Chapter Nine •ADRIAN• I smirked as I watched Brianna step out of my office. She had no idea what was waiting for her if she walked out of the building. A few moments after she stepped out, Manuel marched into my office. With the look on his face, I figured he saw Brianna on his way here. “Wasn’t that the iron lady from the restaurant? The one that kicked your d**k?” He mused. “Yeah, she’s the one. I decided to hire her so that I could punish her for what she did to me. And she’s already suffering for it.” I replied. “When I saw her, she was mumbling something like, ‘If not for the fact that I needed the money from this godforsaken job, I would have beat up his ass’. She looked so angry when she said that. She didn’t even notice I was in the elevator with her.” Manuel said, and I snickered. “I guess whatever you sent her to do must have made her mad.” “She must be crazy if she thought she could beat me up; she’s working under me, so she’ll have to do anything I tell her to,” I said with a wicked grin on my face. “Well, that is not what I came here for.” He said dismissively. “Will you be chanced to hit the club tonight?” “No, I won’t. I will be busy with some important stuff.” I responded and went back to typing on my laptop. “I know you won’t be busy with anything. You just don’t want to hang out with me.” He said, whining like a kid. “Is this because you have gotten a new best friend, and you are tired of hanging out with me? Is that it?” “Bro, quit acting like a kid. You are a grown-ass man. But seriously, I would be busy with an online meeting with some investors outside the state.” I replied calmly. “And I don’t have another friend besides you. I can’t handle another person with the same level of immaturity as you; if I do, I’d die an untimely death.” “Can’t you postpone the meeting to tomorrow or another day, please? I promise there will be lots of fun and gorgeous ladies. It is the most popular club in town these days, and it’s been so long since we properly hung out and had drinks together.” He stated. “Fine, I’ll think about it,” I groaned out a reply. “Whenever you say that you will think about something, it means that you won’t do that thing, and I know that you’re just saying this to get me off your back. Just say yes, please? I promise you’ll enjoy it.” He said, looking at me with puppy dog eyes and a pout, making his face look horrible. “Goddammit, I’ll go with you! Anything to stop you from looking at me with that face.” I grumbled, reluctantly agreeing since he wouldn’t rest till I promised to go with him. Besides, I needed to take a break from work to have a fun night with drinks and hot ladies, even if it was just a few hours. “Woohoo! I promise you won’t regret agreeing to this. I heard it is a very fun club.” He said, grinning from ear to ear. “I just hope I won’t regret doing this. I will schedule the meeting for another day.” I said with a sigh. “You won’t!” He stated. Suddenly, his phone pinged, and he checked to see what it was. “I’ve gotta go. I’ll see you later.” He said as he stood up. “Is something wrong?” I asked, and he shook his head. “Nah, I have a meeting with some of my staff, and I forgot about it.” He said, and I chuckled because that sounded like something he would do. “So you forfeited your meeting to tell me about a club? You could have easily told me about it on the phone.” I uttered. “And it’s not like you even came to check on me.” “I felt like it would be easier to get you to follow me if I told you in person. And how will I come all the way over here to check up on you? It’s not like you’re my girlfriend or something.” He replied. “Speaking of which, when are you gonna get a girlfriend?” I asked Manuel with a serious expression on my face. “I might as well ask you the same thing.” He responded. “Oh, you know me. I’m not ready for commitment and girl problems. All I wanna do now is to make more money, f**k around some time and have fun.” I stated. “Well, I hope you change that mindset soon. I’ll get a girlfriend when you do.” He stated, and I scoffed without giving him a response. “I’ll see you tonight. Bye!” He said, walking to the door. “Yeah. See you!” I responded. •BRIANNA• Immediately, I stepped out of the building, flagged down the first cab I saw, and I entered. “Where are you going, miss?” The cab driver asked. “I don’t really know, sir, but this is the address given to me,” I replied and showed him the paper on which the address was written. “This place is quite far, miss. It’s going to cost you some more dollars than usual.” He stated. “Just take me there, sir; I’ll pay any amount. I’m already running late.” I responded tiredly, and he bobbed his head. He ignited the car’s engine and sped off into the road. I kept mumbling incoherent words, wishing I hadn’t been sent on this dumb errand to his house. After driving for about twenty minutes, the car suddenly jerked forward and stopped. I stared at the back of the driver’s head worriedly, wondering what happened to the car. As if reading my mind, the driver turned his head to look at me and said, “I went to the automobile repair shop this morning to check if anything was wrong with the car, and they said it was in good condition. I don’t know what’s wrong with it.” “Well, what are you doing sitting there? Check what is wrong with it.” I snapped rudely; I didn’t care if I sounded rude. I don’t want to lose my job because I got back to the office late. The driver got out of the car and walked over to the front. He opened the hood, checked some things in it, and sighed. He returned to the car, and I asked him what was wrong with it. “The car radiator is overheated, so the radiator is damaged.” He said. “What are we going to do now? I don’t even know where the place I’m going is located.” I ranted. “There is nothing I can do unless you can wait till the repairman comes because I’m going to call him now.” He replied, already pulling out his phone from his pants pocket. “Well, I can’t wait till the repairman comes. I’m running late already.” I said to him, getting out of the car. “Will you collect the money for the fifteen minutes?” I questioned, rummaging through my purse for the money Mr. Adrian had thrown at me earlier in his office. “No need for that. I didn’t even take you to your destination, so there is no reason for me to collect money from you.” He said kindly. “At least take this from me. You used money to fill gas into your car at the gas station, and I’m pretty sure you have people at home waiting for you at home to come back and feed them. So take this.” I stated, handing a few dollar notes to him. “Thanks for this, miss. May God be with you.” He thanked me. “No problem,” I replied. I turned towards the direction the car was going before it broke down. I walked for minutes, thinking I could find another cab, but the road was void of cars. No single soul was walking on the road, and the thought of it was freaking me out. I continued wandering for minutes before I came out to a busy road. Different cars were driving by, and I kept trying to flag down a cab when I saw one, but they kept ignoring me till a flashy black SUV stopped in front of me. I tried walking away, thinking that maybe the driver of the car got the wrong person, but before I could even take a step, the person wind down the window of the vehicle and his head popped out. “Hey! What’s a beautiful lady like you doing under this scorching sun? It’ll burn your beautiful skin.” He called out. I ignored him and kept walking, but he continued following me. “Hop in, my lady; I can take you wherever you go,” He said. When I heard what he said, I thought about it. I might as well go in his car because I was late and couldn’t keep walking without knowing where I was going; I might get lost. I turned back to the car and got in. He looked at me as I settled down in the passenger seat. “So, what were you doing walking alone on such a hot day?” He asked. “My boss sent me on an errand, and the cab I took broke down on the road. I don’t even know where I’m going.” I replied. “Didn’t he give you an address or something?” He questioned. “He gave me, but I don’t know where it is,” I answered. “Let me have a look at it.” He said, and I gave him the paper. He looked at it and smiled. “Well, you’re in luck. I’m also going somewhere around this area, so I have no problem taking you there.” He stated. “Thank you,” I mumbled. “You haven’t told me your name yet,” He said. “I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours,” I replied. “My name is Carlos.” He said, looking at me. “Brianna,” I told him. I wasn’t in the mood to talk, and I wished we got there immediately. I can’t even imagine how Mr. Adrian would react if I got back to the office so late that the meeting would be postponed.
