Our mother had taken us to one of the modern-looking shops in the center of town and the ride there only took 2 minutes in that contraption my mother drove, or shall I say flew, and when I got out of the car my legs felt like Jell-O.
“Mom, you should have prepared us for that,” I said, as I struggled to walk.
“How long will it take for my legs to work?” Hiro asked.
“You’ll get used to it. Come on, let’s go shopping for this party tonight,” my mother said, as she led us into the large building. While some of the clothes were weird, we did find those beautiful dresses that we thought would be perfect for the party. After about two hours of shopping, my mother took us to the district that reminded me of little Tokyo minus the kimonos. As we explored the place, I walked away from my family who were looking at jewelry, and stumbled upon a man in a mask performing magic in front of a group of people. Without a second thought, I walked towards him, mesmerized by his use of water magic. First, he created a bird that flew around this little girl’s head. Then he created a small cyclone in the shape of an arch and suddenly water in the shape of birds came flying out of it. It was the coolest thing I’d ever seen.
“OK, now it’s time for our last trick,” a second person in a mask said. The next thing I knew, a large water dragon was circling us. Everyone applauded, and then the fire started to swirl around the dragon as it traveled around us.
I thought it was amazing until I heard a voice say, get out of there, you’re in danger. At first, I looked around, but after not finding the voice, decided to go rejoin my family who were a few feet away, still at the stand. That’s when the dragon came towards me. Slowly, I backed away from it, as the voice from earlier screamed at me to run, and that’s what I did. Unfortunately, there was nowhere for me to run, the water and fire had swirled around me like a cage, leaving me no way to escape.
“Stop,” I screamed. “Stop it,” I repeated, but it didn’t, instead the water and fire started closing in on me and what appeared to be a figure with a terrifying smile came out of it. My heart was racing a mile a minute. My palms were sweating, and I was crying, and at that moment I knew I was going to die. On instinct, I dropped to my knees, my hands over my ears, and I was hoping someone would save me. Just as I thought it was all over for me, the magic dispersed, and I allowed myself to fall on the floor.
“Are you OK?” I heard a voice that sounded like my ex-Malik, ask. I then looked up and saw Malik staring back at me with a look of concern on his handsome face. He was about Hiro’s height and build, and his eyes were a hypnotic brown. He had a chiseled jawline and dimples that appeared every time he smiled, and his hair had grown out a bit since the last time I saw him if I was seeing him at all.
“Kayla,” I heard my mother’s voice call. Her voice was also full of concern.
“Are you OK?” Malik asked.
“What are you doing here?” I asked, overcome with emotion.
“We’ll worry about that later. Hiro, Hana get Kayla in the car,” my mother ordered. She then looked at the fairies who had performed the magic, “What the hell is your problem? You could have killed her,” she said sternly. Hiro picked me up and carried me to the car. If this was any other situation I would have welcomed it, but considering what had happened, I couldn’t bring myself to be happy.
“I don’t know what happened. It went out of control, it’s never done that,” one of the men said in shock, and I could tell they did it.
“You better hope the authorities come to that same conclusion," she said, just as guards arrested the men. I sat in the backseat with my head on Hiro’s shoulder. This was the closest I had been to him in a year and, despite everything, I desperately needed it. My attention then shifted towards Malik who, after saving me, looked back at the car before flying away, and I knew I was hallucinating.
“Was that Malik?” Hana asked.
“Who cares?” Hiro said. He then looked at me and asked, “Are you OK? What the hell happened back there anyway?” his voice was full of concern and hostility, with the latter seeming more geared towards the incident than me.
“I don’t know. I was watching them perform, then it appeared out of nowhere.” I said through tears.
“The audacity,” my mother said, as she got in the car and slammed the door. “Are you OK Mija?” my mother asked.
I nodded. She then started the car and a moment later we were back at the house. The first person to greet us was my stepfather, who seemed happy until he saw me leaning on Hiro. “What happened?” he asked, concerned.
“Some asshole's magic went out of control. She almost died,” my mother said through tears.
“Are you OK? Hiro, why are you holding her, put her down,” My stepfather ordered.
Hiro looked at my mother, who looked at me and asked with tears in her eyes, “Can you walk?”
“Si mama, pero puedo ir a acostarme creo que necesito una siesta,” I asked. I didn’t really think a nap would help, but I hoped it would.
“Ok. Hiro, take her to her room,” she said, and Hiro carried me into the house. My hands were around his neck and while I tried not to, I still ended up stiffing him, basking in his scent. The walk to my new room from the car was short, but those few minutes in his arms again were amazing, and I hated myself for remembering it.
“Are you sure you’re OK?” Hiro asked as he placed me on my bed.
“Not really, but I should be fine after I get some sleep. Please have my mom or Hana wake me for the party tonight,” I asked.
“I will,” Hiro said. He then walked out of the room and I fell backward on my bed.
