Chapter 3: The Strain of Silence
Mira’s phone buzzed again, and this time she picked it up. It was a message from Sarah, her closest friend from college.
"Hey, just wanted to check in on you. I know it’s been a while, but I’m here if you want to talk. I miss you."
Mira stared at the message for a long time, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. She could respond, tell Sarah that she was fine, that everything was okay. But that would be a lie. So, she didn’t respond. She couldn’t bring herself to.
It had been so long since she’d felt like herself, or at least, like the person she wanted to be. She didn’t want to burden anyone with her feelings. What could they do? How could they understand when she didn’t even know how to understand herself?
Her mind was a constant fog of confusion. Every time she tried to explain what was happening inside of her, it felt like the words were trapped in her throat, unwilling to come out. She didn’t know how to ask for help. She didn’t even know if she wanted help. What was the point?
The rain continued its steady patter against the window, a rhythm that Mira found strangely comforting. It was the only thing in her life that hadn’t changed, that hadn’t abandoned her.
