Jason’s POV
A week after I killed Vanessa, I decided to try my luck with William. He would expect me to lay low for a while after what I had done, so this was the perfect time. I had spent the last week watching from a distance as the Royal Pack mourned their losses. Even though I felt terrible for the rest of the pack’s families, Blake reminded me that there would always be casualties in war.
The rogues I joined had set up camp about five miles away in a cave that seemed to go on forever with a few underground tunnels. The tunnels were used to travel to certain areas without other wolves catching their scent. They had been there for quite a while, and we never knew about them.
Together we decided it would be best for me to face William by myself as the stench they had would immediately give their positions away. Once ready, I allowed myself to be seen by a guard near the lake, knowing he wouldn’t do anything as William would want to kill me personally. Something I was betting on.
‘HAHA, he will not expect this to be how he dies.’ Blake roared in my head while pacing with anticipation. Sometimes I think he forgot I could feel his nervousness, just like he could feel mine.
‘Shut up mutt; we cannot afford to get cocky; that’s how we will fail.’ Though he was right, William would not expect what I had planned.
As William showed himself, I began to taunt him about Vanessa knowing it would have the reaction I wanted. For this part of the plan, I needed him to attack me.
“Your Luna claimed to be a descendant of the Moon Goddess, and yet I ended her life easily. Vanessa didn’t even try to fight me. She was weak, a pitiful excuse for a Luna and a disgrace to the Moon Goddess. You should have taken my advice a long time ago, William. You Would have saved yourself a lot of pain.” I Deliberately called him by his first name without using his title. He couldn’t stand for disrespect, so I used it to stoke the fire of anger inside him.
You didn’t give her a f*****g chance though, did you, Jason? What kind of coward attacks their Luna with a knife laced with poison and silver, then attempts to murder a f*****g child. MY CHILD. If you thought of your Luna as weak, you would have attacked her head-on like a man, you traitorous bastard!”
“She would never have stood a chance not against Blake; she hadn’t trained since she gave birth to your brat. If you wanted her to remain alive, you shouldn’t have made her a mother. You only have yourself to blame.”
“That is where you are wrong. Being a mother only made her stronger. You were too busy planning my downfall to register that. And as for Diamond, she would have ripped you apart without batting an eye; they were stronger and fiercer than even me. She never once used all her strength. She never needed to, and when she did need to, her chance was taken away by a man she had placed her trust in, a coward. BY YOU!” His eyes flickered red as Maximus showed his presence.
“Well, at least you got to say goodbye to her; you won’t get to say goodbye to your daughter. How does it feel to know her life will also end at my hands before she even gains her wolf.” I knew I had angered him as the vein in the centre of his forehead began to pulsate just as black fur sprouted along his arms.
As he shifted into his wolf, I stayed in my human form. Maximus was a giant wolf, more enormous than any other Alpha wolf, as he was the King of our kind. His fur was a deep black resembling the midnight sky. His eyes were a bright shade of red, glowing as they stared at me.
‘SHIFT and fight me, you coward?’ Maximus roared as he tried to force his Alpha command over me, and all I could do was laugh. I had renounced my place in this pack and had a witch cast a spell preventing any of his commands from working on me.
This disrespect I showed pushed him over the edge, and as he lunged towards me, I drew a silver knife laced with the same poison that killed his mate and stuck it into his side. He would die the same death his precious Luna had, slow and painful. Maximus howled, alerting the rest of the pack that he needed help. Before I had time to strike again, Maximus slammed me into a tree, not registering his wound's seriousness. I knew the silver and wolfsbane wouldn’t be enough to take him down, which is precisely why it had been mixed with a rare poison. I didn’t know the name of it as one of the rogues had gotten it telling me it would take even the Alpha King down, another gift from our witch.
As he lunged for me a second time, I rolled to the side, stabbing him again, but this time I plunged it into his leg. I needed to get the poison into his blood through as many places as possible. I watched as he slumped to the ground with a sickening thud, his jaw slacking and his legs wobbling as he tried to stand, but to no avail.
‘There, I thought one stab would have done while in this weakened state.’ Blake was impressed by how long William could withstand the poison, but I knew it would take more than one shot.
‘I told you we couldn’t underestimate him. His blood is strong. That’s why he was the King in the first place.’
Knowing William wouldn’t recover from this, I stabbed him again in the back, and before I turned away, I gave him some parting words.
“Once I find your daughter, your bloodline will cease to exist!” With a smirk etched onto my face, I walked away, leaving my once best friend to die a painful and lonely death.
Sixteen years later……
Marie’s POV
It had been nearly sixteen years since Jason and the rogues attacked the Royal Pack resulting in the death of our beloved Luna. When I left with Angel, I ran until I couldn’t run anymore; my legs cramped, and my throat burned as I struggled to breathe. I should have taken one of the SUVs that were parked in the garage, but there just wasn’t enough time, and I didn’t need to risk being caught.
Jason had followed us into the forest, but my stealth skills were much better than his tracking, and after a short time, I lost him. After ensuring we were no longer being followed, I mind-linked Nick to tell him we had escaped and where we were. William had decided I should take Angel to the Moonlight Pack as the Alpha there at the time; he had been a good friend of his dads and assured me it would be safe for us to reside in their territory.
I entered the local village, secured a vehicle, and made our way to Alpha John, knowing he was expecting us. It would be a long drive, but making the journey with a pup while in wolf form would have been risky.
The Moonlight Pack was situated on the edge of a small town, backing onto the mountains and surrounded by forest. It was the perfect place to hide; not even the humans ventured out this far, keeping it isolated. We didn’t stay in their pack house even though they had offered, instead choosing to stay in one of the houses on the edge of their territory. This way, if we were ever found out, it would make getting away much easier. The pack house was the first place anyone would likely look. Like the Royal Pack, many wolves from here had jobs in the local town and the pack house.
Nick found us shortly after William passed, and we raised Angel together, giving her the family she would need. Taking a job in the town, Nick worked as a car mechanic to avoid suspicion, and I became a stay-at-home mum. Being the Gamma of the Royal Pack, Nick earned much more than the average wolf and technically didn’t need to work. But as we didn’t want everyone to know where we were from, it’s what we had to do. Alpha John was The only person who knew who we were; as promised, he took our secret to the grave without even telling his son Jake.
Angel knew who her parents were; we made sure of that. They were the most amazing people in the world and deserved to be remembered. She also knew that she was the sole heiress to the Royal Pack, but we had warned her not to share that information with anyone. If shared with the wrong person, it could lead to the wrong people finding her. Jason was the main threat, but others, such as bounty hunters, were out there.
Angel began to look more like her mother every day, her hair long and curly, as yellow as the sun, and her eyes bright like the ocean. She was beautiful. However, she inherited her father’s short temper and attitude but also his kindness and the heart to help anyone, no matter who they were. She certainly had the makings of a good Luna and future Queen.
Angel had gotten her wolf Star at the age of ten, which was a traumatic experience for her and us. Although this was a lot earlier than ordinary wolves, she handled it well, which was a testament to the strength she held within herself. We put the early shift down to the fact that she had the moon goddess’s blood flowing through her veins. After all, her mother was a direct descendant.
