Chapter 11
Clara's POV
"Hey", I threw a lazy smile at Maxwell who stepped into my study, his eyes accessing the place.
"Hi", he greeted, his tone devoid of any semblance of attention.
I frowned, pushing my chair aside and coming to stand in front of him. "Is something wrong?"
"No", he answered, a bit too quickly.
"Maxwell, you shouldn't lie to me of all people. I thought we were past that."
He seemed hesitant for a brief second before speaking. "That Dominic."
"Yes..."
"Stay away from him. Make sure you do that."
I wasn't planning to be buddy-buddy with Dominic but Maxwell's concern had me in a tight spot.
"Is something wrong? I thought you didn't know Dominic in that manner."
"He...", he sighed loudly, running a hand through his hair. "We went to the same school", he finally admitted, avoiding my gaze. "And I can tell you that he's nothing but bad news."
I let myself think for a short while. Ever since I was rejected from the Silver Fangs pack, I ensured I cut off everything oddly related to Dominic. How did I somehow stumble across his old classmate?
Maxwell must've sensed my thoughts as his eyes widened.
"No. We weren't even relatively close. I hate his f*****g guts."
I c****d my head, regarding him closely. "That's odd."
"Odd?"
"Most people adore Dominic."
"I don't", he shrugged.
Maxwell knew a bit of my troubled past but I may have left out the few important parts. One, Dominic was my ex and two, Nico is his child.
"You good?", his voice pulled me out of my internal monologue and I found myself nodding slowly.
"I'm fine. Just..."
"Stressed", he completed. "I understand."
His observation couldn't be farther from the truth but I let him believe it, throwing a pleasant smile in the mix.
"Why don't you like Dominic?"
Maxwell threw me a funny look. "You obviously don't like him either. You slapped him, remember?"
I scratched my neck. "Eh..."
"I don't know", he threw up his hands. "We've never really gotten along. I mean, our packs were rival packs right from the start. A friendship wouldn't be easy."
"Right", I dragged out. "That makes sense."
"Then why did you apologize to him at the gathering?"
I gnawed at my lower lip, a bad habit I had somehow grown accustomed to. "There's this project..."
Maxwell groaned in response, throwing his hands up in the air. "You're seriously unbelievable."
"Hear me out", I began, amusement in my voice. "It's a big project and..."
"And you wanted to get in their good graces?"
"Something like that."
It was still alarming just how much of a business woman I am, through and through. The past four years molded me to be this ruthless business tycoon. It was probably the one thing that brought my company to this ridiculously high chair. The media called me 'The Tremor', a very stupid name but very spot on.
I started off harmless, just a small business with an overconfident CEO.
"I had to make up for the whole slapping scene. I don't think a lot of people took my...violence to the golden Alpha very lightly."
"History there?"Maxwell raised a brow.
I paused, letting myself think clearly. "Something like that."
"Whatever", he waved off. "All that matters is that you're mine now."
I mustered a smile, almost baffled by his confidence. But, I guess that's just how he is.
"I made a reservation at that Italian restaurant. We should go test it out."
That's Maxwell, going all out.
"It takes weeks just to get a reservation there. How..."
"That's not for you to worry your pretty little head about. Don't forget. I'll drive."
"8pm?"
"Yes."
I watched Maxwell walk away, a bounce to his step. He was almost too good to be true. But I knew that after what I had gone through with Dominic, the moon goddess must've blessed me with him, just to counter the bad luck.
"He's perfect, isn't he?", my secretary walked in, her eyes following mine.
I tore off my eyes from Maxwell, focusing on her. Allie had been my secretary since I founded this company. She was efficient, great at her job and proper, not a hair out of place.
"Allie."
"You guys are like the power couple. I don't know how you did it, but you're so damn lucky."
I sensed the slightest hint of a bite, but I was used to reading a little too much into things.
"Lucky? Well, I guess so."
She sighed, looking off into space.
"Anything for me?"
Allie shook her head, snapping herself out of her thoughts, wherever they must've wandered to.
"Yes", she affirmed, setting a document on the table. "This is from Alpha Dominic of Silver Fangs pack. It's a proposed project."
"Hmm", I nodded once. I knew about this.
It was surprising that Dominic hadn't pulled out of this deal the moment he found out the CEO of the company was his very bitter ex. He had guts.
"Well, I went through this and let's just say it'll be a very good one for the company. Just an opinion though."
I let my eyes skim through the pages. They had signed the preliminary documents, basically throwing an obscene amount of money on our laps if we decide to pull out of the project.
One might think that this was a very proper way to f**k them over, just as they did to me. But, when I vowed to exact my revenge on Dominic and every single person who hurt me, I was thinking something more long-term.
Dominic and the Silver Fangs pack will take a huge financial blow with one single rejection from me, but, they'd get back up just as quickly. Well, maybe after a few gruesome months.
But, that's not what I want.
I want Dominic to grovel at my feet and beg while I watch his entire life burn behind him. I want to hurt him so deeply, so terribly that the devil himself will cower.
This wasn't the right time.
