The Big Bad Wolf

Derrick's POV " Tell me that you were able to get a trace on that call," I said to West. " Yes, sir, I was able to pinpoint her location," he said and gave me his iPad. "Manhattan? What the hell is she doing in New York?" I said to West. After a lot of talking and threats, my mother finally told me what she knew about Chloe, including her new numbers. I called one of my clients and told him that I needed a trace on a secured burner phone. He didn't waste any time getting it to me; lucky for me, West is a computer genius; he was able to figure things out in just minutes; I just had to keep her on the phone for ten seconds. I love my wife, and I don't want a life without her. I will do anything to get her back. I know what she said on the phone, and I didn't take it personally. She thought that she could trap me, but I showed her that she was no match for me. I was able to flip things on her; whatever information she had on me would only get her into trouble with the law, and she could be away for a very long time. She also knows that I can make it all disappear. I will say this: she thought that she was smart, but her mistake was telling about her evidence and not using it at the same time; she gave me a lot of time to clean up the shop and more than enough time to set her up. She gave me that idea. This is all on her. " Son, this has gone far enough. Let me go," my mother said to me. " Why? So that you can run to her and tell her about my plans? I don't think so; I am going to be keeping my eyes on you, mother, always," I said to her. " Derrick, I have already told you everything I know. What more do you want from me?" She said to me. " No, Mother, you still haven't told me why I helped her. Don't tell me that it was because I was putting my hands on her, which I regret every day, but it can't be that, Mother. If it were, you would have helped her to leave me a long time ago. I saw the way you looked at me every time you saw a bruise on her; that is not why you helped her; tell me the truth, and I will let you go," I said to her. " Derrick, I am your mother. You can't treat me like a prisoner, like how your father treated me," She said to me. " I protected you! I ended it all!" I said to her. My father was a monster. He beat her up all the time! When I was old enough to do something about it, I did it. I protected her, I did that for her, and she lies to me? Why would she lie to me? I know my mother; I know when she is not telling me something, everything in me is telling me that she is keeping something from me; whatever it is, it must be big; I want to know what it is. " At what cost? Look at what it has turned you into. You hated your father so much that you became him without even knowing it. You landed her in the hospital, son; what if you had a child? Would you also treat your child that way? " She said to me. She is wrong, I am nothing like that man. I admit it: I have anger issues, but they don't last long. I don't know why, but sometimes I get so angry that I do things without thinking. I love Chloe, I never meant to hurt her. She speaks about children, I have always wanted to have children, but Chloe wasn't ready. She wouldn't go off her pill. I just figured that she didn't want kids, but if we had kids, I would never put my hands on my child, I am not a monster. " Never! I would never hurt my child! I would never let my child be afraid of me the way I was afraid of that man. My child would not be like me!" I said to her. " So says the man who's keeping his mother hostage in this old and dingy place. I need a bath, a hot meal, I need my bed," she said to me. " I'll think about that," I said and went to the table where West was busy on the computer. " West, tell me that we have an address," I said to him. " Unfortunately, we don't; her phone had an encryption; we can only track her exact location using her phone networks, and right now, her phone looks to be offline; it won't even give me the last location," he said to me. " What does that mean "?" I asked him. " It means that wherever she is, sir, it is protected; the network there has its own VPN router, its own private connection, nothing can be tracked, nothing can be hacked; I've never seen anything like this," he said and took a deep breath. " My wife isn't capable of doing all of this; she's a suburban housewife, and she spends her days at the beauty parlor, online shopping for clothes; she is not some secret spy agent!" I said to him. I looked at my mother, I saw a smug look on her face, looking at me like she wanted to say something. " What is it, Mother? You look like you have something to say," I said to her. " Do you know why you haven't been able to find her yet?" she said to me. " No, mother, but I guess that you are going to tell me," I said to her. " It is because you have underestimated her so much that you forgot the reason you fell in love with her in the first place. When you first told me that you loved her, you couldn't stop talking about how smart she was; she graduated top of the class and got a job in one of the most prestigious companies in the city. A job she gave up for you, Chloe is an intelligent woman, and until you see that, you will always be one step behind, right now you don't see her as a threat, but you have no idea what a woman would do to protect the people she loves," she said to me. " Who is she trying to protect? Her mother? I don't care about that woman!" I said to her. " Like I said, if you keep underestimating Chloe, you won't find her," she said to me. " I know that she's in Manhattan. It's only a matter of time till I find her," I said to her. " Then why are you keeping me here? I have nothing left to tell you," she said to me. " You might not, but Tessa might, maybe I should bring her in as well, make it a reunion," I said to her. " Stop it, Derrick! You have gone too far! Chloe left you because of this! If I were, I wouldn't want to come back to you either; you need help! Professional help!" she said to me. " Thread carefully, Mother; this might not end well for you if you keep pushing me like you do," I said to her. " Sir, we are going to be late," West said to me. " You're right, I'll go ahead, take my mother back to my house, the cottage, I want eyes on her at all times," I said and looked at my mother. " You see, I'm not the monster you think I am," I said to her. I got out of the warehouse and went to my car, my driver was waiting for me there. " Take me to the hangar," I said to him. " Yes, sir," he said and drove me to the hanger. In the meantime, I kept thinking about what my mother said. What if I had a child with Chloe? Would I turn into my father? She told me that I should get professional help; we both know that I can't do that; we both know that I can't sit and talk to a therapist about this. I committed a huge crime when I was still a young boy. I killed my father and made it look like an accident. The man was a monster, a powerful politician with power, a man with connections. My mother was trapped in that life because of me, I had to be the one to get her out of it. That is how we ended up in the States. We took the inheritance and started a new life here. I guess my mother thought that I would forget, but how do I forget something like that? Still, that doesn't mean that I am like my father; what did he have to go to to end up like that? What made him the monster that he was? For my mother to compare me to that man cuts me deep. I arrived at the hangar and found Lilly waiting for me there. She smiled when she saw me coming out of the car. As always, she looked great, and so did her husband, the most powerful man in LA, the head of the LA Mafia family. He is one of my biggest clients; my law firm is doing so well because of all the business he gives to me; not only do I represent him in court, but I advise and clean his money, and in return, he pays me an insane amount of money. We have been working together for the last four years. This man made me the lawyer I am today. Now, he is not just my client, but I see him as my brother as well. " Derrick, I thought you weren't going to show up," Pier said to me. " And miss our weekly catch-up, never," I said and sat at the table. This meeting is off the books; that is why we are holding it in his hangar and not my office or his. " What's up? What do you need?" I said to him. He went under the table and put a large duffel bag on the table. "There's twenty million in there; I need you to clean it for me; of course, you will get your twenty-five percent as usual," he said to me. " Consider it done," I said with a smile, I took the bag off the table. " So tell me, my friend, have you found her? You know I can help you, right?" he said to me. I know that he can help me find her, but then I would have to owe him a favor; Chloe doesn't have any contacts, and she can't get away from me for too long; it's only a matter of time till I find her. " I know, it's fine, I know where she is," I said to her. " That's good to hear," he said to me. " So tell me, friend, how are your plans with New York coming along?" I asked him. " It's coming together. They won't know what hit them," he said to me. " That's good," I said and smiled at him.
