Chapter 8

RORY Kayden and I stared at each other, speechless. Hell, no! This couldn't be true! No one, and I mean NO ONE, was this cruel. I saw Professor MacLaughlin almost disappear behind the wall at the end of the corridor and started panicking. "Wait!" I screamed and tried to run after her, but I didn't make it far as the stupid pull hit me again. I was about to fall to the ground when two strong hands caught me. "Easy!" Kayden growled at me, wrapping his arms tighter around my waist. "You are going to break your bones. Or mine!" I turned to glare at him and simply let him know that the last option wasn't such a horrible idea. "What are you waiting for?" I hissed at him. "We need to catch up with her and at the very least, beg her to give us a different curse!" "Seriously, Rory?" He chuckled, which only annoyed me more. "What do you think are the chances of her changing her mind? In the one hour that we knew her, she managed to torture the whole class by pretending to teach us. If you ask me, it could be worse." "Worse?" I stared at him in awe. "What could be possibly worse than being stuck with you?!" "She could have swapped our bodies to get us to understand each other better!" He pointed out, and I froze. It was possible. Technically. No one was doing it, and it was prohibited, but McLaughlin was teaching us curses. And curses had no limits. The thought alone made my stomach churn. I swallowed with the realisation that it could indeed be worse, and I didn't want to test our professor's patience. "So, I have a few ideas," Kayden started talking but, honestly, what kind of ideas could he have? "Follow me!" I commanded, and he wanted to object, but I had already started walking, forcing him to follow me. "And where exactly are we going?" He asked. "To the one who can solve this little issue for us without a doubt!" I snapped, and the Lycan frowned. This union of ours wasn't working well. I tried to sense where he was because I didn't know the exact location, but luckily the royal aura wasn’t hard to miss for another royal. "He is psychotic!" Two students rushed out of the auditorium I sensed him in, and I knew I wasn't wrong. Loki was in there. Kayden grabbed my hand before we managed to enter the room. "Why are we here again?" He looked displeased as his eyes found the warlock prince sitting at the teacher's desk, but I did not care. "Loki!" I called my friend because I didn't want to waste any time, and his brows went up when he saw us. He was wearing his stupid glasses again, and I almost rolled my eyes. Except that I didn't because I needed to be on his good side. "Rory!" A grin stretched on his handsome face. "What a pleasant surprise! Isn't your lecture on a different day, though?" "It is," I confirmed. "But I urgently need your help!" "What happened?" He suddenly became serious, studying my face. "We had The Theory of Curses with McLaughlin!" I started to explain, and he took off the glasses, eyeing us both. "Oh?" The warlock's lips curled into a smirk. I waited for him to say something, do something… but he didn't move or give us any kind of reaction. The mischievous glint in his eyes gave him away, though. He already saw the curse around us. "Loki!" I yelled, slamming my hands on his desk, and the last students ran out of the room with pale faces. "Is that a way to talk to your teacher?" He chuckled, and I wanted to send a bolt of lightning at him. Only that, in his case, it wasn't much use as he had mastered lightning a long time ago. "You aren't officially my teacher until the first lesson!" I grunted, and the warlock leaned back in his chair with an amused expression on his face. "Then why did your grade just get lower?" He gave me a fake gasp. Sometimes I forget how much Loki loved games and mischief. We bonded during a very hard time for us, and I didn't get to see this side of him that often. "Loki!" I begged, pouting my lips and making the biggest eyes I could muster. "Please!" "Sorry, kiddo," he purred, "one curse at a time, and you know very well that right now, we have a bigger one to worry about." "But you know how to break ours!" I snapped. It was unbelievable that he wasn't sharing the answer with me. "Maybe I do, maybe I don't." A laugh rumbled in his chest. "Anyway, I have to have some solidarity with other teachers. I can't simply solve your problem for you and undermine Professor McLaughlin. She has a very serious learning process planned, and who am I to intervene?" "Loki, please!" I pointed at Kayden right next to me, who stood there with his arms crossed over his chest. "You can't seriously let me be tied to this– this–" I couldn't even find the words to describe him. Annoying, presumptuous, supercilious wolf! "What can I say," the warlock cleared his throat and stood up. "I fully believe in your abilities to solve this matter on your own." "Loki!" I gave him a reproachful glare. "What?" He fixed his stupid tie. "Every curse has a curse breaker. Find out why McLaughlin gave you this curse, and you will already be halfway there." "It could take us days!" I rubbed my forehead. I couldn't believe he was doing this to me. "Yeah," the warlock grinned. "It could. So, you'd better get going and start working together." "Unbelievable!" I huffed and turned on my heels to leave. Kayden and I were already at the door when Loki called my name. "Rory!" I was hoping he changed his mind, but he only gave me an innocent gaze. "Don't judge me. It's been a very hard year, and I do need some good entertainment." He didn't feel guilty about this. Not one bit. A growl escaped me. It was giving away my feelings most of the time. I never could control them when I was angry, which was one reason I hated my wolf side so much. "This was your great plan?" Kayden chuckled on my left. "To ask your boyfriend to break the curse for us?" "Eww. Loki isn't my boyfriend!" I twitched at the thought. "He is not?" The Lycan shrugged, but a vague smile curled the corners of his lips for some reason. "Of course not!" I shuddered slightly. I loved Loki, and he had quickly become a part of my life, but… he was like the cousin I never had and wasn't sure I needed. "So, the other guy, then?" Kayden continued questioning me. "What are you talking about?" I furrowed my brows in annoyance. "I don't have a boyfriend. I broke up with my fiancé literally days ago! Boyfriends are the last thing on my mind. " A mixture of emotions appeared on his face, but I couldn't read them. The bell rang, bringing us back to reality. "I have Ancient Rituals next," I informed my involuntary companion. "I have The Basics of Artefactorics," he let me know. Yeah. This wasn't working. "So, where do we go then?" I asked the question that was on both of our minds. A couple of students almost knocked us off our feet, hurrying to Loki's class. A part of me felt sorry for them because they were already late. And I was sure Loki wouldn't pass a chance of "more entertainment". "We are sorry, Professor!" One of the girls mumbled. "We are late because—" "Doesn't matter why, and no worries!" Loki sneered at them as we watched the show through the door. "Just come in and help me make the next potion. It's the one that could jog one's memory! You clearly need it." I gulped as I knew that potion. One wrong ingredient, and they would spill all of their secrets to everyone they meet before the effects die down. A part of me wanted to stay now because this would be entertaining even for me. Loki went for the door, probably to close it. The grin was still plastered on his face. "Oh, by the way, I heard they built a new wonderful mated couple building. I am sure you could get a room there… considering—" The door shut right before our noses and before I managed to swear in his face. "A room might not be such a bad idea," Kayden said all of a sudden, then cleared his throat. "It's not like we have much choice here." My jaw dropped at how quickly he gave up. Some general! "Let's go to the headmaster's office!" I suggested. "Surely they will not support this insanity!" He frowned but followed me, hands in his pockets. For some reason, I felt like he wouldn't be much help. ~***~ Half an hour later, we walked out of the headmaster's office with a set of keys for our new room, a new schedule to accommodate both our needs, and a plant they gave to all the couples to love and nourish in their new home. A plant! "I cannot believe this!" I muttered, still shocked at how they all laughed when we asked to remove the curse or to at least change it. They practically forced us to live together despite us hating each other's guts! What kind of university was it?! "Let's get my stuff first and then check yours," Kayden suggested, surprisingly calm about everything. Why on Earth was he so calm?! It seemed like we had no choice anymore whatsoever, and arguing was useless at this point. So, we just went to the men's dorms together. Kayden located his room without any trouble, even though we had all been here for less than twenty-four hours. We went in, and I took a quick look around. Kayden's part of the room was not done yet, unlike his neighbour's, who already had posters and personal things on his half. But what amazed me was when Kay bent down and got one single duffel bag from under his bed. "Let's go," he said, and I blinked. "Is that it?" I pointed at the bag with my eyes widened. "This is all you brought here?" "What else could I possibly need?" He raised a brow at me but then added, "I prefer to travel light. This might be an interesting experiment for me, but my duties still come first. I could be called back to the Lycan Kingdom any moment, and I have to be ready." "I seriously doubt you are the only general in your Kingdom," I snorted. "Surely there are others who can step in while you get to experiment. And in case of war, you can always leave some of your belongings here." "What is your point exactly?" He asked nonchalantly as he threw the bag over his shoulder. "My point is, do you have any kind of life?" I couldn't help myself even though it wasn't any of my business, really. He observed me for a few seconds, and a smirk appeared on his face. Kayden took a step in my direction, and I backed away. "Are you kidding me? I have THE life!" he sounded as confident as ever. "I am a noble lycan, a general who gets to experience the perks of his high rank and the thrill of the real battle. I have a family who loves and supports me. I have a purpose! That's more than anyone can say about themselves." He cornered me into an empty wall next to his bed. "Can you say you have a better life than me, Storm?" He placed his free hand on the wall right next to me and looked into my eyes as if he had already known the truth. I really couldn't say that, could I? He sounded like he had everything figured out, and my own life was a mess. My family betrayed me. Or at least some of them. My own position as a general was under threat now. I didn't use any perks of my royal status and was under suspicion of being a traitor. And maybe he didn't have many things with him, but at least they were his thing. I had a bunch of random stuff my stepmother packed for me. He had really won this round, and he knew it. He knew that I was a part lycan and hiding it. He already knew too much about me for my liking! And why wasn't he moving away? His breath was on my lips, and this was way too close! "Rory, what the hell are you doing here?!" I heard a familiar voice and flinched from the shock. Torrin looked as if he was furious. AUTHOR'S NOTE: Thank you for all the health wishes. I feel much better this week, so we are back on track.
