“Sometimes you are put in situations in life. Other times, you put yourself in those situations to live.”
Lavender had been informed by the butler of the estate, that Drew had made his way off the grounds via horseback for the morning, as she was expected to familiarize herself within the home set before her. She knew the truth that emerged unintentionally the night before had frightened him, but she would not be able to see him to explain it further. When a female wolf gives her virginity, she is marking that person as her mate. This meant that male wolves could find other mates, but this would be the female’s choice. Only when her mate would die, would she then have the opportunity to gain another-but it would never be quiet like the first one. In many ways, it was mirrored to that of humans-no matter who the first person you gave your virtue is may be to you today, you still remember who they were and the moment-sometimes down to the scent of the pillows themselves or the song playing in the background. However, claiming a mate was more than a s****l preference-it was a spiritual connection-and something that would bind two people together in the present, and the future. The claiming of a mate was a sentence of submission and determination to the other person. If a wolf’s mate is in peril, they will be the first to know as they can sense it. But this also means they can sense where they are at all times, and can pick out their scent among a crowd of other wolves. It would be the ultimate knowledge of commitment that one could give as a lycan-as it acted as a brand to other wolves, especially the mate to the alpha.
But she couldn’t bring herself to allow that person to be Maximus. The thought of having to bare his children was something she battled with for some time, but convinced herself to do as it would be her ‘duty’ as a woman and a female lycan. But when she found herself in the position before him, the lustful hunger in his eyes that told her he would ravage her, she couldn’t bring herself to be handled in such a way. Instead, she thought of living her life within the woods, hidden beneath the moonlight, even if she would have to remain in her lycan form for the rest of eternity.
“Can I speak with you?” A familiar voice echoed throughout the room around her as Drew had emerged from the hall and into the greenhouse, where she had decided to spend her afternoon. She grew nervous as to what it was he would desire to speak to her about. Perhaps he would claim her then and there, forcing her to tarnish any attempt to be mated to another man-but due to the sadness behind his eyes, she could tell, that it would be something of pain to him. She was unaware it would also be difficult for her.
“I am releasing you as of this moment.” Her heart stopped for a moment. It had only been two days into a one year sentence, and he was allowing her the freedom in which she could live about her life. There would be consequences for having left her marriage-but with him missing, she would be free to live on as a survivor instead of a harlot. But as she thought of a life without Drew’s protection, she knew her life would be a short one. But she had just found her footing with him, or at least a place in which they found common ground-and so she didn’t want to appear clingy or desperate.
“Why?” She managed to murmur from her slightly glossed lips as his eyes looked to her in surprise.
“I thought you would be happy.”
She hesitated, unable to claim that she knew he would protect her, as there may come a day in which he would give that commitment to someone else-but the way he had protected her twice before had allowed her to know that he was a man of his word.
“You care about my happiness?” he frowned at her response before she quickly apologized. “I mean...what about the year of finding out if I was worthy of being your mate-” He stopped her, the ‘m’ word seemingly striking a chord with him.
“I am allowing you to go, get whatever s**t you need to take with you and go!” He spoke angrily at her before marching away from the greenhouse and leaving her in confusion. As she returned to her room, she happened upon a set of double doors that had been ajar as Astrid had made her way between them-seeking out Drew as his splurge of anger against Lavender had been heard throughout the entire Castle.
“You are really going to just cast her away?” Astrid spoke, surprisingly at Lavender’s defense. “Believe me, I think you are an i***t for having gotten involved with her issues but-”
“If I wanted to talk about this, I would with my shrink.”
“I know you-”
“Then you would know it is best to let a sleeping dog lie.” Astrid threw her hands up in the air to show mercy before Drew made his way across the room-seemingly pacing. “Do whatever she needs, just get her out of here…”
“Did she do something? Is it about the bathroom last night-”
“Astrid!” He warned her, as her curiosity was beginning to go against his instruction. “If she needs a phone, a house, even a goddamn car, you make sure it happens. I don’t want her back here.” As Astrid went to speak, he raised his voice, claiming for her to do it “now” as she had no choice unless desiring to lengthen his anger. As Astrid made her way towards the door of this office space, Lavender quickly made herself scare around the corner, only to hear Astrid speak expletives beneath her breath. Lavender knew she was running out of time to speak to Drew about her desire to stay, and so she made her way into the office. “I told you to leave me!” He shouted towards her before Drew paused for a moment, taking in Lavender’s presence.
“I’ve made you angry…” She spoke in the form of a statement more than a question-only for him to hesitate before answering-validating her point even further.
“No.” He finally answered, making her anxious with each passing moment. “I was unaware of your...circumstances…”
“Circumstances?” She played stupid, wanting to hear him say it was because she was virtuous-but she couldn’t bring herself to understand why that mattered to him. After all, he must have encountered a million women before her that had been without men...or at least a few…
“It doesn’t matter, I am glad you told me-”
“I’m not...you have been acting off…” Her confession made him take a step back in surprise. She was so timid up until now, almost fearful to speak of anything further than her name, and now she had been vocal against him. “I know we aren’t exactly lifelong chums or anything, but you act like you can’t stand the sight of me.”
“Believe it or not, I do not have to tell my reasons for doing things to you.” Speaking these words, he went to leave the conversation in full, unaware until the sound of her voice, that Lavender had followed behind him.
“I am not asking for that, but am I not allowed to know why you are kicking me out?” He turned, as if going to speak something that would be an answer to the way he had been acting-but decided to keep his lips sealed when understanding that only more confusion would be brought with this. “I don’t want to leave.” She finally spoke just before he made his way towards the end of the hallway to descend down the steps that led to the grand foyer. When hearing this desire of hers, he paused, and turned to face her.
“Is that so?”
She nodded. “As much as I wish it wasn’t true, I am dead meat the minute I step a toe outside that door…”
He paused for a moment, crossing his arms across his chest, before looking to her. “Fine, if you want to stay, I will have to teach you a few things.”
“Alright…” She spoke cautiously, unsure if these ‘things’ would be more for her or for him. “Meet me in the greenhouse first thing in the morning. We’ll start there.” She nodded before watching him abandon her yet again to her thoughts-her assumptions that wondered what it was about him learning she was a virgin that frightened him to the point of giving up his prized vehicles and money for. But now she was focused upon just what it was he would teach her.
