Chapter 10: When Helena woke, it was still night. She stumbled to her basin to wash her face. The near full moon hung high in the night’s sky. It must be close to dawn, she felt like it should be close to dawn. Her stomach growled. Needing something to eat, she knew the galley would be her best bet. A quick pause to look in the mirror stopped her dead in her tracks. Looking back from the mirror was the face of an old crone, complete with a massive, hairy wart at the end of her nose and deep-set wrinkles marking her face. The back of her hands were covered with liver spots and blue veins. It only took a second to confirm they didn’t look that way outside the reflection.
