Not understanding

Ethan POV:

My room door burst open and Selena ran into my arms. "Woah! Is everything okay?" I asked alarmed and worried, she nodded and looked up at me with her beautiful eyes, "I just needed to hug you." I kissed her forehead and held her away from me, "I have good news!" I exclaimed and her eyes lit up, "we don't have to leave!" Instantly her face contorted into one of confusion, "what do you mean?" She asked as she moved to sit down on the bed, "well, my parents, they agreed to accept you as my Luna and theirs!"

She continued to stare at her shoes as I waited for a response, "aren't you happy?" I asked, kneeling down in front of her, "I'm happy." She didn't look happy though. "We can still leave..." I offered but I think we both knew that I didn't want to. She shook her head, "it's okay." I squeezed her hand as I tried to be reassuring, "my mom is planning your birthday party!" I exclaimed, trying to change the subject and the atmosphere, she gave me a half smile, "I heard... I saw her in the kitchen today and she was super excited..." Her responses and even her voice, it was so flat and uninterested, "what's wrong Selena?" I asked, "look at me!" I commanded as I gently moved her face to look at me, her eyes were filling with tears, "please talk to me," I begged. I hated seeing her like this.

"It's just- I'm happy!" She exclaimed as tears ran down her face, "you don't look happy," I responded softly, she shook her head again. "It's a bit much, don't you think?" I looked at her puzzled. What did she mean? "What do you mean?" I asked, she wiped her leaking nose with the back of her sleeve and then wiped her wet eyes, "I want to know more about my family," her words had caught me off guard and I felt an extreme feeling of guilt wash over me. "I-" I felt my words fall away, what could I even say to that...

"It's okay!" She exclaimed as she turned away from me and wiped at her face again, her eyes had gotten puffy from the crying and her nose was tinged red. "Selena-" "I think I need some space for a bit," she said, my heart had started beating faster at the word space. "Why!?" I asked, alarmed by her sudden need for distance, "I just do." "Selena! Please!" I begged as I clutched at her hands tighter, she pulled away from me and stood up, "I'll see you a bit later..." "Please don't go," I begged as she stood up and I followed suit. She turned and made to leave and I grabbed her arm, pulling her back, "please don't go," it was all I could say and I wasn't sure if it was enough. She shuffled closer to me and kissed my cheek. "I will be back Ethan, I just need to process everything... Yesterday, I was locked away and tortured and today I find out I'm supposed to be Luna of this pack," she flung her arms as she gestured to everything around her. I couldn't understand. Why wasn't she happy? She wasn't going to be a servant anymore!

She pulled away from my grip and left, closing the door behind her. I felt conflicted, I wasn't sure if I needed to follow her or give her space. I sat down briefly on the bed and tried to rationalize but it was hard to think with my wolf losing his mind at the word space. He wasn't giving me any clarity and his constant whines in my mind wasn't letting me think, in the end I decided to give in and go find her. After all, she was my mate.

I pulled open my door and there stood Alice. Her eyes were red and she was seething. "Alice-" Before I could lose my mind with her, she grabbed my collar and slammed her lips into mine. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. I immediately pushed her off and stumbled backwards as I wiped my mouth of her remains, "what the f**k!?" I shouted, "how could you make some low life slut Luna!?" She screamed, "don't you dare speak about my mate like that!" I growled, she didn't back down. "You think I'm scared of you!?" She laughed but the laughter never reached her red tinged eyes, I took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, "Alice," I said calmly, "I think you should go." She punched a hole through the wall and looked back at me, her fist was bleeding but she had not relaxed it, "I was supposed to Luna!" She growled and I growled back, standing straighter and asserting my Alpha authority, "careful Alice, anything more you say against your Luna is treason and the penalty for treason is death." She was taken aback by my response and stumbled backwards into the little table by the door, "you would do that..." she breathed out, her eyes unblinking but filling with tears, "for her?" I didn't understand what she meant. "Alice, leave." I mindlinked some guards because she didn't move, she just stood there, staring at me. "I was with you for years-" "You cheated on me Alice!" My head was pounding and I just wanted to find my mate, "please leave!" I couldn't stand it anymore and just in time, the guards arrived and each one grabbed an arm, "take her away and guard her to make sure she doesn't come near me again and make her father aware!" I commanded the guards, they bowed towards me, "Alice, if you come anywhere near Selena or me again, I will have you exiled and you will become a rogue!" She gasped but continued to stare at me with this haunting look. I flicked my wrist, signalling for the guards to take her away and I turned around to not watch the scene of her being dragged away.
