I woke up as Ms. Vera was shaking me awake. She was screaming “Wake up! Wake up you lazy maid!”
I tried to get up but my body felt so heavy. I looked at the clock and saw that it was already 7 am.
Luisa: “I’m sorry miss. I’m not feeling very well.”
Ms. Vera: “How is that my problem? I’m paying you to work for me and not to just sleep!”
I wanted to respond that she’s actually not paying me, at least not yet, but decided to just shut my mouth as I tried to get up.
Luisa: “I’m getting up now, miss. I’m sorry.”
I went to the bathroom first to do my morning routine. It was really difficult and moving is a challenge for me. I looked in the mirror and I saw the big bruise on my left cheek. My eyes are a little swollen and I looked really sick.
Once I’ve gotten out of the bathroom, I was going to check on baby Cass when Ms. Vera pushed me out of her room and said that she didn’t want me to give whatever virus I have to her baby.
I just nodded and headed to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. I wasn’t really coughing or sneezing so I wasn’t sure what gave Ms. Vera the idea that I have a virus. I think I got a fever because of the beating I got from her yesterday. I don’t know how or why but that’s the only aberration in my activities that could have caused it.
I finished preparing breakfast slowly and set the table. I almost dropped the plates a few times because I was shaking. Thankfully I didn’t.
I was finishing up in the kitchen when I suddenly got scared when I heard a voice saying “Hi there, pretty lady. You don’t look so good today.”
I looked at the man who just spoke to me and it’s none other than Mike. He’s dressed to go out. Ms. Vera arrived not long after and put baby Cass on her high chair while she took a seat around the dining table. I got another plate for Mike since I only prepared one for Ms. Vera.
Ms. Vera: “Go to Cassandra’s room and prepare her things for the day. Mike and I are taking her out. Don’t leave the house and don’t go into my bedroom. If you steal anything you won’t be able to get away from me. I know where your family lives.”
I felt insulted but just nodded and said “Yes, miss.”
I must admit that Ms. Vera has nice things but none of it interests me. I am more interested in essential things that I can’t live without. I don’t need jewelry or fancy clothes. The things I have are enough to make me happy.
Baby Cass was looking at me and calling me “Wisa, Wisa,” but Ms. Vera stopped me from coming close to her and told her about the wonderful things in store for them today.
I headed to baby Cass’ room and packed her bag. I put enough diapers and change of clothes, as well as her feeding bottle, formula and baby wipes. I also put in her favorite toy just so she’ll have something to play with when she gets bored.
I took the bag out of her room and put it in the living room. I wonder what time they’ll be back. I didn’t want to ask but I was hoping I could go out to get some medicine for my fever. I know that Ms. Vera has some in her bathroom, but I didn’t want to ask her. She probably won’t give me any anyway, since hasn’t even offered one to me despite knowing that I am sick.
I am at least comforted by the fact that I could sleep all day since I will be alone in the house. Hopefully, I’ll feel better when I wake up.
When they left, I suddenly felt lonely. I would miss baby Cass since I am used to seeing her all day and spending all my time with her.
I cleaned up the dishes and was disheartened to see that they didn’t leave any food for me. I didn’t know that Mike was here so I didn’t prepare that much. I didn’t have the strength to prepare any more food, so I just drank water and ate some crackers after I cleaned up in the kitchen.
I decided to lay down in the couch just so I would wake up when Ms. Vera gets home. I looked around the house and was thankful that I didn’t have to clean up since I clean up pretty much everyday anyway.
I set the alarm for noon just in case they get home at that time. I didn’t want my boss to find me sleeping on the couch and getting called lazy again.
I woke up after a few hours feeling very cold. I got up and went to my room and laid on my bed. I covered myself with my blanket. I was so thankful that I decided to buy a blanket. It wasn’t an essential purchase, but I wanted to be able to sleep comfortably so I eventually went for it.
One thing that I needed that I didn’t want to spend money on was an electric fan. All the rooms in the house except mine are air conditioned, and my room didn’t even have a window so it could get really hot in the summer. Since the weather is still cool, I didn’t buy the fan yet. I’ll probably do it once the heat becomes intolerable.
I’ve only been asleep for about 30 minutes when I heard the doorbell ringing. I wonder who it is. I suddenly felt dizzy when I got up. Once I got out of my room, I braced myself against the walls to hold myself up. When I got to the door, I saw Jax standing on the other side as soon as I opened it. I don’t know what happened next because everything swirled around as I blacked out and felt myself falling down.
------------------------------------
I woke up startled and when I opened my eyes, I didn’t recognize where I was. I remember feeling dizzy earlier and collapsing after seeing Jax. Where am I and what happened after I collapsed?
I sat up and felt some pain in my head. I felt slightly better than earlier. I looked at what I was wearing and noticed that it’s different from what I was wearing earlier. I had on a large shirt that reached up to my mid thigh. I wasn’t wearing the long pants that I had on earlier. I gasped as I couldn’t feel my bra on. I was a little relieved that I still had my panties on.
I was going to get up from the bed when the bedroom door opened and in came Jax carrying a tray of what appears to be food. My stomach grumbled as I realized I haven’t eaten anything yet aside from water and crackers.
Luisa: “Jax? Where am I? What am I doing here?”
Jax: “You’re in my apartment. I brought you here because you collapsed and you were so hot. You had a very high fever so I wiped your body down with warm water.”
Luisa: “Did you change my clothes too?”
Jax: “Yeah. You started sweating so I put you into one of my shirts.”
Luisa: “Uhm, where’s my bra?”
Jax: “I took that off too since your whole body was really hot.”
Luisa: “Oh.”
Jax: “Don’t worry, I didn’t take advantage of yeah while you were asleep. By the way, you have very nice bo*bs.”
I felt myself blushing and I heard Jax chuckling as I covered myself up with the blanket up to the top of my head. I can’t believe Jax saw me naked. No other person has seen my naked body before. I can’t believe that it’s my neighbor whom I barely know who saw it. Still, I should be thankful that he took care of me and that he didn’t just leave me lying on the floor when I collapsed.
Jax: “Eat this. I made some chocolate porridge. It’s the one that came in the box and it’s the only sick person's food I have in the apartment. You should eat before taking some medicine.”
When I heard chocolate porridge, I slowly lowered the blanket and Jax was now sitting on the bed close to me.
Luisa: “Why did you help me? You should have just left me in the apartment.”
Jax: “I couldn’t do that. Where is Vera anyway? Does she know you’re sick?”
Luisa: “Yeah, she knows. She went out with the baby and Mike.”
As I sat up, Jax took off the blanket and put the tray in front of me. I saw the porridge and was almost salivating as I took a spoonful of it. I didn’t realize it was still hot and I almost spit it out.
Jax chuckled and took the bowl and took a spoonful and fed it to me. I was hesitant and felt embarrassed about him having to feed me when he said “Go ahead and eat. Don’t be too much of a baby.”
I took the spoon and fed myself as I said “I’m not a baby. I can feed myself.”
I blew on each spoonful and finished the whole bowl within a few minutes. I was really hungry and the porridge tasted great.
Jax: “Take this. Would you like some more?”
I took the medicine from Jax and took it along with the water. I knew that I’m not supposed to feel the effect of the medicine right away but somehow, just taking it made me feel better already.
I handed the glass of water back to Jax, I said “Thank you.”
Jax: “Don’t worry about it. Go get some more rest. I’ll wake you up later.”
I wanted to protest but Jax pushed me down the bed by the shoulder. His bed felt really comfortable and I could feel myself getting sleepy. It’s probably the medicine starting to take effect.
I stopped protesting and closed my eyes. Within a few minutes, I was back to snooze land.
