It was not surprising that Lavina enjoyed reading, because the Vicarage was full of books. Her father, who was the younger son of Lord Vernon, had managed to explore a great deal of the world before he had settled down with a wife. His father had intended to give him a Parish that was a part of his estate, but unfortunately Lord Vernon died while his son was abroad and the new heir sold the house and its surroundings.
