Chapter 12

Chapter 12 Clara's POV "Miss Clara?" I look up, silently chiding myself for forgetting where I was for the briefest moment. "Yes?" "The documents?" "Oh, right", I take them from Allie's grip. "We should do this. As you said, it's great for the company and will yield great profits." "Yay", Allie did a little victory dance. "Besides, you'd get a bit more bonus to your salary." She grinned widely, seeming pleased. "So, we're doing this?" "Heck yes", I winked. "Put a call through to them and we'll set a date for a proper meeting." "Of course", Allie seemed all too pleased. "Excuse me." I walk to the mini fridge sitting at the corner, pulling out a bottle of water before unscrewing it, emptying the bottle in a few smooth gulps. Just the thought of sitting for hours in the same room with Dominic was so upsetting, I was internally seething. But, I couldn't miss this chance. What was that saying? Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. If I wanted to ruin Dominic, I couldn't just be rash. My judgement at the gathering was a bit clouded by blind rage, hence the slap. But, I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of seeing me lose my cool. Not again. For now, I'd play the irrefutable role of passive aggressiveness as expected of an ex born from a bitter breakup. I gathered my purse and coat, stepping out of the office. Allie was clacking away at her laptop, her feet tapping to an unheard melody. She looked up the moment I stepped out. "Heading home? It's quite early." It's not in my habit to leave the office at the normal hours. I got a sort of thrill from pouring through documents till the sun completely leaves the sky. "Yes. I have a date with Maxwell." She grinned. "Power couple." "You should leave early too. Get some rest, it'll be a busy week." "Yes ma'am", she threw a two finger salute. Nodding in satisfaction, I walked off leaving the looming glass building behind me. I still had a few hours to get ready for my date, so I took the long route just to get Nico's favourite snack at a bakery at the edge of the city. As expected, he was absolutely ecstatic once he spotted the brown paper bag, practically ripped it out of my hand before muttering a quick thank you and shoving one into his mouth. "Slow down", I ruffled his head before grabbing his hand and leading him to the sitting room. His nanny was cleaning up the toys strewn haphazardly on the floor. "Good evening ma", she entwined her fingers, her head slightly bowed. "Gretchen, I've told you countless times to call me Clara", I pinned her with a look. "I keep forgetting", she smiled shyly. "I'll be out soon. Can you take care of him for a few hours more? I'll be back by...ten-ish?" "Of course", she nodded. "I'm sorry for not informing you on time. I'll pay extra for the stress." "I love Nico. It isn't much of a bother." "Thank you", I threw her a relieved sigh. "Nico, I think you should share your snack with Gretchen. Isn't that what good boys do?" "Yes mummy", he grinned, pushing the paper bag to Gretchen. "You can eat a lot." I chuckled, jogging up the flight of stairs before settling into my room. It took less than twenty minutes to decide on a dress and even shorter to get ready. I put on minimal makeup and just the right amount of jewellery. Maxwell knocked on the door right on time. "Hey", I greeted with a smile. "Hi", he answered, just a little breathless. I seemed to have this effect on Maxwell. Unintentionally, I found that I could make him breathless and his eyes plastered on me for the entire night without even doing anything out of the ordinary. "Shall we?", I pinched his arm. "Yes. Of course." "Great", I grinned. "Gretchen, I'm leaving." "Of course. Nico's already dozing off." "Thank you. I'll see you soon?" "Definitely." Maxwell jogged to the other side of the door, pulling it open for me. I slid in, watching himself settle into the driver's seat. "You won't believe how amazing this place is." "Really?" "Yes. The decor is to die for. It's no wonder the upper echelons of the packs scramble after a reservation." "Can't wait", I attempted to feel excited. We arrived in no time, the valet took the keys from Maxwell just as he took my hand in his. I silently thanked the moon goddess for my choice of dressing. Every single person in the room was extravagantly dressed for a simple dinner. Their necks shimmered with diamond studded necklaces and clothes that could feed rogue werewolves for a year. Seeing this almost made me resentful. I knew I was now a part of this stupidly rich community that didn't know what to do with their money even if it was written in a bold red colour in upper case. But, no matter how much wealth I accumulate, that poor and helpless twenty two year old lady four years ago still haunts me. Maxwell must've sensed my change in mood as he threw me a brief glance. "Everything alright?" "Yes", I mustered a smile. "Everything's perfect", I let myself take in the decor of the place. Maxwell was right. It dripped with wealth and affluence, coupled with the light chatter and occasional glass clinking, I could see the appeal. We settled into our chairs and I reached for the menu, my eyes skimming the paper. Even a glass of water costs a whopping thirty thousand. Fucking thieves. "What would you get?" Just before I could answer, I heard the now familiar, nerve gritting voice of our dearest Morgana. "What the f**k?" Great. Just what I needed on this very beautiful night. My arch nemesis and the spawn of the devil. Could this night get any more f*****g amazing? Something told me, it would.
