I stood behind the glass staring down at him as he sat with Detective Nelson.
Anderson and Dad stood beside me watching him carefully.
"I just heard the scream and ran down to see he was bleeding out with a knife in his chest." Ace said for the hundredth time in the last two hours.
It took them four hours to get him, he had to be tased because he was fighting and continuously resisting.
I leaned into the frame and watched him say it so exhausted. "He's not lying." I said softly.
Anderson stared over at me, "You said you saw him in his room when you heard the scream, but that's not enough of an alibi Katie." He said sighing.
Dad furrowed his eyebrows, "I believe you Katie, but it doesn't look good that they just got in a big fight and now Mr. Miller is dead." He said shaking his head.
I nodded I'm understanding, "That and he ran." Anderson added sighing.
Wonderful.
What can I say? I always knew he'd wound up incarcerated, and I guess I want him to learn a little punishment but this isn't right. After all, I know he's innocent.
I don't like the guy, but I also don't like injustice.
Pushing off the frame I sighed, "Well while everyone'd focused on him possibly being the murderer, no ones going to even try to see if they can find the actual killer?" I asked confused.
Dad eyed Anderson and I watched him stare back at me, "You said both doors were unlocked right?" He asked.
I nodded, "I think they came in and did it, then left when they heard Ace was home." I said thinking like a cop.
He ran his hand over his face, "I need a coffee." He yawned and headed out the room with Anderson.
The detective got up and headed out the room staring over at me, "He's not budging." She said bored.
Looking from Ace to her, I nodded, "Because he's telling the truth." I said softly going inside the room.
Aces POV:
She walked in wearing a jacket and her pajama shorts, she's got killer legs.
I should be mourning my fathers death, right? Something like that at least, I didn't hate the guy, I pitied him.
Hopefully now he's in a better place, a better mindset.
Katie sat across from me and kept a very strong and focused stare on my face.
I stared up at the glass window, was she there that whole time?
She leaned back and crossed her arms over her chest.
This girl doesn't even know how much being a cop would fit her. The girls born to be one, I can see it.
Katie opened her mouth to talk but then closed it and thought for a second, "Why did you run?" She asked looking at me like I was an i***t.
I ran because I knew they'd think I did it.
I'm not really the type of guy you cuff and then let go.
Yet here I am, and surprisingly, I'm not dead. I would've figured after I fought and resisted they'd shoot. Something tells me she had something to do with that.
I watched her and shrugged, "I figured they'd blame me anyways. At least that way I could have a chance of getting away." I said honestly.
She dropped her big brown eyes to the table and leaned forward moving her eyes to me, "You had an alibi." She said quietly.
An alibi?
A small scowl came to her face, "I watched you undress before we both heard the scream. I saw you sprint out of the room to him. You couldn't have killed him if you were in your room." She said even quieter.
She was watching me?
I stared at her lips before looking up at the window, she reached over and placed her hand under my chin gripping it and pulling my face back to hers, "Never run unless you're guilty." She said scolding me, "You mine as well have killed him now." She said softly before letting go of my face and standing walking out the room.
My eyes wandered all over her body, admiring the way she just took absolute control.
That was a Katie I hadn't known existed.
I'm shocked, turned on and embarrassed all in one.
I don't think I've ever had all three together.
After being taken to a cell, I laid down on the bed I was so used to and waited to get an attorney.
This was going to be one hell of a f*****g ride.
"Get up." The sheriff said as he walked in and cuffed my hands back up.
I eyed him over in confusion and he leaned down talking quietly, "I managed to get you a real lucky deal. Katie says you're innocent and I trust my daughter." He began and I realized whatever this is, I have Katie to thank.
He sat me in a chair, "You have a choice. We continue with this investigation and you end up losing which is where this is going with your record and history, plus your finger prints are all over the knife." He said sighing.
Shit.
"Or you stay in my home, under house arrest for six months. This choice doesn't come with a r****d, you pick your fate kid. I'm not picking it for you." He said catching me off guard.
Did he say his home? "Why your home?" I asked not meaning to sound like an ungrateful d**k.
He eyed me over, "Your home belongs to the government in about a week. Can't really stay on house arrest when you don't have a home, can you?" He asked me smart ass-like.
I earned that.
The sherif has both hands on his belt like Katie does, and I nodded, "I'll do house arrest." I said sighing.
He gripped my forearm and pulled me up walking me out to the front.
I guess I'm really stuck doing this.
It can't be that bad.
After all, I'll be under the same roof as Katie.
This should be good.
As we drove to the house, I watched him continuously eye me over before he pulled the car over and parked.
Officer Anderson pulled his car over to the side behind him and I watched Katie's dad turn and stare back at me. "I'm doing you a huge favor by allowing you to stay under my roof. I don't deal with misfits, I refuse to shelter anyone with bad intentions toward my daughter either." He scowled.
Is he threatening me to stay away from Katie?
I nodded, "I just want to finish this sentencing so I can get the f**k out of this town." I responded honestly.
He sighed, "I need your word." He said gripping the steering wheel.
Confused, I watched him for a while, "My word that I won't cause trouble?" I asked grinning lightly.
The Sheriff scowled, "That you won't sleep with my daughter or try anything with her." He started getting antsy, "Don't f**k my daughter." He said bluntly.
Oh, right. Well I'm definitely going to do that.
Giving him a nod, I smiled softly "Don't worry, she's not my type Sir. Like I said, I'm just trying to get the f**k out of the shitty town." I responded.
He stared at me for a while before we went back on our drive to the house.
Like a f*****g fox in a hen coup.
This should be fun.
