chapter one the fire that burns
Introduction
I was all alone now. In a matter of less than twenty four hours I had gone from being a child to two loving parents, to suddenly being an orphan to two dead parents. They say that being a Princess is the most precious thing to be, but not when you have to make the transformation from Princess to Queen in the blink of an eye and that's how it all happened, in the blink of an eye.
Chapter One The Fire That Burns
Hayley's P.O.V
My father's name is Logan and my mother's name is Layla, they were the Alpha King and Luna Queen and I was their Princess. Me and my mom were upstairs in my room, while my dad was in his office and it was just like any other night, until we heard the screams and sounds of things being broken. My mother knew straight away that something was wrong and quickly rushed to my door.
"Stay up here and be safe." My mother said with urgency, as she left, running down the stairs and that's when I heard her scream in terror.
"HOW DID YOU GET PAST THE GUARDS?! HOW DID YOU GET IN HERE?! LEAVE! NOW!" My mom screamed at the top of her lungs. I couldn't stay up here and listen to the events unfolding downstairs, I ran out of my room and down the stairs, just in time to see the tallest man I have ever seen. This man was dirty and he stunk to high hell of rotten eggs, the smell was so bad that it made me gag. His red eyes scared me and I don't know what color hair he had, it was so thick of dirt that I couldn't make it out. I looked around to see if there was anyone else here, but there wasn't, he was alone. I ran back up the stairs, grabbed my bow and arrow and ran back down to the third step as fast as I could. I had to move my long dark hair out of my eyes, so that I could get a clear shot. I pulled the string of my bow back with all my might, but my father was in the way.
"Dad, move I have a clear shot." I mind-linked my dad. He had his back to the man, but he looked up at me with such loving eyes and shook his head no.
"But dad. Please." I mind-linked him again, begging him to move and again he looked up at me and shook his head once more. My mother was watching with tears in her eyes and that's when I realised that he couldn't have moved even if he had wanted to, I watched as the light caught the silver blade, that was sticking into my dad's back.
"Take care of your mother." My dad mind-linked me and then he howled in agony, as the rogue twisted the sword and pulled it out of him, just to repeatedly stab him a further three times. The last one diving into his back and erupting out through his stomach, the rogue slid the sword out of my dad, making him fall to the ground. Dead. My eyes welled up with tears, but all I could see was red. I had my shot and took my aim, pulling the string back all the way and released two arrows. The first one hit his chest, but the second one went straight to his heart and the rogue howled loudly in pain, as he fell to its knees, clutching the arrow in his chest. I grabbed another arrow, c****d it and released it, hitting the rogue straight between the eyes. The rogue wobbled and then fell forward, causing the impact with the ground to push the arrow straight through and out the back of his head.
"DAD! DAD! DADDY PLEASE! PLEASE DON'T DIE! WE NEED YOU! PLEASE! DON'T LEAVE US!" I screamed and cried, clutching onto my dad and turning my dad over, so that he was facing up. My mother came over and kneeled in front of him.
"LOGAN BLACK DONT YOU DARE DIE ON ME! I'LL BE LOST WITHOUT YOU! YOU CAN'T LEAVE US! YOU CAN'T!" My mom screamed at my dad, gripping his hand and trying to shake him.
Ron's P.O.V
My head was badly bleeding, but I managed to finally stumble into the Alphas house and was shocked by the sight in front of me. Layla and Hayley were both screaming and Logan was lying on the floor in a pool of his own blood. I dropped to my knees in shock and slowly crawled closer to them, that's when I saw just how bad things were. Logan was dead.
"Please Moon Goddess, please take me instead, bring Logan back and take me in his place. Please, I beg you." I said to myself, praying with all my might, that the Moon Goddess would hear me and answer my prayers. I kept praying and kept a close eye on Logan, as Layla and Hayley sobbed their eyes out.
Logan's P.O.V
I was in darkness, complete and utter darkness. I couldn't see anything, I couldn't hear anything and I couldn't smell anything.
"Where are you? Layla? Hayley?" I repeatedly called out for them, but there was no answer. There was nothing, but a deafening silence. I walked around trying to find some semblance of….anything, when suddenly a bright light hurtled towards me and then I heard a voice.
"You are not alone my child." The voice said, while a woman's figure walked out of the light.
"Moon Goddess?" I whispered, shocked at what I was seeing, but she merely smiled at me.
"I'm going to give you a choice. You can either stay here and be at peace or you can go back to where your family needs you, but this will come at a cost." The Moon Goddess said. A choice, I get a choice.
"What's the cost?" I nervously asked, it must be pretty big for me to come back to life.
"Someone else will take your place. This is why I am here, someone has been praying to take your place so that you may live." The Moon Goddess simply said, should I dare to ask who it is? Am I allowed to ask who it is?
"Who will take my place?" I cautiously and curiously asked, but she yet again just smiled.
"Do not worry about that. Do you want to go back or stay here?" The Moon Goddess asked me and I didnt know what to do, my family needed me, but at the cost of another's life
"I want to go back." I finally decided, choosing my family.
"You made your choice." The Moon Goddess said, nodding, but after she said that she was gone. I started hearing voices and I started to stir, I blinked a few times and woke up. Layla grabbed hold of me and hugged me tightly.
"Take care of our daughter." Layla whispered in my ear and my eyes went wide with shock.
"NO! I CHANGED MY MIND! TAKE ME INSTEAD!!" I screamed, but before I could plead anymore, she fell limp in my arms.
"No No No No. Please goddess no. Please. Don't do this." I begged, as tears streamed down my face at the realisation that Layla was the one that had prayed to trade places with me. Hayley pulled on her mother's shoulder, as if trying to wake her up from a deep sleep.
"Mommy….come back….please….we can't do this without you." Hayley cried, but Layla was limp in my arms. She was gone. I rose my head up and howled into the night, releasing all my pain and anger into that piercing howl. Ron stood and stumbled out the front door, he dropped to his knees and howled to the moon. Other packs must have heard us howling and quickly shifted, running at speed to our territory. To their Queen.
Hayley's P.O.V
Members from other packs surrounded us, as we all howled into the night. I was on my knees crying, I lifted my head up and let out the most sorrowful and loudest howl I could, I will never trust the Moon Goddess again. I hated her for taking my mother. After a while the howling quietened down and my dad laid my mother down and stood up, facing each and every wolf.
"You are welcome to stay the night. The funeral will be tomorrow." My dad said, he had a broken and defeated look on his face, but then again so did I. The wolves bowed and took their leave of us. My dad knelt back down beside my mom, clutching onto her for dear life, while I tightly held onto her hand. My dad and I both raised our heads one last time and howled into the night, mourning a mother, a wife and a Queen. We didn't sleep at all that night, not that we tried to, we were both filled with so much shock that we couldn't believe that she was gone. Sadness drifted through all the different packs and the whole kingdom at the news of the Queens untimely passing.
Unknown P.O.V
"Did he kill him?" I asked.
"Yes, but the queen took his place." The rogue said.
"That wasn't supposed to happen." I said, shocked by what I was hearing.
"Well it did and now our king is dead thanks to you." The rogue snapped at me, over the death of his rogue king.
"Who cares. I guess if you want something done right, You've got to do it yourself." I said, shrugging the rogue off.
"I guess you've got to now, because I'm not helping you." The rogue said, walking away from me.
Hayley's P.O.V
The next day my dad was still holding onto my mom, he looked like he was in a daze, but then again I think all of us were. My dad picked her up and carried her outside, the grounds were filled with more packs and many of them had wanted to and needed to come and pay their respects. My dad walked ahead of me, carrying my mom in his arms and laid her onto the funeral pyre that had been built. Beta Ron stood right beside us and my dad and I each took a torch, lighting them and placing them to the pyre.
We all watched as the flames ignited the pyre and the flames grew higher and fiercer with every passing second. I couldn't watch, as my mom's body was engulfed in flames and I turned to look at my dad. He had a determined look on his face, a look I had never seen before, like he had decided on something, but what? My dad turned to me, hugging me tightly and kissing my forehead, he then turned to Beta Ron and shook his hand, bringing him into a hug. What was going on?
"Take care of my daughter." My dad whispered to Beta Ron, but I managed to hear it. Why would Beta Ron have to take care of me? Where was my dad going that he couldn't or wouldn't be able to? My dad turned and faced the rest of the packs, that were standing behind us.
"I want to introduce you to your new Alpha Queen, my daughter Hayley." My dad announced.
"What? Wait! Why?" I exclaimed, shocked, but before I could stop him, he jumped into the burning pyre. Everyone rushed around, trying to find a way to get him out, but it was no use. The flames were too high and the fire burned so hot, that he was gone in a matter of minutes. I ran towards the pyre, screaming my dad's name, but Beta Ron had grabbed me by the waist and pulled me back to safety. How could they do this? How could they both leave me? How could they leave me all alone?
I shifted into my huge black wolf, lifted my head and howled into the smoke filled sky, the other wolves around me did the same and then walked over to me bowing to their new Queen. A title I didn't want, I was only seventeen, how was I going to run a pack let alone a kingdom? What just happened? How could my parent's leave me like this? I was in that much shock, that I didn't even realise I had shifted back, until Beta Ron handed me a long shirt. I put it on, not really thinking about it, I was in too much of a daze. A wolf came forward and shifted back into his human form, but it was like I didn't really see him, like I was looking right through him. It wasn't until he stood in front of me, bowing that I noticed he was quite tall, with short black hair and brown eyes.
"My Queen, I have known your father for many years, he was a great king. If I am right, he will have everything you need to know in his office." The man said, but I lowered my head in mourning.
"What is your name sir?" I asked him.
"My name is Bear." The man replied and I nodded.
"Very well Bear, thank you for being here today, but I must go inside now." I said, turning to look at everyone.
"I want to thank every one of you for coming today. We feel great sorrow today, but I promise, I'll be a great Queen just like my dad was a great king." I said, it was like I was a robot, my mouth was forming the words and sound was coming out, but I had no idea what I was actually saying or why I was saying it. I turned around, walking back inside and the packs all howled in sorrow throughout the rest of the day. I walked into my dad's office and fell to my knees, sobbing my heart out. I stayed like that for a few hours, until Beta Ron came in to check on me. He ran to me and scooped me up in his arms, rocking me back and forth, while I cried.
"I asked the goddess to take me instead, I offered myself to her, but I didn't know your mother was doing the same thing. I'm so sorry Hayley." Beta Ron whispered to me. I was shaking not from the cold, but from the sadness I was feeling. I cried so much that I didn't have any more tears left inside of me, I got to my feet with the help of Beta Ron and nodded to him.
"I guess I need to start acting like a queen now." I said, raspily. My throat was killing me from all the screaming and sobbing I had done. Beta Ron nodded and gave me a weak smile.
"I'll be alright, go to your mate, she will be needing you as well, if I need you I'll link you." I said, trying to reassure him. He nodded and left, shutting the door behind him. I hung my head low, as I walked over to my dad's chair.
"Mommy, Daddy. Why did you leave me? Why did you leave me here all alone to do this all by myself?" I said out loud to myself and tears once again started streaming from my eyes and onto the floor.
