Chapter 27Last Monday, Mona, Spencer’s mother, agreed to allow Nick to make up for lost time with his son.
To my surprise, Nick took five consecutive days off, which he’d never done before, and we spent those days together.
Spencer was a whimsical child and I enjoyed his personality very much, but the first night we spent together, hidden away in Nick’s newly furnished loft, was quite a challenge.
I’d never been around toddlers. I knew nothing of their species. After ten hours in Spencer’s company, I’d run out of clean clothes and had used my inhaler twice. My nerves were so raw, I could almost hear the muted television across the street.
Thankfully, Nick’s years of watching over Lene had taught him the basics of child care. During Spencer’s short stay, Nick and I ran the house like a
