After Caroline answered the door, I came to my senses immediately. As soon as our eyes connected, she questioned, "s**t, did I wake you up?" I sat up with my back against the headrest and said, "No, I've been awake for a while but didn't want to wake you up." In other words, I didn't want to disturb your sleep. As she sat down next to me on the bed, she replied, "No, Megs, you should have simply phoned me; do you want anything to eat or drink?"
