(MARILYN’S POV)
“Marilyn! Language!” Jenna said to her daughter with gritted teeth as she cast a look around quickly. And then an apologetic smile to Lilliana and I.
Her daughter on the other hand did not look like she had even heard a word her mother had said. She was looking at me with those doll eyes so wide open in shock. She was surprised to see me then. So I guess she was just getting to know who I was. She was very surprised. Or would I say horrified.
I was not surprised. I knew already and I noticed her the moment she came in. She made me have more glasses of drinks because I was anxious of her being here, she was giving me flashes of the night we spent. I know that I should not be thinking of that but I could not stop myself.
And also, here I was standing with my fiancée so guess how shifty that looks like. Very shitty!”
I know, I know what you guys are thinking, how could I cheat on my fiancée? How could I just sleep with someone when I am engaged? Well, that is a very complicated story for another day. The story of how I got to the bar in the first place but for now I shall have to make it through dinner.
“It’s so nice to meet you:” the words went around us with me trying my best to avoid her eyes because that seemed to make it all worse. I was barely making a sentence and soon I was moving away as I made it in a breeze..
When we were finally gathered around the dining table with the food on it, I could not help but keep stealing glances at her. A couple of times , our eyes met and she narrowed her eyes in a way that showed she was not pleased.
“Are you okay?” Lillian whispered as she leaned towards me. We were seated beside each other.
I caught the young woman looking at me from across the table again.
I nodded to Lilliana indicating that I’m okay. But she did not look satisfied.
“Is this about me?” She asked with her eyes looking at me sadly.
I sighed. “Can we not talk about this now?” I said to her with a low but stern voiced whisper. She looked hurt and then she looked away giving a fake smile to the table.
Liam stood to his feet. He had his glass of wine and I knew he was going to give a roast. It was a relief to have Liam so absorbed by the presence of Jenna that he did not even notice how tense I was at dinner.
“I feel happy and I feel fulfilled. Being surrounded by the people I love.” He was saying.
I stole a glance at the young woman and she was looking at me too. I took my eyes away quickly. Damn this rubbish! I am not one to act in such a clumsy way but I don’t know what is happening to me.
How can I just be fidgeting so much? And even stealing glances?
“So here is to this new family. To the two unions. May we be blessed and happy.” He said and then with a raise of his glass of wine, he added, “Now here is to us.”
“To us.” Everyone chorused.
Then he sat back down and took the hand of Jenna. They both went back to talking deeply to each other. Lilliana was engrossed in her phone and again I tried to steal a glance and there she was looking at me.
“I need to get a drink.” I said to Lilliana and she shrugged at me distracted by whatever she was watching.
I left for the kitchen and pulled out a stool which I sat on. It was quiet in here. Hopefully I could pass some time here before heading to my room? But I promised Liam that I would try my best to spend more time at dinner than I usually would. So I owed it to him to not leave early.
“Knock! Knock!” A soft voice interrupted my thoughts and I turned to see who other than her walk in. She did not look happy at all
(MARILYN’S POV)
Well? Are things not f****d up enough for me already? Why do I have to deal with this? Why on earth did he really have to be Liam’s brother? What the hell was he doing in that bar when he is engaged? Engaged ! That makes this all even way worse. He is engaged and yet he had the nerve……
Sitting at the table with him there was very hard. I had hot flashes of the night we spent whenever iur eyes jammed and that sent an electrifying feeling down my spine. But then I was also angry.
He was engaged to this Lillian girl? She is very pretty and I have to give her that. Tall and nice body, she looks like a model. There was a stab of jealousy each time I acknowledge it all. This was never expected. It’s a good thing mum was so immersed in her conversation with Liam that she did not even notice how tensed and clumsy I was.
Immediately the cowboy left the dining room for a break, I gave a quick look around the table and stole our realizing no one would seem to notice our absence. Not even the pretty fiancée. She was so in to her phone that she may have forgotten she was in a dining room. My instincts told me to check the kitchen first and there he was. He was seated with his head in his hands.
He raised his head up after I announced my presence. He was surprised to see me and then his expression became unreadable. Just like always. Cold eyes that looked dark and emotionless.
I opened my mouth to scold him about the fact that he was engaged but then I heard mum calling for me and I sighed with a groan . Then I turned back to him.
“We have to talk.” I told him looking him straight in the eye.
“Yes.” He agreed with a gruff tone.
“After dinner…” I said
I looked at him expectantly. He would know the better place for us to meet since he lives here.
“Yeah. Meet me here when everyone has gone upstairs. “ He said to me and with that he walked past me.
“Okay.” I agreed
I know that he had been smelly earlier but now as he walked past, I took in his scent and it threw me off guard making my legs jittery and giving me short breaths as I was thrown in to a flashback of the hot night we had.
“See you.” He said walking away and I tried to get myself together before following him out and back to the dining room.
