Chapter 3

"Not really," his voice was rough and coarse. It sent chills down my spine as I relished in its echoing sound. Not really...So there was a chance, right? "What a bore," I pout and slump in my chair. I take a peek at Isaac's neck. He's been claimed by one of the Alpha-Females. His mark consisted of a fox and wolf with conjoined tails, their foreheads leaning against each other.  Julia elbowed me lightly. "Are you thirsty?" "No." "Then why are you staring at his neck?" Julia was too intuitive for my taste but we got along well. She was from another coven, not made up of purebloods. "No reason" When Lunchtime rolled around I avoided the cafeteria. Usually, I'd eat lunch in the cafeteria but I saw Orion head for the cafeteria so I scratched the idea off my list. Purebloods have the ability to digest normal food. Something other than blood.  I rested on a bench that was on the roof of the school. It overlooked the trees that surrounded the entrance and the sports field in the back. Opening my bagged lunch, there was nothing. But there was a note from father. Emily, you didn't pick up your training tools this morning so I told your mother to not pack you lunch. "f**k you," I hissed and tossed the brown bag aside. I was positive that I picked up all the stuff I used for my training. He most likely did this on purpose. I hated him.  I stood on the edge of the roof and cast my eyes to the trees. I tried feeling for the presence of any animal I could satisfy my thirst with.  "Are you going to jump?" Orion's husky voice startled me.  "Eh?" I lost balance on the edge and felt my body tilt. It was unusual for me to lose balance and feel unnerved. A calloused hand wrapped around my wrist and tugged me back. My body bumped with his hard chest that his shirt clung onto. He had one arm secured around my shoulders.  "I'm sorry," he muttered and let go, taking multiple steps away.  For the first time, I felt flustered. But I needed to regain my composure. "Um, what are you doing here?" "For lunch." His reply was short and a bit sharp as he turned away.  I glanced at him as he took out a wrapped sandwich. I felt my stomach flip with hunger. The amazing scent of his Italian sub flooded my nostrils. I shook my head. I guess will have to be satisfied with blood.  "Le Doux!" I heard someone call out from below. I scanned the parking lot and found Noah holding up his finger at me. Noah graduated last year while I was still in my Senior year. "I got something for you!" "What is it?" I replied softly. His super-hearing was able to catch it. "My homemade cookies," he grinned. "Your mom told me that-" I waved my hands furiously. Telling him to shut his mouth. He wasn't aware of Orion sitting no too far away from me. Noah stared at me curiously and waved a Ziploc bag with his cookies. "Catch!" He threw the bag to me at full speed. I caught it with my right arm before it touched the ground. "Thanks, b***h!" "Emily Le Doux," he raised his eyebrows. "What did I tell you about cursing?" "Shouldn't you be in class?" I smile slyly. Something flashed in his eyes.  "Emily," he warned. "If you don't want me calling your mom to inform her that her baby boy is skipping then I suggest you leave" "Harsh," he winced and drove off.  With my feet dangling off the rooftop, I munched on the cookies. I felt the movement of Orion's breath as he spoke. "Who was he?" "Noah," I surprised myself by answering. "Freshman in College." "Who is he to you?" "Wouldn't you like to know," I sighed and realized that I ate the last of the cookies. Orion made a low sound as his feet shuffled behind me. His lips gently brushed my ear and he blew hot air onto my neck.  "I would like to know," he whispered roughly. "He's like a brother to me," I said shakily. A lump rose in my throat and I couldn't swallow it when Orion moved away.  "Good," he breathed and focussed on his shoes. "Are you the volleyball captain?" "Yeah" "Tryouts are today, correct?" "Mhm." "My...I have friends and their girlfriends are trying out." My eyes harden instantly and I feel my walls go up. "You mean the Alpha-Females?" He seems to notice my harsh tone because he matches it. "Yes." I stand up immediately and face him. He towers above me by a lot and he's absolutely breathtaking. His green eyes darkened over as I glanced at his lips. I bit my lip for some self-restraint. "You know that I never go easy on any of the newbies." "I wasn't asking you to go easy on them," his voice was coarse and he took a step closer to me. I swallow harshly and lick my lips. His eyes darken the shade of the ocean but I saw his eyes flicker to my fangs. It was a clear statement. He blinked various times but I turned away from him. "Emily-" His voice saying my name was so hypnotizing.  "I have to go," I say. "Will you be at tryouts?" "My friends and I will be there." "Who are your friends?" "Isaac, Ivan, Caleb, and my brother Conrad." "I assume that they're are the Alpha-Females mates?" "How did you-" "The marks on their necks are not hard to miss," I told him.  "You stare at their necks?" I frowned. He probably thought that I was bloodthirsty and looking for prey. "Not for the reasons your thinking." "I wasn't-" "You were," I shrugged. "I'm used to it." The bell rang, signalling the end of lunch. We stood there for a couple of seconds until I broke the ice. "I'll you at tryouts then." "You can count on it." ***
