I wasn't sure what woke me.
But when I did blink my eyes open, I did hear someone upstairs walking. I looked at the clock hanging on the wall of the basement and it showed 3:00 am.
Who could be up at this hour?
I used my powers to feel the presence that was upstairs. This was a power I learned to use recently. That way I knew who was around me at all times.
This presence I felt, I did not recognize. It actually felt kinda off. Almost as if the presence upstairs was shielded by something. I couldn't even tell if it was a he or she up there.
That completely woke me up. I sat up in bed and I concentrated my powers again, this time focusing on the inner essence of the person.
Mistress Magee taught me how to do that by focusing first on the person's heartbeat, then follow their heartbeats until I could get a feel for their essence. I did that, with the individual upstairs.
It had to be an intruder.
The heartbeat leads me to know it's a male.
Oh, sweet Enchanted Goddess, its a wolf.
I can feel the wolves' soul mixed with the man.
It's a werewolf.
I yelp out loud then quickly cover my mouth. Screaming into my hand.
I need to be quiet. I can't let him find me.
I say the cloaking incantation that I heard Mistress Celia use on her sister once. I hope I remember it right.
My cloaking magic won't hold out for long because of how weak I am. Por favor, sweet Enchanted Goddess, make this work.
I haven't eaten in days. Master Nicolai hasn't fed me my rations for this week yet. I hope I am strong enough to hold this cloak.
I can hear the wolf moving in the house. I'm praying to the Enchanted Goddess, not that the goddess will hear my pleas, to hopefully keep my cloaking magic up long enough until the intruder leaves.
I moved my leg and the chain tied to my ankle rattles. The wolf upstairs stops walking. I instantly freeze and I mouth a curse, Chingao.
The wolf walks to the door that leads to the basement. He walks down the stairs slowly and I close my eyes, trying to concentrate on keeping my cloaking magic working.
The wolf looked around the basement. He slowly walks around the mattress.
I didn't realize that I was also cloaking the mattress and it's putting a strain on my strength.
I can feel my magic waning.
I can't hold it any longer and let my cloaking magic give away. I curl in a ball, in the corner of my dirty mattress.
The wolf jumps back and growls, probably startled by my sudden appearance in the corner of the basement.
The male I see before me is tall. His hair is midnight black and wavy on his head. His face has a sharp chin and I am sure if he smiled he would have dimples. His black, muscle shirt is stretched tight around his muscular chest and arms.
His eyes, though. They are dark and currently glaring at me.
What does he want with me?
What is he doing in our coven house?
I am about to ask him but stop when he starts walking to the edge of the mattress. His eyes on the chains tied to my foot.
"What do you want from me, wolf?" I try for a fierce tone but end up sounding like a damn squeaky mouse.
No wonder they call me Rata. It first perfectly.
"Absolutely f*****g nothing from you, witch!" The wolf growls at me.
He reaches for the chains and I move my ankle away from him.
"Do you want to f*****g stay chained down here?" The wolf yells at me and I tremble at the malice in his voice.
I wonder why this male is so angry at me.
"Why are you so angry at me," I just end up asking him, in a soft voice.
"Because I hate your f*****g kind. Now let me see those damn chains." The wolf orders me.
Could it be, he could set me free. But he just said he hated my kind.
I hesitate but slowly move my ankle to him. The thought that he can release me from the hell that I have been living in all my life, is too enticing not to hope for.
Ayudame, por favor. Please, sweet Enchanted Goddess, let him be the one to help me.
The wolf roughly grabs my ankle to inspect the chains.
I instantly feel a spark, coming from the point of origin where he touches me. The spark is strong and I feel my magic take a kick, almost as if he shocked me with electricity.
I see the wolves' eyes open wide and he drops my ankle quickly. He slowly backs up.
"Did you just electrocute me?" I ask the wolf.
The male's eyes open even wider, as if in shock.
He keeps backing away from me as if I was a monster.
He shakes his head and whispers, "Noooooo!!! It can't be!" he backs up towards the staircase.
"What? Where are you going? Please don't leave me down here. Por favor!" I whisper-yell at him grabbing the chains in my hands and rattling them.
He can't leave me here.
I stand up and try running to reach him but I trip over the damn chains and fall on the hard, cold, concrete basement floor. Scraping my knees and hands.
The wolf hesitates for a second as he sees me fall, and I hope that means he is coming back to help me.
But then he does the unthinkable.
He shakes his head and then runs up the stairs. Leaving the basement door open.
No!
"No, Por favor. Help me! No me dejes aqui. Don't leave me here!" I cry out to him, not caring if I wake anyone in the house up. My tears are gushing from my eyes.
I need him to come back and help me.
I try running again, but like always I can only reach the bottom step of the staircase.
I strain to reach the next step. Pulling my ankle and feeling the chains cut into it.
I ignore the pain and still try to pull myself up the stairs.
After I feel like my ankle is on fire and the nails on my hands are all bloody, I give up.
No longer feeling the wolf in the house.
I drag myself back to my bed.
The house is silent.
My cries didn't wake anyone.
How could he leave me here? Does he have no heart?
I have never met a wolf before. Are all his species as callous as he?
My tears are still streaming down my face as I lay in my bed and see the sunrise through the small window of the basement.
I hear stirring in the house and know everyone is waking up.
I feel Master Nicolai's essence walking out of one of the bedrooms on the second floor, I feel sad because I know it's Mistress Magee's bedroom he slept in last night. I hear her screams of pain as the Master had his way with her.
He walks down to the first floor and walks toward the kitchen.
He stops before entering the kitchen. He slowly walks to the basement door. He looks down and sees me laying on my mattress.
I am pretty sure I twisted my ankle because it still feels like it's on fire and it's very swollen. Even though it hurts, I stand up next to my mattress. Not putting weight on my ankle.
The master looks angry and calm. That is a very bad combination. I back up as he walks stalks towards me.
"Why the f**k is the basement door open? Who did you have down here, you little w***e?" he yells at me.
I have no time to answer when the first punch lands on my face.
