Ch.1 Marqx
Lilli Pov
I plaster on my best friendly smile and clack on the keyboard of the overly aged computer.
"Well, it looks like we're all set, your book will be due back in two weeks time unless you call for a renewal."
The kind old lady who practically comes in everyday smiles gingerly and gathers up her book and awkwardly large purse.
"Thank you, Lilli. It's always a pleasure."
I nod and soften my eyes slightly. Mrs. Crest knows exactly who I am, but it never bothered her, or stopped her from making rather brass jokes on occasion.
Once the line of patrons has dwindled I turn my attention to the book drop. Luckily not many people's books were due today so it wasn't overflowing like normal. I bring the few piles over to the desk and sit while hand checking them in and sorting them into sections for easy return.
My co-worker Matilde sits a few feet away calling patrons with late fees. Matilde is an older woman, originally from New York. She's crass and has a sharp tongue when it counts, which makes collection calls her bread and butter.
"Mr.Mikorr threatened to come over here with a knife and I told him your name. He became immediately content with paying."
I shake my head with a sardonic chuckle.
"Matilde you need to stop threatening people with my surname, I don't openly practice the ways of many others sharing my bloodline. What would happen if one of them came in here?"
She gives me a cheeky smirk.
"It will make you acknowledge who you are for once Lilli."
I roll my eyes and return to the newly forming line of patrons.
After the line has once again emptied I push my book cart out into the stacks and proceed with returning the novels to their assigned locations.
While fixing a particularly out of order section I over hear some college girls gossiping.
"Hey, did you hear Don Marqx is in town. Someone said him and his men are trying to lie low for a while so they left Chicago and came here."
"Come on, this place in vanilla as Hell, there is no way the a Chicago mob boss would show up in this little dinky ass town. You need to stop reading those slutty novels."
I giggle silently and continue on with fixing the shelves and running the returns.
When I return to my desk, my curiosity sparks me into action. I pull up the search engine and type in "Don Marqx".
The first picture to show up is his mug shot he is a strikingly muscular man with caramel blonde hair, that's slicked back with a few rogues pieces that hang over his forehead. He has a few indistinguishable neck tattoos. The measurements beside his head clearly dictate he stands at 6 foot 6 inches. He has entrapping hazel eyes, that make me somewhat weak in the knees.
His full name is, Hades Marqx. I understand why that girl was so enamoured with the thought of him being here. No one in this town even remotely resembles him, every centimeter of this man screams he's one massive red flag.
I return to my work at hand and mindlessly finish up my routine activities. We are just about to close up, just checking out the last few patrons when everyone's attention is drawn to the door.
My breath catches in my throat and the scene slows down in my head like a movie.
Hades Marqx strides confidently into the library, He keeps his gaze on the ground as he moves his way to the far end of the counter and smacks his hand demandingly on the wood that would now be terrified if it was sentient.
Matilde quickly shoves me out of my chair and looks up at me.
"You can take care of that one Lilli."
I give her a very defined death glare. She responds by positioning her fingers as a cross in front of me.
I roll my eyes and dramatically drop my head backward.
I straighten my posture and bolster my confidence before plodding my way over to Mr. Marqx.
I bite my lip while looking over his tight black shirt that defines his every sculpted muscle and his black slacks that also are tight enough to not leave much to the imagination.
I attempt to temper my cheeks burning before I stand before him and look up into his entrancing stormy green gaze.
I absentmindedly twirl the ends of my ebony hair and he offers a hint of a smirk.
"How can I help you today, Do you know what your looking for?"
His eyes look up and down my body, resting on my cleavage before meeting my gaze.
He slides a toothpick in his mouth and arches his eye brow.
"Well I thought I did, but I may have found something quite better. Why's your name, little girl?"
I stumble backwards slightly, rubbing my legs together to hopefully decrease the burning in my lower stomach.
"My name is Lillith, but everyone calls me Lilli."
He lifts my hand, that I honestly hadn't even noticed I placed on the counter. He spits his toothpick in the trash beside the large piece of furniture dividing us and presses his warm lips to my now searingly hot knuckles.
"My name is Hades, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance Lilli."
Sweet shivers cascade down my spine at his touch and I loose my mind for a moment.
"Yes, of course. Now, are you interested in checking anything out?"
He returns my hand to the counter and his smirk returns, lingering slightly longer his time.
His eyes fall back to my chest and I subconsciously grab a book and cover my cleavage with it.
He chuckles deeply and returns his eyes to mine.
"Do you have any Oscar Wilde?"
My brain derails slightly, more than minorly surprised by his reading preference.
"Umm, yes, fourth shelf from the end."
He stretches his rippling arm behind his head and scratches the back of his neck, making me inadvertently lick at my lower lip, which he doesn't fail to notice. His eyes darken while watching my reaction to him.
"You see Lilli, I'm quite hopeless when it comes to directions. Would you mind leading me, I hate to be a bother."
