Everyone in the passageway gasped as the slap resounded all over the area. The maid's eyes stung with tears as she held her reddened cheek and Rune felt immense pity for her.
“How dare you?!” Leah yelled. “How dare you drop my bags on the ground! Do you have any idea how much it's worth?! It costs way more than your life, you filthy peasant!” She screamed, grabbing the maid by the hair.
The maid let out a cry, struggling against Leah's iron grip and Rune quickly rushed over to the scene.
“That's enough, Leah! Let her go,” He said sternly, grabbing her arm off the maid's hair. The maid scrambled to the side instantly.
“No!” Leah yelled. “I should teach that incompetent fool a lesson! How dare she drop my bags?!” Leah struggled against Rune's grip but he refused to let go.
“Stop it,” He said, through gritted teeth. “You're making a scene. Let's go.” He didn’t give her a chance to say otherwise before dragging her down the passageway with him. He let out a frustrated sigh as he heard Asha and Knox chuckle behind him.
Those two were assholes. They were supposed to help him with his current predicament but they chose to laugh at him instead.
“Let me go, Rune!” Leah yelled, still struggling against him but he refused and dragged her all the way to her chamber. Once they were inside, he shut the door behind him.
“Leah, for the love of the goddess, please stop! You just got back! Why are you making a scene already?” Rune exclaimed, pacing around the room.
“A scene?!” Leah yelled, eyes wide like she couldn't believe what she was hearing.
“That incompetent buffoon dropped my bags on the floor and she didn't even apologize. Did you expect me to just let that slide?!”
“You didn't even give her a chance to apologize before slapping the poor girl!” Rune's voice rose in frustration and he was so close to ripping his hair out.
“Why the hell are you taking her side? She's just a servant. I am your fiancée. You should be supporting me, not her! You're going to get married to me, not her!” Leah bellowed and Rune couldn't believe what he was hearing. How did this issue even come down to taking sides?
He rubbed his temples in frustration as he felt a headache. He never had a moment's peace in this damn palace. Despite his agitated emotions, he managed to speak in a calm voice.
“I am not taking her side, Leah. I am just trying to maintain the peace in the palace like I should. Help me out by not causing another scene, please?’
Leah let out a sigh running her fingers through her hair. “Fine, I'll behave.”
“Thank you, Leah,” Rune said before exiting her chamber. Once he got out, he ran into the rest of the maidservants carrying Leah's luggage and his betas. He eyed the luggage and let out a sigh. Why did she go around carrying so much stuff anyway?
“Try not to drop her stuff this time, alright?” He said to the maids.
“Yes, your majesty.” They answered and entered Leah's chambers one by one.
“Looks like you've got your hands full.” Knox said, sporting an amused expression and Rune wanted to wipe that look off his face so badly.
“The offer to break her arms still stands.” Asha chipped in and Rune shot her a glare.
“Lay a finger on my fiancée and I'll throw you in the dungeons.” He threatened and Asha's eyes went wide before she burst out laughing.
“Seriously? You would throw your beloved left-hand beta in the dungeons?”
“You think I wouldn't? Just try me and see.” Rune said and his betas chuckled out loud. After laughing for a while, Asha's face slowly turned serious.
“Actually, Rune, there's something Knox and I need to talk to you about.” She said and Knox raised a brow.
“We do?” He asked in a confused tone and Asha rolled her eyes.
“Come on, Knox. We do. That important thing, remember?”
Knox still looked confused for a moment before he finally understood whatever it was that Asha meant. Rune looked at two betas in confusion before rolling his eyes. They needed to speak to him again? What was the problem this time?
“If this is about releasing Hera, I don't want to hear it.” He said and began to make his way down the passageway. With Leah back in the palace, Rune had enough on his plate and he couldn't deal with this right now.
The betas rushed after him and Knox grabbed his shoulder.
“Please, just hear us out. This is about Hera but we're not here to convince you to release her. At least not now. It's something else entirely.” Knox said and that caught Rune's attention.
He slowly came to a halt and turned to the betas. “Fine. What is this about?”
Asha looked briefly before turning back to him. “We can't talk here. Let's find somewhere more secluded.”
Rune let out a sigh. If he wasn't curious about what his betas had to say, he would have turned around and walked away instantly.
“Fine.” He said and let them lead the way. They quickly found a secluded spot and sat down. To his delight, Asha wasted no time in speaking.
“Hera told us something very interesting. When she turned, she met a wolf with red eyes and that's not all. She described an experience she had which seemed awfully similar to a mate bond.” She said and Rune gulped as his hands grew sweaty.
“Why are you telling me this? What does it have to do with me?” Rune said hotly and Knox raised a brow.
“Really, Rune? If what she said is true, then it has everything to do with you.”
Rune stood up from his seat abruptly. “How can you just believe everything she says? What if she was confused from the shift and she didn't know what she saw?”
“Don't do this, Rune. We both know she is telling the truth. She saw the wolf with red eyes.” Asha said and Rune had enough.
“You two will not speak of this again. Do you hear me?” He growled. “If you do. I'll have your heads.”
Knox let out a sigh and Asha shook her head sadly. “Yes, your majesty.” They answered in unison.
