly fashion” she says calming my rage and I release him. He bends over gasping and choking for air

“If you ever so much as look at him again I’ll have your head. Get to your post” my voice low and threatening he looks up and nods

“Yes my lord” he says before darting out the door

“Now, about the issue we have with Ares, can’t you just apologize?” she asks sitting down on the desk

“I will not apologize for that ingrate’s bad behavior” I state walking around the desk and sitting down, she moves around the desk and sits down on my lap

“Such an unnecessary argument over an insignificant incident” she says tracing my jaw, sending shivers up my spine

“Abby, my darling wife, you should know by now that seduction doesn’t work” I say and she smiles, leans in and starts planting kisses up my neck to my ear before she whispers

“I have two children that proves the contrary my handsome husband”

“Touché belle” I breathe out and she giggles. Oh dear, time to lock the doors. I capture her lips in a soft sensual kiss and she kisses me back with want

“Did you come here to seduce me?” I ask planting kisses down her neck

“No, I came here to discuss other matters, but that can wait. We haven’t made love in weeks. Are you bored with me?” she asks and I sit back abruptly staring at her

“What? How can you think that? You are the love of my life Abby, nothing is more important than you. I will no sooner drown in the river of souls than tire of you” I say honestly and she smiles

“Then show me” she says and I lift her effortlessly onto the desk, kissing her with all the passion I possess. I snap my fingers and we’re in our room, she smiles a seductive smile looking at me through hooded lashes

“I love that trick” she says gesturing with her finger for me to come closer. Crawling over her my tongue traces a path to her cleavage.
