I couldn’t speak right away and felt myself blushing. When I did, I bowed my head and said “I’m sorry, sir. I didn’t mean to look.”
Man: “Oh, I don’t really mind. Look all you want. I know I’m nice to look at.”
I turned my head away and looked at the walls. The man chuckled as I did. Somehow, the elevator seemed to move slower than it was earlier. I let out a huge breath as I heard the elevator ding, indicating that I arrived at my destination.
The man held the elevator open for me and smirked. I said “Thank you,” softly. I heard him say “See you around,” and I proceeded to walk without looking back. It didn’t take long for me to arrive at my new boss apartment unit. I made sure I had the right unit number before ringing the bell.
I waited a while before Ms. Vera opened the door and she immediately said “What?”
Luisa: “Good evening, Ms. Vera. I am Luisa Mariano. I’m the babysitter your mother sent.”
Ms. Vera: “You were supposed to be here this morning! I missed my appointments because you are late.”
Luisa: “Miss, I didn’t have your address and your mother told me that you will be picking me up from the airport this morning so I waited there.”
Ms. Vera: “So you’re blaming me for your tardiness? How dare you!”
Ms. Vera’s voice is getting really loud and I am starting to worry that the other residents on the floor might get disturbed.
Luisa: “No, I’m not Ms. Vera. I’m sorry for making it sound like that. It was just a misunderstanding. I apologize.”
She didn’t respond and just turned around. She left the door open and I almost jumped when she screamed once more.
Ms. Bera: “What are you waiting for? A room boy? Come in and close the door. You’re letting the cool air out! Idiot.”
As I got inside the apartment, I realized that Vera Madrid is nothing like her mother. Her mother never screamed at us and she was always kind. I guess I will just have to adjust. It’s no big deal. I know that I am a mere servant, and I vow to do a good job so that Ms. Vera will not have any reason to be mad at me.
Ms. Vera: “Your room is right down the hall. Go put your stuff there and start cleaning the house.”
Luisa: “Okay, miss.”
I headed to where she pointed at and found a small room at the end of the hall. There’s a wooden bed full of stuff in it. The room looked smaller because it appears that Ms. Vera turned the room into a storage room. What’s worse, the room is so dirty that I will have to clean it if I wish to sleep in it tonight. I will just have to clean the room up after cleaning the house.
The truth is, I am already so tired, sleepy and hungry, but Ms. Vera is ordering me to clean the house and I intend to do just that. Her mother told me that I was only supposed to be a babysitter, but I don’t really mind doing any extra work if needed.
I opened my luggage and changed into more comfortable clothing. When I got out of the room, I heard Ms. Vera talking to someone probably on her phone. She was laughing heartily and I saw that she was sitting on the couch. I wonder where her kid is and when I would meet her. If she was asleep, Ms. Vera’s loud voice could wake her up.
I was going to ask Ms. Vera where I could find the cleaning materials but she seemed to be so engrossed in her conversation. I gave myself a tour of her apartment and found what I was looking for. Thankfully, the unit is not that big and I felt relieved knowing that it’s not going to take me that long to clean up.
The apartment is in disarray, especially the kitchen. I looked at the fridge and there’s not much stock in there either. I should probably tell Ms. Vera about it. I’ll do it the next day. Aside from the broom and a small rug I found, there’s not much cleaning materials in this house. I used soap and water to wash the rug and keep it clean. I also took note of the groceries and cleaning materials we will be needing so I can clean the house properly.
I started tidying up the kitchen, wiping the counters and sweeping the floor. It didn’t take me that long so I proceeded to wipe the dining room table and sweep the floor there. I was almost done when I heard Ms. Vera coming over. I looked at her as she said “I need you to be awake by 5 am tomorrow. You need to have breakfast ready by 7am. The baby has to be fed and changed by then too.”
Luisa: “Okay, miss. Uhm, I have something for you.”
I handed her the receipt for the cab fare. She raised her brow and said “What’s this?”
Luisa: “That’s the receipt for the cab fare, miss. You can just reimburse me tomorrow.”
Ms. Vera: “Why would I reimburse you your cab fare? You're the one who took it, not me.”
Luisa: “Your mother told me to take a cab and ask you to reimburse it, miss.”
Ms. Vera: “Didn’t my mother pay you your advance salary already? You’re so greedy. You chose to take the cab to make your life easy. I’m not paying that for you.”
Ms. Vera didn’t give me a chance to respond as she turned around and walked away. She’s unbelievable. If her mom hadn’t told me to take a cab and that Ms. Vera would reimburse me for it, I would have just taken a bus. I was so disheartened as I continued cleaning the house.
I found a pack of crackers and decided to eat them. I hope Ms. Vera would not notice me taking them. I drank some water with it before I resumed cleaning.
When I was done with the house, I proceeded to clean my room. I had to take out some of the stuff that was on the bed in order for me to clean it. I wasn’t sure where I could put them but I’m sure Ms. Vera would be mad if she saw them outside the room. I will just have to ask her tomorrow. I hope she won't be mad anymore after she’s had a good night’s sleep.
I put the stuff back in the bedroom including the trash. I put them in bags and plan to throw them away tomorrow. I realized that there was no mattress in the wooden bed. There aren’t even any pillows. I will just have to make do with what I have. There wasn’t much space left but I was so tired already that all I wanted to do was to sleep.
I looked for the bathroom and decided to take a quick shower first. I set the alarm for 5 am before I laid down in bed. It didn’t take long before I was sleeping soundly.
------------------------------------
I woke up even before my alarm went off. I went to the bathroom and did my morning routine. I prepared everything I needed to cook breakfast. There weren’t a lot of options in the kitchen, so I decided to fry some eggs and rice. There wasn't any leftover rice, so I steamed some in the rice cooker. I found a can of corned beef which I will sauté later with some onions and potatoes. I didn’t want to cook them too early since I wanted them to still be warm by 7 am.
While the rice is cooking, I decided to check if Ms. Vera’s baby is already awake. I didn’t know which room she’s in. I turned the knob on the first door and found it locked. The next door was open and I immediately smiled as I saw a very cute baby standing in her crib.
I opened the door wide and went inside the room. I smiled at the baby and said “Hi there, I’m Luisa. What’s your name?”
She smiled at me and let out the cutest giggle I have ever heard. I picked her up and I immediately smelled the stench in the diaper.
Luisa: “Oh my. That stinks, baby. What did you eat last night?”
I put her down and looked for her diaper and some wipes. I laid her down on the changing table. Despite the untidiness of the baby’s room, she has complete stuff.
As I completed changing her diapers, I wiped her body clean too and changed her onesie as well. I put powder on her and once she’s all clean, I picked her up and kissed her. I heard her angelic giggles once more.
I carried her towards the kitchen, where I sat her on her high chair. I prepared her food and fed her. When I was done with her, I put down in her crib and gave her some toys. As I started cooking, I made sure that I could see the baby while I did.
I was done cooking and had cleaned the kitchen up before 7am. I set the table and waited for Ms. Vera to wake up while I played with the baby. I wonder what the baby’s name is.
