Chapter Six

Rhyder I shouldn’t have gotten involved, I knew that . I just couldn’t help it. It was more than seeing the blood suckers hands on the poor wide eyed girl in the funky t shirt. It was the girl herself. The way she didn’t even try to fight him as he dragged her into the shadowy corner. Was she really that easily lead? That she didn’t even try to put up a fight. When Faith and the sins had started letting the leaches into the campus, they had sworn they would police them. That there would be no dead students littering Nine Oaks. And here I was witnessing one man handling a girl. A poor first year girl. A girl with the prettiest eyes I had ever seen. Even from across the room they were mesmerising. I had moved without thinking. Crossing the room and pulling her back against my body. It was only then, that I realised . He hadn’t been forcing her into a dark corner. She knew him. What was it with girls going for the darkly dangerous bad boys. Not that Drake was a bad boy, he was just a leech. A condescending annoying leach. With the maturity of a gnat. But he did have a point about the way the Sins were looking at her. Especially Jasper, who was whispering with Faith. It seemed the little first year had their attention and Drake didn’t seem comfortable being on their radar. I couldn’t blame him for that. No one in the preternatural community felt entirely comfortable around them. Alone they were powerful enough. Together they were almost unstoppable. Hell they had taken down a full blown angel only a few years ago. I felt sorry for the poor girl, she didn’t stand a chance. “Thank you.” I started, the small jump making the drink slosh over my knuckles. I had been so immersed in my head that I hadn’t even realised that she had headed over to to the table where I was stood, nursing my drink. I looked down at her. Her dark eyes were even more pretty close up. Hell she was pretty. All of her. “For?” I raised my eyebrow at her. “Coming to my rescue.” Her voice was quiet, a slight lilt of an accent. “It was very sweet.” I shrugged. Suddenly embarrassed. “I didn’t realise you knew him.” “I don’t really. I just met him a few days ago. We sat and talked for a few minutes that’s all.” She gave me a small smile. “So I wouldn’t say a few words at midnight would be knowing someone.” Of course he had been sulking around at midnight. I don’t know why I had expected anything different. “I don’t really know a lot of people.” She finished quietly. For a moment I stared down at her and then my hand moved on its own violation. She shook it. Pain zipped through me, like being electrocuted. She seemed oblivious of it as she continued to grin up at me. Leaving me to rub the still tingling hand on my jeans. What the hell was that? “I’m Rhyder.” I finally said. “First name Flynn?” She giggled . I frowned down at her and the giggle died. “Sorry it’s a character from a Disney movie.” She back peddled fast. “My favourite Disney movie.” The girl was absolutely crazy. I didn’t understand a thing she was talking about. “I’ve never watched a Disney movie.” I admitted. And this time she looked at me like I was the crazy one. “Not EVER?” I shook my head. “Not a single one. But you didn’t tell me your name.” “Bella.” Bella. How could it be anything but. It suited her so well it should have been obvious. “It’s nice to meet you Bella. Do you want a drink.” I let my eyes drift around the now packed room. “I seem to have lost my friends.” “Sure.” She suddenly sounded unsure. “But I should warn you , I have a boyfriend. I don’t …” I cut her off with a laugh. “Relax girl,I was just offering to stand and drink with you, not give you the mating bond.” Her eyes narrowed. Shit. I had thought she was a paranormal. But she had no idea what I was talking about. Bella was human. So why was everyone interested in her? Why was I so interested in her? “You’ve noticed our newest arrival then?” I turned sharply to find Asher behind me. His face was unreadable. But there was something to the set of it that told me I wasn’t going to like this conversation. I looked at him blankly. “Bella?” He prompted. “She seems a sweet kid.” I shrugged. She had seemed like a sweet kid. So that technically wasn’t a lie. “She’s not a kid and you know it.” His eyes darkened as he followed my gaze to where Bella was now talking to Faith. Both of them were smiling. “She’s what a year or so younger than you.” He added. “So?” “So if you have any interest in her , you best nip that s**t in the bud now.” I stared at him. There it was . I knew someone would warn me off her. Not that it was needed. I had no interest in first years at all. “I don’t have any interest in her.” “No?” Asher chuckled. “You have been talking to her for over an hour. You seemed pretty interested to us.” A growl fell from my lips. “What has it got to do to you? You guys getting bored and want to add another female to the mix?” Ashers eyes blazed red. “Watch your tone with me. Faith is And always will be the only one for us.” He sounded sincere but I wasn’t sure I believed him. “Then why the fascination with the human?” For a moment he just stared at me and then he started laughing. Great big belly laughs. He laughed so hard tears streamed from his eyes. He slapped his own thigh. “Oh you think she is human, that is adorable.” I could do nothing but stare at him. “She didn’t know what I was, and had absolutely no idea what the leech was either…” “That’s because she has no clue what she even is yet.”
