I looked from her father to her mother and then over and down to my mate. I couldn't be the prince of a country and move to another and live on another King's land. the only way that would work is if I married a person of the royal family. And I knew... I knew that Violet might be my little princess, but she was not the princess of Romania.
"Cosmina's mate, Alex, he moved here from England. He now speaks fluent Romanian. Same with Daniel. He moved from Colombia." I had heard the accents last night, not all of the maters were from here, but they didn't come from families like mine.
"Adriana came from Mexico." Her mother added and I just nodded slowly so they knew I was listening. "And Serena was from Jordan."
"Mom... dad, we need time to talk about this between us." I heard my mate tell them and I just held my tongue and decided not to hurt anyone's feelings. I had lied already, I needed to make amends with my mate before we told them.
I worked my fork across the plate and I went right to the eating portion of the meal where I tried not to get into my own head. I had done that a lot as a teenager, ignoring my brothers, ignoring my uncle or aunt, and more often than not I would kind of go on auto pilot and end up being the last person at the table.
Here, being here next to my mate... there was no way that I could let myself space out that hard. I was aware of her father telling her that he would get one of her brothers to cover all of her ski and snowboarding classes so that we can talk, that we were to be given time together as if we were newlyweds.
I sort of refocused when they mentioned something about a fitting. I looked to my mate who had the biggest smile on her face at the mention of a dress and ceremony... and I realized that they were talking about a weddings ceremony.
"I am sure you didn't bring a suit to vacation, but I am guessing when your brothers come and see your mate that they can bring you one." I looked to her father again and I, again, held my tongue.
"I can go and buy or rent one." I told him this time and he just narrowed his eyes before nodding slowly. "I am guessing this ceremony can be done in a matter of days since you own the resort. If you want funding I can supply the card-"
"She has a dowry. We pay for our children." Her father cut me off and I nodded slowly.
"If I am insulting you sir, just tell me. I did not grow up with people being offended often." I told him knowing that while that was true since I didn't talk too much, and the fact that we were princes so what we said usually got done. I was getting the feeling that this man has already stopped liking me.
"You are insulting me. You are taking my youngest from home, you are saying you will pay for everything... are you saying that I can't provide for all of my children?" He asked me and I just took a breath.
"No. I am saying that as a mate I have always been told that once she is mine, she is all mine. Mine to provide for, care for, to give her what she wanted." I told him and I had to shift in my seat so I was upright and I made sure to hold my ground.
"She might be your mate, but she is my daughter." He was now glaring at me and I heard my mate clear her throat before she made a move to stand up.
"We are going now dad. Thanks for putting your ego on the table." She turned and started walking and I looked to see if her mother was going to walk with her. Then I realized she was talking about her and I leaving together.
I stood up slowly, kept my coffee cup in my hand as I walked to the door, trailing after her as she started to go through the little resort. We weren't going the way we came so I kept my distance incase she was angry with me as well.
I had never seen an angry mate. My uncle bent to my aunts will, Vlad and Patty had the best relationship... my parents weren't around much in my memory for me to hear their arguments. Mates might argue, but I had never seen a couple do it.
We got outside and I drained my cup before it froze. I tossed it in the small trashcan just outside the door and looked around. The snow here was basically like looking at it back home, but as I turned and leaned against the banister near her, she was taking a couple deep breaths and I was sure that she was angry with me.
"You know I didn't mean to upset you, or your father." I told her as she started to calm down completely.
"I know, and I am not upset with you." I looked down at her as she moved to face me and I moved to make sure that our bodies were facing each other.
"You aren't?" I asked her and she shook her head.
"My dad... I have seen him do it. He makes my siblings live here. I knew he would do the same, but to get mad at you because you don't want to move here." She told me and I just waited as she blinked and looked around. "I would love to stay here. I would, but you didn't say you didn't want to move here, you said that you couldn't."
"That's very true." I told her and sighed. "I was overwhelmed when this, us, happened. I was feeling all of those eyes on me, and I didn't want to be... I didn't want to be exactly who I have been all my life."
"Which is who?" She asked and I wanted to bite my tongue, I wanted to hold it, to act like this wasn't huge.
"I am Prince Luka Moroz, the King Alpha of Russia's youngest brother. I lied about my last name. I can't move here because I am a prince, and I wish that was something that could be said without the lie behind it because lying has already made me a bad mate, but I wanted a normal day, a single normal day without people being worried about bowing or holding their tongue or asking about what I can give you." I told her and I saw the way her eyes softened and I stopped, I didn't want to push her into making me feel sorry for me. What I did was wrong, and she needed to know I knew that. "Whenever people learn who I am, any vampire, any wolf, anyone... they act different. Almost immediately."
"So you lied thinking I wouldn't act myself?"
"Not just you. Your father, mother, sisters and brothers and their mates. Have you ever met your Alpha King?" I asked and she shook her head. "If he came here, graced the resort with his mate and kids, you would act like any other wolf. You would avoid eye contact, you would bend to his will, not over speak... it's almost automatic." I told her and she sighed before looking away.
"So you're a prince, and I am your mate, and that is why we can't stay in Romania." She said it slowly and I swallowed around the lump in my throat. I am sure there will be yelling soon enough.
"A prince on someone else's land is going to raise tension. it would be different if-"
"If I was a princess." She cut me off and she nodded slowly.
"You are a princess Violet. My princess." I told her and she laughed before covering her mouth. "Funny?"
"Every girl wants to be a princess when she's little. I never in a million years thought it would be a real future for me. I won't have to... to do anything right?" She asked and I smiled softly and shook my head.
"No, no duties for you. Just the king and queen. My brother and sister in law." I told her and she nodded slowly.
"So what does that leave us to do?" I saw the way she looked confused and looked around.
"Love, live, and try not to piss other people off. Not that I think we will piss people off, but... it comes with the territory. We didn't piss anyone off in America but we were still in the middle of some serious issues." I told her and she nodded and then she seemed to realize something.
"I heard about that, and I heard your name... I just thought it was a coincidence." She whispered and then she took a deep intake of a breath and then she had this sad look on her face. "Your parents..." She whispered and I looked away then, nodding slowly. I am sure being on the other side of Ukraine they had heard about what the king alpha there did to our father.
"And... then there is the pity. I used to get pity at Balls we had to go to when we were kids and teens and there was nothing like it." I had gotten used to the pity looks when people used to whisper about us. I never thought I would get some of those looks from my mate.
"I am sorry about your parents. Really I am." She whispered and I nodded. Before I could ask her not to keep going, my phone started to ring again.
"This would be my other brother." I told her seeing Dimitri's name. I took a few steps away from her and hit answer. "Yes?"
"When are you coming back?" Dimitri asked right away and I sighed. "You know Ivan wasn't trying to be an ass. I should have stopped him but I didn't know what he was doing until all the girls were there and he told me." He kept going on and on about how I needed to come home... and then I looked over at my mate. She knew the truth now, so why hold back from telling the one person I could count on to keep it to himself if I asked.
"I'm not coming home yet. I can't." I told him and then I heard his scoff telling me that I knew where I was and I knew how to get home. "Dimitri, when I tell you this, you will tell no one else." I told him sternly and I got a sigh.
"Well go on then, tell me why you can't come home."
"I found my mate. I am... I am with her right now. I am meeting her family, hanging around. Being a mate." I told him slowly and he was quiet for a long time that I was sure he had muted me. "Dimitri?"
"I heard you. Little brother has his mate at last." He laughed lightly and I smiled softly and looked back at Violet. "Well, tell me, name? Country? Brunette? Blonde?"
"Violet... and I will let you know when we are ready to come home." I told him and he laughed.
"Keeping her all to yourself will only bring wrath upon you. You know Uncle and Aunt Ruby are going to Romania tomorrow then in a week they are coming home. A week. Aunt Ruby will be here in a week, see that you're not here, demand to know why, and I will crack and everyone will know. That is your warning. In a week everyone will know."
"I know. I kind of counted on telling her first but you asked, I had to answer."
"I know. Make us proud Luka. Make her happy. Bring her home when you're ready." He told me and I knew the underlying tone was telling me that it better be within a week or two because that was how long it would take them to track me down after Aunt Ruby made them.
That is... if Patty didn't crack and tell everyone.
