"Will you get out of the way!" someone shoved me forward, and I fell on the sidewalk. I shook my head and remembered I was walking to work, I was having one of my episodes. I've had this problem sense I was a little girl, the doctor said it was a defense mechanism. I guess what happened to my father took a bigger toll on me then they thought.
The supernatural world came out to the humans a few years ago, and like when big new changes happen, there are those that fight it and those ready to accept it, in this case not very many people were. A war was about to break out, until the humans realized they would lose to the werewolves, witches, vampires and all the things that went bump in the night. It was called off, a council of their people was formed and they would meet with congress representing humans to kept them updated of the changes and things going on in each group. Politics at it's finest I guess, and up till now everything has moved on smoothly, my best friend was a doctor a pediatrician to be exact, and she's a witch scary right, but she loved children, and you would find some of witches as teachers, daycare works, and nurses or hospice workers. The ones you really didn't see mix there kids much are the werewolves and the vampires, they both had private schools for each kind, and some richer witches too, they would play sports and get involved with events and a lot of the humans accepted them, but there were also the ones that were speciesist toward them.
I worked in a diner with the sweets old man, he was human as far as I knew but he did have a werewolf bust boy, and cook. a couple of witches and vampire chicks that worked the night shift, I and one other were human, but as I got closer to the diner the doors were closed and there was no one inside. I knocked a few times but nothing, that was weird, I looked at my watch, Leo should've opened up by now it was six in the morning and breakfast rush would be here soon. I walked around to the back, to the back entrance, and that was unlocked, strange.
"Leo?" I called as I walked into the kitchen area, his office was right on the left, just outside of the kitchen, but I didn't need to get that far, there on the floor was Leo.
"Leo?" I ran over and touched his neck, his was cold to the touch and he had no pulse. I called 911 and soon the paramedics came and told me he had died of a heart attack last night.
"Thank you." I said when I turned I found everyone else there.
"Where were all of you this morning?" I asked looking around at them.
"I had a doctors appointment." said Bernie the cook, "I told Leo, about it a while back I thought that was why he was opening later the usual."
I turned to Jim the bust boy.
"My alarm didn't go off this morning."
They others said the same thing, none of their alarms went off, I thought it was a lame excuse, but whatever I wasn't a police officer so. I just felt bad for Leo, he had been alone when that happened to him, that was awful. We all went home after that, and that was when I let myself cry for him.
Later that day I got a call from his only daughter, who told me she appreciated what I did, and that unfortunately she had to close the diner, she was still in school and didn't have time to manage it and didn't have the energy to hire help. I understood we still got our full two weeks pay so it was too bad, but now it was just Beth who was going to be paying rent this month.
Two months ago, I had a husband, we've been married for two years, and nothing the first couple months were fine, until I realize he was a bum, he wanted to act rich but he didn't have a penny to his name, and would take my money to spend on his dates, which I later found out that he had been cheating on me three months after we got married. The asshole could definitely talk smooth and charm you out of your pants, but he couldn't work a job to save his life. Two months ago he disappeared on me, I called his phone nothing.. disconnected. I put out a police report and they didn't know where he could be, I called aunts, cousins, and even some of his "friends", but nothing I gave up a while ago, but I did file for divorce, but sense I couldn't find him it was postponed.
I moved in with Beth who had been looking for a room mate, and she had a good job, which wasn't the problem for rent, but I needed money to try and get this jerk out of my life. I was just getting the trash out, when Beth got home. She looked surprised, to see me home early.
"What happened?" she asked.I lead the way into the house, and she followed and closed the door behind us. I plopped on the sofa as did she.
"I found Leo dead this morning."
"Oh, hon, I'm sorry."
Beth and I were once enemies, we went to the same school, she had what they called their coven, they were from the same coven families, but they weren't confirmed into the coven yet, until they turned 15, but these girls walked around intimidating everyone, but they really liked picking on me for some reason, one Beth has never clarified. they were ruthless, until one day, Beth and her family were kicked out of the coven and the girls, dropped Beth from their group, then they turned their attention to Beth, I stood up for her, Why? I just knew it was right. after that we became best friends, she warned me about Jo, but I wanted to prove her wrong, but that backfired. Beth was a fierce black woman, that took s**t from no one, least of all guys, so when I told her what Jo had done, she almost cursed his balls off, I would've loved that not that he used them right any way but no.
"I need to find a new job just to get this crap, going again."
"They really didn't approve it it's been almost three months?"
"They want to hear his side of things, and of course I'll stay married to that ass for the rest of my life, if he has a say."
"I told you let me curse his balls off, but you just..."
"What's that going to do though, just get him scared but what if that makes him clam up and then."
"Ahh, whatever you do you, I'm going to shower and go to bed."
"Night!"
She was gone, to her room and in the shower.
Over the next few days, I went to look in the better paid places to get a job, I had a degree for child care, I had wanted to be a teacher for kids, kindergarden to possibly third grade, but I didn't finish with the new things going on, I loved kids, and believed that it didn't matter what species children deserved to feel loved and cared for. I wanted a family, but again I found out Jo, couldn't have kids, but according to him he wasn't the problem I was.
There were so many places but ones wanted a witch or a she wolf and others just wanted someone more qualified to do the job. One afternoon I literally ran into a man, he growled at me and I dropped my eyes, werewolf.
"I"m so sorry sir, I didn't mean to walk into you."
He looked at the direction I had been coming from then back at me.
"You a babysitter or daycare worker?"
"No, but I'm looking for a job in that field..."
"Look at me when you talk!?"
I looked up at the man, the power this man gave off was impressive even the humans were staying clear of us as we spoke. He was tall, normal build, and all so a really beautiful milk chocolate black. There werewolves definitely made a woman, stand at attention, with how gorgeous they are.
"I'm looking for a job with kids."
"Do you have recommendations, resume, or anything that shows me you're qualified?"
I had him some of my paper work I'd been carrying around, and skimmed through it. He laughed, then handed everything back.
"That's nothing."
"Hey you asked me, I was being honest, you don't have to be a jerk about it!" I shouted in his face, forgetting he was a werewolf, he then gave me a smile, and asked for my number.
"No, maybe now I don't want to work for you anymore."
He gave me a look and sighed heavily, then turned and left. I was rooted to the spot had I really missed my chance,s**t?I walked back to the house, and dropped on the couch kicking myself for my stupid mouth.
Over the next few days I kept looking and not finding anything, I was just getting ho,e with my tail between my legs when my phone rang with an unknown number. I usually didn't answer, but this time something told me to do so.
"Hello?"
"Mrs. Homes, are you still looking for work?" he voice was smooth even over the phone, but I recognized it.
"You sound nicer then you did before, what changed?"
"Like you I've been on a search for a nanny for my Alpha, if you want proof I sent you a link."
He had, it was dated for a while ago, give or take for two years.
"I'm guessing none have had the qualifications you desire."
"Right, they haven't been a right fit, especially with the children, are you interested?"
I thought about it, working for a werewolf was like working with a congress representative, with the mix of the mafia, but I needed the job.
"I need more information."
"Of course, once you get here, we can clarify on things better."
"Wait what, get where?"
"For your interview tomorrow morning at 8, and please do be on time, I will send you the address and details in text."
He did. but I was curious.
"How did you get my name and phone number I didn't give it to you?"
"I saw it on your paperwork, see you tomorrow."
He hung up, leaving me impressed.
The next morning I got up early left a note for Beth, and headed to the address I put in my phone and followed the instructions, the house was a ways out of the city, so I took my car and drove I usually took the bus or taxi, my rust bucket was just waiting to break down on me. I got to the address and I instantly felt under dressed. this place was a mansion, the gravel driveway and the big stairway up to the entrance and the big pillars in the front and with big flower gardens on both sides. I knocked on the door and was greeted by a man. He smiled at me and for some reason, I suddenly felt relaxed at that. An other werewolf.
"Hi, you must be Elizabeth, I'm Jonathan, or Jon, I'm Mr. Grants third."
"Oh, hi, um..Liz. please, you're werewolf too."
"Yup, mostly everyone in here will be werewolf."
"Gottcha ."
"Well, this way, Benjamin gets mad when you make him wait."
For some reason, this guy felt like the big brother I never had, and it felt cool. I looked around the place was big, and beautiful a woman definitely lived here, the alpha's wife has good taste of things, colors, and details, all mixing well to bring the house to life.
"This place is beautiful."
"That it is."
"The Alpha's mate must be lovely."
He stopped dead in his tracks, and turned to look at me then around.
"Don't mention his wife, at all in front of the Alpha, okay." he wasn't shouting but it felt like he wanted to, I just nodded.
We finally arrived at the office, and he asked me to wait, I did I sat down on one of the chairs outside, and waited.
(Little kid crying)
I looked around, the cries were just so sad and scared, I wanted to find the toddler, but I looked at the door making sure Jon wasn't coming out again. The toddler's cries got more desperate, so I went and looked around, until I found her, she was in a princess room, in a crib, and crying to be let down.
"Hey, baby girl, why you crying?"
"Mama..."
"You want your, mama, oh, come here."
I held out my hands to her, at first she hesitated for a minute, then came toward me, and I took her into my arms, she then looked behind me and a gave a little giggle.
"Dadda!"she squealed and squirmed in my arms, I slowly put her down, as she ran to who I could feel his eyes burning into my back, was her father, I slowly turned careful not to look him in the eyes.
If Ben had been good looking Mr. Grant was if even possible super model hot, he looked so perfect, and flawless, from his well kept hair, to his suit, and polished shoes. He was buff but not over done just right, medium height, light tan skin, and dark brown hair, with a light beard and mustache.
" Hey, sweety, you woke up?"
He was playing with his little girl, and I was just waiting for him to yell at me. Soon Jon appeared next to him, and then Mr. Grant gave his daughter over to him.
"No, wait, if she just woke up, she's going to need a diaper change, I can do it if yo don't mind, sir?"
Jon walked forward and handed me back the little girl and I quickly changed her diaper, and then put her down and she ran out of the room with Jon running behind her. I finished cleaning up and turned to look at Mr. Grant again.
"Follow me."
He turned and headed in the direction of the office. Once in there I noticed a woman, sitting in a faint set by the window, she looked just as beautiful as Mr.Grant, this must be his wife/mate.
"It's seems you know how to handle toddlers." He said in a serious tone. Still not looking at him.
"Yes, I love kids, and wanted to be a teacher."
"Why didn't you?"
"I wanted to learn everything of every kind of baby, and child, the resources just weren't there."
"Where did you work before this?"
"A diner, as a waitress."
The woman scoffed openly, but I ignored her not all of us were born with a silver spoon in our mouths. I had to laugh inwardly silver would hurt her.
"Hm, do you have any other responsibilities?"
"Sir?"
"Kids, a family, a parent?"
"No, my mother lives with her husband, and I'm an only child."
"Mrs. Homes..."
"Liz, please."
"Liz, I need a nanny and you need the job, but I don't let just anyone around my children, but in this case I will make an exception, but do know if you hurt my children, I will hunt you down."
"Perfectly clear sir."
"Ben!" he called and Ben came in," show her around the house, and where she'll be staying.."
"Whoa, I can't stay here I might not have things or other people but I have my own place."
"I need you here at all times for the needs of my children."
"Give me a couple days, to get everything set up then, and hopefully my room mate might understand."
"Do you share the responsibilities of the place you live?"
"Not exactly.."
"Then what is the problem?" He was on his feet now, and he looked mad.
"Sir, I am a independent woman, I'm use to my own things, space, and freedom, I get I'm taking the charge of two kids, but that shouldn't mean I need to give up everything."
He breathed in then out, I think to calm himself, then sat down.
"Three days, you have to sort through everything, and move here or lose the job."
"understood."
He nodded at Ben and I followed.
